    Lecturer - Faculty of Health Sciences - School of Health Care Sciences - Department of Nursing Science

    RESPONSIBILITIES:         

    The incumbent will be responsible for:

    • Teaching undergraduate and postgraduate students;
    • Supervising undergraduate and postgraduate students;
    • Participating in skills training and assessment;
    • Updating course content and revising study guides;
    • Maintaining the electronic learning environment;
    • Performing other academic and research duties as may be delegated by the Head of Department;
    • Conducting research at a national and international competitive level;
    • Participating in the Department, School of Health Care Sciences and Faculty strategic initiatives relating to teaching, learning and community engagement.

    MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

    • A Master’s degree in Nursing Science;
    • Qualification in Post-Basic Psychiatric Nursing and Nursing Education;
    • Current registration with South African Nursing Council (SANC);
    • At least 1 DHET accredited publication;

    REQUIRED COMPETENCIES (SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE AND BEHAVIOURAL ATTRIBUTES):

    • Good verbal and written communication skills;
    • Good interpersonal and mentoring skills;
    • Good computer skills;
    • Scientific writing skills.

    ADDED ADVANTAGES AND PREFERENCES:

    • Experience in a clinical environment;

    Lecturer/Snr Lecturer/Associate Professor - Department of Anatomy - School of Medicine - Faculty of Health Sciences

    RESPONSIBILITIES:

    • Teaching Human Anatomy (including in the dissection hall) at a tertiary level;
    • Being intimately involved in research in a related field;
    • Acting as a supervisor for postgraduate students, including the publication thereof;

    MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

    Lecturer Clinical:

    • Masters in Medicine/Dentistry
    • Research experience in Human Anatomical Sciences with 1 accredited publications;
    • Registration with HPCSA (if qualified as a Dentist or Medical Practitioner);

    Lecturer Basic Sciences

    • A scientific related Masters degree 
    • Research experience in Human Anatomical Sciences with 2 accredited publications (preferably in last 3 years and ISI journals);

    Senior Lecturer Clinical:

    • Masters in Medicine/Dentistry
    • 3 years teaching experience (Preferbaly in Human Anatomy);
    • 3 accredited scientific publications (preferably in ISI journal);
    • Postgraduate student supervision (2 Masters);
    • Conference papers delivered;
    • Community engagement;
    • Curriculum development/innovation;
    • Registration with HPCSA.

    Senior Lecturer Basic Sciences: 

    • A relevant Doctorate degree in Health Sciences
    • 5 accredited scientific publications (preferably in ISI journal);
    • 3 years teaching experience (Preferbaly in Human Anatomy);
    • Postgraduate student supervision (2 Masters or higher);
    • Conference papers delivered;
    • Community engagement;
    • Curriculum development/innovation.

    Associate Professor (Clinical):

    • A Doctorate degree in Medicine/Dentistry
    • Evidence of pstgraduate supevision of Masters and PhD supervised;
    • 5 years teaching experience in anatomy/embryology/osteology; 
    • 12 accredited publications (recent and 50% in the ISI jourrnals);
    • Course /block coordinator or equivalent;
    • Significant curriculam development/innovation;
    • Community engagement;
    • Registration with HPCSA.

    Associate Professor (Basic Sciences):

    • A Doctorate degree in Health Sciences;
    • Evidence of pstgraduate supevision of Masters and PhD supervised (4 Masters completed and evidence of current PhDsupervision);
    • 5 Years teaching experience in anatomy/embryology/osteology; 
    • 5 Accredited publications (recent and 50% in the ISI jourrnals);
    • Conference papers presented internaionally;
    • NRFrating or evidence of being an established researcher;
    • Course /block coordinator or equivalent;
    • Some curricilam developmentinnovation.
    • Community engagement.

    REQUIRED COMPETENCIES (SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE AND BEHAVIOURAL ATTRIBUTES):

    • Illustrate potential to become an established lecturer/researcher;
    • Proficient computer skills in Microsoft Office;
    • Strong leadership and communication skills;
    • The ability to work independently and in a team;
    • Interpersonal- and mentoring skills.

    ADDED ADVANTAGES AND PREFERENCES:

    • A strong and proven record of research and postgraduate student supervision in Human Anatomy, Embryology and Histology, including peer-reviewed publications;
    • Experience in teaching undergraduate students in the allied health professions (e.g. Nursing, Physiotherapy, Occupational Therapy, Dietetics, Radiography, Oral Hygiene and BCMP);
    • Experience in management and maintenance of laboratories histology and dissection hall as well as relevant equipment;
    • Experience in the creation and maintenance of anatomical prosections used for teaching;
    • Member of ASSA (Anatomical Society of Southern Africa) or an equivalent professional society.

    Professor and Dean - Faculty of Health Sciences

    RESPONSIBILITIES

    The Professor and Dean will be responsible to:

    • Align the Faculty's ethos, vision, and mission with the University's;
    • Ensure the Faculty meets its strategic goals and performance targets;
    • Provide strong academic leadership and enhance the Faculty's academic stature;
    • Market the Faculty, engage in fundraising, and promote regional, national, and international liaisons with alumni, other academic institutions, research organisations, professional bodies, government, civil society, and the broader community; and
    • Foster an environment conducive to research, teaching and learning excellence, and community engagement;

    MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

    • An appropriate doctorate in Health Sciences;
    • Requisite qualifications and experience for appointment as a full professor at the University of Pretoria, the assessment of which is based on several factors, including teaching, research and postgraduate supervision, community engagement, academic administration and academic citizenship;
    • At least five (5) years of senior management experience in higher education;
    • Proven managerial expertise, skills, and competencies to manage all areas of the Faculty, including knowledge of and experience in finance, human resources, marketing, and engagement;
    • A strong understanding of the importance of research in health sciences;
    • Proven experience in generating external funding; and
    • Registration with a professional body.

    Intern: Counselling Psychologist - Department of Student Affairs

    RESPONSIBILITIES:

    The successful candidate will actively participate in the following areas:

    Psychotherapeutic counselling services to students/young adults, to promote academic success and emotional wellness:

    • Rendering counselling services (individually and group work), and present programmes to enhance student emotional wellness;
    • Providing therapeutic services to children, adolescents and other client profiles at other campuses and sites, as part of training requirements;
    • Consultation with Head: Student Counselling and colleagues;

    Development of preventative and self-help, academic and therapeutic programmes in view of the identified needs of students:

    • Developing new programmes according to the identified needs;
    • Co-operating and receiving feedback from internal role players by ways of applicable data and research;

    Career testing and academic support services and programmes:

    • Developing and delivering academic support services and programmes;
    • Providing feedback to students and parents after testing/counselling;
    • Consulting with academic personnel, relevant internal and external role players, and students, to determine needs, problems and possibilities for programmes and other relevant interventions;

    Research:

    • Contributing to research to support the department in developing tailor-made programmes in line with the academic and emotional needs of the student population at the University of Pretoria;

    Professional development;

    • Enhancing personal level of knowledge by way of studying applicable literature and research to ensure continuous learning and training;
    • Participating in case presentation for the purpose of evaluation by supervisors and/or other professionals;
    • Undergoing mandatory weekly supervision;

    Participation in institutional activities:

    • Participating as a team member within the Student Counselling Unit in all its activities and its networks within the University.

    MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

    • Proven registration as a MA student in Counselling Psychology at an accredited university/college;
    • Registration as student/intern with HPCSA (Counselling psychology);
    • Compliance in the above with the HPCSA regulations;
    • Completed course work as part of first year MA/MSc Counselling Psychology training;
    • Successful practical work as part of first year MA/MSc Counselling Psychology training.

    REQUIRED COMPETENCIES (SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE AND BEHAVIOURAL ATTRIBUTES):

    Knowledge of the following:

    • Psychological interventions at a professional level;
    • Short term and brief therapy techniques;
    • A range of psychometric assessments;
    • The Code of Ethics and Conduct for Psychologists (HPCSA);
    • Ability to diagnose psychological problems and psychopathology within the Scope of Practice for Counselling psychologists; 
    • Flexibility as the service demands require;
    • Good interpersonal skills;
    • Ability to work in a multi-disciplinary team;
    • Efficient planning, organising and prioritising skills;
    • Ability to work under pressure and manage crisis interventions;
    • Professionalism, confidentiality and sensitivity towards the diversity of students;
    • Excellent communication skills (written and verbal);
    • Computer skills in MS Word, PowerPoint and e-mail;
    • Ethical insight and reliability.
