    Legal Secretary - Capetown

    • As a Legal Secretary, the primary job responsibility is to provide legal support to our attorneys, support our sales operations by e.g., preparing engagement letters from templates, and assisting the Internal Legal Department with day-to-day operations and organization of our busy consulting firm and law firm. The successful candidate will also directly support the day-to-day initiatives and long-term strategies of our firm’s General Counsel. Strong attention to detail and professionalism are our top values and our #1 consideration in evaluating candidates.

    Typical Day/Week Snapshot of the Legal Secretary:

    • Effectively managing the full contract lifecycle including preparing our MSA and SOW templates for use with our clients, shepherding contracts through the approval and signature process, ensuring all needed corresponding documents are executed and filed properly, assisting in negotiations, archiving and record retention, and documenting renewal or termination of contracts
    • Doing initial reviews of various types of contracts in order to spot/highlight issues and areas of concern and enable faster review by our in-house attorneys
    • Providing managerial support for the Internal Legal Department, e.g., maintaining our list of tasks assigned in the department, maintaining/updating the company’s governance calendar
    • Helping develop and improve standard operating procedures related to our internal processes
    • Collaborating with our in-house attorneys to suggest improvements to templates, processes, and organizational structures
    • Perform a variety of other legally oriented tasks and duties as assigned

    What We Need From You:

    • Great interpersonal skills and fluent in English
    • Paralegal certificate preferred
    • 8+ years Legal Secretary experience preferred
    • Familiarity with commercial contracts
    • Be a team player; interested in contributing to a growing enterprise
    • Willingness to work occasional evenings; primarily for full team meetings, happy hours, etc.

    • Detail-oriented individual with a highly organized / structured work ethic and top-notch organizational skills
    • Tech-savvy and comfortable using a variety of software applications
    • Excellent written and verbal communication (i.e., you need to be able to write like a pro, and know your audience)

    • Ability to work independently, collaborate with teammates, and fully deliver on all commitments

    Associate Privacy Counsel - Capetown

    About the Role

    • This is an excellent opportunity for anyone who wants to join a team working on the cutting edge of privacy and data protection, and who wants to further develop a practice in an in-demand, high-tech area of law. We are inundated with business from clients who love the way we advise on privacy compliance (hence the need for you!).
    • We have found our strongest team members don’t necessarily have prior experience in privacy law. You’ll begin with a robust and established onboarding and training process. We typically advance people more quickly than your typical law firm, and we do it on an individual basis (no lockstep promotions or compensation).

    Note:

    • There is a 1-3 hour skills assessment associated with the recruitment for this position. We know this is a burden, but we think it’s worth it, and we appreciate you taking the time to complete it. We’ve found it enables us to find the best attorneys, regardless of their experience, where they went to law school, or where they were trained. We want smart, kind, creative lawyers, plain and simple, and this assessment is a crucial part of our ability to hire this way.

    Responsibilities Include:

    • Assessing client information systems for compliance with data protection laws and regulations
    • Drafting data protection agreements, addenda, and amendments
    • Advising clients on privacy-related product improvements
    • Researching legal issues and composing legal opinions/memoranda
    • Writing privacy law related articles and blog posts
    • Assisting in the development of in-house legal templates
    • Contributing to the development of internal procedures and methodologies
    • Collaborating with a team of intellectual peers who value cooperation and community.

    What We Need From You

    Need to Have:

    • License to practice law (active and in good standing) in your jurisdiction
    • At least three years of post qualifying experience
    • An interest in privacy and technology
    • Team player, interested in contributing to a growing enterprise
    • Strong writing/editing skills and attention to detail
    • Ability to work remotely
    • Willingness to learn new skills and receive direction and feedback from partners
    • Willingness to pursue privacy certifications (e.g., CIPP/E, CIPM)
    • Willingness to work occasional evenings; primarily for full team meetings, happy hours, etc.

    Nice to Have:

    • Previous contract drafting and negotiation experience strongly preferred
    • Experience/training in privacy law
    • Privacy certifications of some kind (e.g., CIPP/E, CIPP/US, specialty from law school, etc.)
    • Professional involvement in the privacy and/or data security space (attendance at privacy conferences; membership or publication in the IAPP, etc.)
