    Process Relief Operator - Recovery (Ngodwana)

    We’re on the lookout for an experienced Process Relief Operator - Recovery to assist production in reducing overtime by providing leave/training relief.
    As a Process Relief Operator - Recovery, you will be responsible to:

    • Take and hand over shift.
    • Operate process/equipment according to best operating practices.
    • Complete section specific interventions/initiatives as planned and agreed for all the identified positions for the specific section.
    • Relief operators and carry out all tasks prescribed for these positions.
    • Assist the foreman/operating staff at breakdowns and in the supervision of staff when necessary.
    • Ensure accurate reporting by recording all incidents in the shift log book.
    • Report all breakdowns, faulty equipment to Foreman.
    • Attend progress meetings with the section training representative, line supervisor and/or mentor, coach and act on any remedial action and/or additional requirements.

    Maintenance Engineer X2

    We’re on the lookout for an experienced Maintenance Engineer to supply competent and cost-effective maintenance and engineering support, service, advice, solutions and techniques to maximise plant production in a safe, and legally compliant.
    As a Maintenance Engineer, you will be responsible for:

    • Ensure the maintenance team’s compliance to all SHEQ policies, procedures, best practices and work instructions.
    • Support ISO9000 (Quality Management System), ISO14001 (Environmental Management Standards), ISO50001 (Energy Management System) and OHSAS18000 (Health and Safety Management System) for engineering in the section.
    • Actively drive the use of plant reliability monitoring techniques to ensure proactive maintenance and reducing unplanned downtime.
    • Manage equipment uptime through fast response and repairs of plant breakdowns.
    • Monitor frequency and modes of equipment failures, breakdowns, accidents and overtime. Drive root cause analysis. Suggest changes to processes and equipment to prevent recurrence.
    • Manage projects for equipment renewals and capital projects on time and within budget.
    • Participate in daily production multi-disciplinary team (MDT) meetings to agree on work focus areas and to resolve plant problems as part of the team.
    • Recommend what work should be outsourced to third party maintenance contractors and what can be done in-house.
    • Conduct studies on new equipment, perform equipment inspections at vendor sites and interact with other industry players to determine whether the equipment would be suited for use in Sappi.
    • Participate in the maintenance budgeting process on an annual basis. Provide input on the requirements for the section under control.
    • Monitor actual expenses against budget on a monthly basis. Explain over or under spend to the Engineering Manager.
    • Continuously identify cost effective design or plant changes that could improve equipment and operational costs in the long term.
    • Lead a small maintenance team.

    What are we looking for?

    • B Tech or BSc/BEng in Mechanical or Electrical engineering.
    • Government Certificate of Competency (Factories) would be an advantage.
    • 5 years’ maintenance experience in heavy industry.
    • Some supervision experience would be an advantage.

    Management Forester - Sjonajona

    We’re on the lookout for an experienced Management Forester to plan, execute & achieve the operational estate management, harvesting objectives & targets for fibre production within resource & SHEQ parameters to ensure a sustainable and low cost fibre supply to Sappi mills and external customers.


    As a Management Forester, you will be responsible to:

    • Build, maintain and reinforce a “predict and prevent” safety culture in all integrated operations
    • Inspect operations regularly to identify risks & ensure that timeous action (blanking & pest control, coppice management) is undertaken.
    • Plan & conduct regular field inspections to ensure that crops, through the timing of operations (weed control, pest & disease management), achieve maximum yields within cost constraints.
    • Ensure that plantations use the Fire Risk Management System (FRMS) to identify risks. Record & implement fire control procedures in order to ensure the effective protection of people, plantations and other assets from forest fires.
    • Develop a tactical plan & ensure that the annual plan of operations for both commercial and open areas comply with standards and service level agreements
    • Develop a pre-harvest plan per compartment in collaboration with the Contractor and Silviculture.
    • Conduct a risk assessment per compartment in order to mitigate potential risks.
    • Ensure that the Harvesting budget is managed effectively by ensuring sales target tons/per day is achieved.
    • Compile in conjunction with Roads Engineer, annual tactical road maintenance plan.
    • Scheduling of short-haul and loading operations to ensure rail/road transport is released on time.
    • Ensure that company assets such as buildings, villages and company houses are maintained and managed effectively according to set standards (hygiene & legal compliance) and within budget constraints.
    • Ensure that relations with communities, other internal and external stakeholders are effectively maintained and managed in order to ensure company image is upheld, risks mitigated and relationships enhanced.

    What are we looking for?

    • National Diploma in Forestry or related qualification

    Wrapline Operator (Ngodwana)

    We’re on the lookout for an experienced Wrapline Operator to safely and efficiently operate the wrap line to ensure optimum production output and quality at the best cost with minimum downtime, rejections, and waste.

     As a Wrapline Operator, you will be responsible for: 

    • Monitor the continuous running of all conveyors and stations from the wrapline conveyer to the warehouse.
    • Ensure all raw materials are available for wrapping.
    • Ensure the integrity of web information is correct i.e. weight, width, diameter, and status. Reprocess reels from winder with incorrect information.

    Millwright (MPU - Evergreen)

    This role reports in to the Millwright Superintendent.

    The main responsibilities of this job are:

    • Diagnose, fault find and repair all mechanical  and electrical breakdowns and defects millwide
    • Perform mechanical repairs by removing and replacing mechanical equipment such as pumps, valves, fans, gearboxes, pulleys, bearings, couplings and other mechanical equipment
    • Overhaul equipment and change seals and bearings where required
    • Perform alignment on rotating equipment and rigging of equipment up to 1ton

    • Perform fault finding on PLC's and VSD's and effect required repairs where necessary
    • Perform replacement, installation and termination of new or damaged LT cables where required

    • Assist with commissioning mechanical and electrical equipment after shutdowns, breakdowns and new installations
    • Understand and comply with safety, health , environmenbt and Quality standards and procedures

    The ideal candidate should have:

    • NQF level 4 Qualification (Grade 12 / N3 Engineering) coupled with a Millwright Trade Test

    Process Operator Dry End (Mgqanga)

    We’re on the lookout for an experienced Process Operator Dry End to operate the Newsprint Dry End section safely and efficiently to ensure optimum production output and quality at the best cost with minimum downtime.

     As a Process Operator Dry End, you will be responsible for: 

    • Perform pre–start inspection of dryer screens, ropes, and separators according to best operating practices.
    • Examine the sheet for dirt, calendar cuts, creases, ridges, rope marks, blotches, stamp marks, formation, and wet streaks, and communicate the information to the Shift Superintendent and Outside Operator
    • Test the density and hardness of each reel by sounding and feeling the reel, comparing it to the Metso QCS profile, and report relevant non – conformances to the Shift Superintendent and Winder Operator.
    • Control dry end draws & Assist with felt and wire changes.
    • Ensure optimum broke feeding to maintain level according to BOP.
    • Operate Dry end Repulpers and auxiliaries & Fit dryer screens on shuts.
    • Ensure correct dryer screen tensions and guiding – six in total.
    • Ensure correct rope tension, condition, and cleanliness.
    • Operate console and control panels for dryer section, calendar stack, and pope reel.
    • Coordinate changes in basis weight, trim, and speed changes with Process Controller and Winder Operator.
    • Perform shut tasks as assigned by Shift Superintendent or coordinator.
    • Check and correct all PV fans and air makeup units on mezzanine floors.
    • Produce paper in accordance with MPS requirements with regards to jumbo sizes, deckle, and quality requirements.

    • Feed the paper tail on start–up, from the first dryer section to the Pope reel.
    • Ensure that the Hood doors are closed at all times.

    • Control paper caliper for the various grades, according to Best operating practices.
    • Perform shift inspection on all equipment as per the shift check sheets and report deviation to the shift superintendent.

    We’re on the lookout for an experienced an Assisstant Winder to provide assistance to the Winderman for the continuous and efficient operation of the Winder. 

    As the Assisstant Winder, you will be responsible for:

    • Takes and Hand over Shift
    • Assists the Winderman in preparing the section for start-up and stopping.
    • Assists in operating the Semi-Goliath crane to load reels onto the unwind stand.
    • Assists in setting up slitter knives, checks for blunt or damaged slitter knives and checks drive drums and motors.
    • Assists in feeding the paper through the Winder.
    • Checks trim shavings to ensure that they are removed via the trim blower tube.
    • Assists by monitoring the quality and sheet appearances of paper being rewound and report any abnormalities to the Winderman.
    • Assists the Winderman by ejecting the completed set onto the lowerator.
    • Applies barcode for identification purposes and core plugs for despatching.
    • Assists with unplanned/planned maintenance shut tasks on instruction from the Foreman.
    • Prepare the core set up for the shift and insure that they are ready for use on the winder.

    What are we looking for?

    • Matric and N3 Pulp & Paper Certificate (4 subjects).
    • Minimum 3 months experience as a Process Trainee.

    Sappi Stanger Mill is on the lookout for an experienced Buyers to provide support to the Sourcing managers and Procurement Manager with regards to the procurement process and sourcing expertise essential to the engineering department for goods and services which ultimately lead to the implementation of appropriate agreements for Energy, MRO items, Capital goods and services.

    This role reports to the Procurement Manager.

    As a Buyer you will be responsible for: 

    • Sourcing goods and services according to specification in accordance with the procurement policy and/or sourcing strategy
    • Issuing tenders and RFQs and engage with stakeholders to define engineering requirements
    • Evaluating the tender process, arrange bid clarification and adjudicate
    • Ensuring that quality control procedures are implemented and adhered to by the suppliers and supply certificates of conformance where required
    • Raising deviations/claims against vendors for poor performance and drive non-conformance to an acceptable conclusion
    • Negotiating preferential payment terms and Incoterms
    • Undertaking vendor assessments and maintain vendor master data

    We’re on the lookout for an experienced Engineer: Auto & Services to provide a professional systems/Instrumentation Engineering Support Service by managing and designing plant modifications and projects in accordance with Mill Procedures and Specifications.

    As an Engineer : Auto & Services, you will be responsible for :

    • Manages varied multi-disciplinary plant modifications/project work from concept to commissioning and closeout. Make use of some internal but mostly external (contractor) resources; draws up Enquiry / Specification documents as required.
    • Ensures that all modifications/projects conform fully to Mill Change Management Procedures, Mill Standard Specifications, Mill Safety Standards and the OHS Act.
    • Design control system modifications for both process and maintenance improvement applications and advice on equipment selection.
    • Provides technical support to and analyses breakdowns for Maintenance Engineers. Area of expertise to cover Instrumentation and distributed control systems.
    • Identifies and addresses plant maintenance problems through meetings, inspections and feedback mechanisms in order to ensure excellence in engineering services provided.
    • Oversees and ensures the provision, maintenance and integrity of plant drawings, technical documentation, process control software and equipment specifications by the institution and enforcement of effective control procedures.

    ​What are we looking for?

    • B Tech Diploma (Control Systems or equivalent).
    • 5 years industrial process control plus 3 years distributed process control in pulp and paper.
    • At least 3 years supervisor experience.
    • Knowledge and experience with ABB 800xA systems.
    • Install and configure networks switches, with Vlan experience.
    • Design, build and install fibre optic networks

    • Mantain backups in a networked environment
