    Senior Manager Asset Management ( South Africa or Africa Business Unit)

    Education & Qualification

    • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent tertiary qualification in Engineering discipline – Mechanical or Electrical.

    General Knowledge & Experience

    • Minimum 10 years’ engineering experience in the mining industry.

    Technical Knowledge & Skills

    Advanced Application of the following Knowledge & Skills is required.

       Safety

    • Can identify and interpret safety risks and resolve emerging issues; and ensuring that appropriate focus and resources are available to achieve safety objectives.
    • Is able to interpret the requirements of the Major Hazard Control Standards and guide the operations to achieve compliance.

       Asset Management Strategy 

    • Able to create a complete and well thought out asset strategy, using equipment and production data.
    • Can establish work management systems that deliver effective planning, resourcing and execution of maintenance work on schedule and within budget.
    • Define continuous improvement processes to systematically identify, prevent and eliminate chronic defects that lead to failures of major and critical equipment.
    • Able to develop processes to assess the condition of equipment, plant, and critical infrastructure in order to identify early signs of failure, take preventative action and mitigate consequences.
    • Understands the critical operational parameters to operate machinery and equipment within design tolerances. 
    • Able to define and establish a risk-based asset integrity process that identifies, prioritises and manages asset integrity threats.

      Engineering Science

    • Deeply understands how to analyse the performance of machinery and equipment and identify opportunities to increase both availability and utilisation.
    • Can do fault diagnosis and liaise with subject matter experts and equipment suppliers in collaborating to increase equipment performance.

    • Reviews and validates Stay-in-Business capital plans and projects to meet business requirements and reduce risk.

    • Is able to set OEE targets and generate innovative solutions to close the performance gaps relating to the primary drivers of value (run time, throughput and reliability)
    • Can integrate operational and economic models into a value engineering model for the mine and plant.
    • Can demonstrate the sustainability of equipment and process performance improvements by integrating these with the business planning process.

        Project Management 

    • Fully understands the AGA project management standard requirements to complete a major project (>$50m) to implementation.
    • Can review a major project for compliance against the standard and make recommendations to address deficiencies.

    Work Accountabilities

        Safety Accountabilities:

    • Modelling behaviour that is consistent with the AGA Safety Vision and Values, assisting in driving a culture where Safety is our first value, and providing support for incident/accident investigations where required.
    • Champion the Major Hazard Control Standards relevant for Mobile and Fixed Assets/Plant.
    • Conduct reviews of HPI’s and significant incidents to ensure elimination of risk and improvement in standards and follow up on implementation of recommendations.
    • Providing input in the integrated planning review sessions to ensure that due consideration has been given to address asset management and asset integrity risks and opportunities.
    • Perform relevant project and operations reviews, to ensure the correct application of and compliance to AGA asset management standards, guidelines, specifications. systems and procedures.
    • Advising the VP Asset Management and VP Technical on asset management or Asset Integrity related system issues and risks

        Technical Accountabilities:

    • Provide and coordinate engineering technical support, leadership, consulting services and guidance which include.
    • Implement appropriate engineering and maintenance strategies in collaboration with the site Snr Engineering/Maintenance Managers and relevant CTO resources to de-risk the operations and ensure safe and reliable infrastructure and plant performance thereby ensuring (wherever possible) standardisation of strategies across operations and alignment with the overall engineering strategy.
    • Developing BU/Regional engineering guidelines, standards, procedures, specifications (aligned with group position and/or standards) and facilitate the adoption and implementation of these at the operations.
    • Providing engineering assurance and governance by auditing onsite compliance to guidelines, standards, procedures, processes and specifications. Where deviations are encountered assist the sites to develop strategies and plans to ensure compliance.
    • Developing performance measures and monitoring key metrics (league tables, Asset Integrity etc) to Identify technical improvement opportunities that can optimize the performance and reliability of mobile and fixed plant and infrastructure in order to proactively identify performance trends and defect elimination opportunities. Leading root cause assessments for acute and chronic failure modes where appropriate. Linked to FAP and/or other operational and financial improvement processes, identifying and monitoring progress against cost and operational performance for all relevant BU operations and ensuring timely, accurate and relevant reporting in the asset management area to the Business Unit, VP Technical and VP Asset management as appropriate. 
    • Acting as the single point of contact to coordinate and provide specialist engineering support services to the operations by engaging either internal CTO specialists or industry service providers.
    • Contributing discipline specific inputs towards the annual strategy and business planning processes, as well as quarterly integrated plans (SIB and Opex) which includes oversight, technical guidance, and quality assurance of sites Fleet Replacement Strategy and LCC costing and Asset Integrity processes.
    • Compiling and issuing discipline specific feedback reports highlighting risks, opportunities and progress to the VP Asset Management, VP Technical, General Managers and BU management as required. This includes reviewing integrated plan deliverables and assumptions and providing recommendations to the VP Technical prior to integrated plan signoff.
    • Ensuring an effective health of discipline system within engineering which includes supporting sites by coaching, mentoring, guiding emerging talent, identifying opportunities for training, facilitating rotations and enabling succession planning and coordinating and participating in Asset Management Forums and facilitating knowledge transfer across the region and group.
    • Supporting the Regional projects team by participating in project studies and performing project design reviews, which include reviewing engineering designs, specifications, costs, operability and maintainability.
    • Managing all technical and commercial aspects with regards to power supply at the operations, which include engaging key suppliers and stakeholders as well as coordination activities with the sites. This includes managing (together with site leads) key strategic suppliers and contracts e.g. power supply, OEM services etc.
    • Performing the functions of the Regional Process Owner (RPO) for the ONEERP system which is the regional champion for all activities impacting processes and data. Assisting the Business Process Custodian (BPC) to design common processes with the support of the Regional SAP support analyst (SSA).

       People Accountabilities:        

    • In conjunction with the GM’s and site Snr Engineering/Maintenance Managers, establish performance standards for roles and ensure competency assessments are done for the key engineering functions as defined in the Health of Discipline Framework.
    • Establish key performance standards and critical tasks for the purpose of progress and performance assessments for site Snr Engineering/Maintenance Managers including defining critical tasks and key performance indicators for SII Engineering resources and participating in performance reviews where required.
    • Facilitate and coordinate discipline-specific talent pool processes, succession planning and Individual Development Plans in consultation with GMs, Snr Engineering/Maintenance Managers and VPs.
    • Provide advice and qualification requirements on proposed recruitment and resourcing for Str II roles and above in the engineering discipline at sites in line with the Discipline Health Framework requirements.
    • Support the VP Asset Management on maintaining the Discipline Health Framework 

    Financial Accountabilities:     

    • Compile annual BU role budgets for work related office and travel expenses.
    • Ensure sites have Stay-in-Business capital and Energy planning processes by performing reviews to ensure budgets are technically sound and properly motivated and prioritized. (This will include governance and oversight of Energy Management plans which may require facilitating 3rd party audits of energy and power budgets).

    Principal Tailings

    KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES

    • Maintenance of AGA Tailings Management Dashboard for Africa Operations.
    • Overseeing that required tailings deposition infrastructure, methods and operations as well as embankment design work is completed on time and in line with LOM operational requirements
    • Approving and participating in design related decisions and outcomes for tailings dam projects to ensure technical due diligence. Technical lead role for all tailings dam projects by tailings consultants
    • Understanding overall requirements for timing of construction activities in order to meet operational requirements
    • Conduct quarterly monitoring inspections on all TSF’s or as determined– in support of due diligence and maintaining standards with regards to ongoing deposition.
    • Participate as required in the annual Independent Technical Review Board TSF audits and support corrective actions.
    • GISTM standard -achieving and maintaining compliance
    • Assign work, monitor performance, train and develop team members while creating a culture of high-performance teams.
    • Regular monitoring of the performance of any geotechnical structures, observing and reporting on effectiveness of maintenance of all TSF facilities
    • Verifying that required remedial actions for operational freeboard (including factors of safety), storm water channels and access routes are properly addressed and followed up with Operations management.
    • Managing Specialist Tailings Engineer.
    • Managing service delivery of the Engineers of Record and ensuring tailings management system is compliant

    QUALIFICATION, EXPERIENCE AND TECHNICAL COMPETENCIES

    Qualification

    •  Bachelor’s degree in Civil engineering

    Experience

    • A Registered Professional Engineer.
    • Minimum of ten years geotechnical and tailings experience and tailings dam design knowledge.
    • Track record of finding practical and innovative solutions to tailings disposal
    • Track record of successfully managing and delivering projects on time and within budget
    • Excellent communication skills
    • Proficiency in Microsoft Office software suite
    • Proficiency in English is essential
    • Project management skills
