    Fieldwork Supervisor

    Key requirements: Fieldworkers

    • Minimum of a relevant undergraduate qualification.
    • Preferably a minimum of an Honours degree.
    • At least three years’ experience in qualitative and quantitative fieldwork (undertaking surveys, focus groups and key informant interviews).
    • Fluency in English, as well as one other national language.
    • Flexibility and willingness to take on additional tasks as per project requirements.
    • Experience with digital data collection methods.
    • High personal motivation and self-management.
    • Articulate and tactful communication skills.
    • Prior fieldwork experience with HSRC is an added advantage.
    • Only applications with a South African identity document/card can apply.
    • Excellent interpersonal, organisational, administrative and problem-solving skills.
    • Able to work under pressure.
    • Intellectual and personal integrity, a well-developed work ethic, and drive.
    • In addition, at least 2 years of prior fieldwork supervision experience in managing fieldwork teams is an advantage.

    ​​​​​​​Duties & Responsibilities    

    Key responsibilities

    • Overall responsibility for supervising fieldwork team.
    • Participate in and support training of fieldworkers.
    • Assign work to fieldwork team members.
    • Ensure full understanding of the HSRC and project processes.
    • Ensure that data collectors secure informed consent from participants where applicable.
    • Report on fieldwork progress directly to the Fieldwork Manager.
    • Ensure quality work by following processes, procedures and steps outlined in the training material and as instructed.
    • Management of fieldwork assets as provided by the HSRC.
    • Ability to work in a multicultural and interdisciplinary team.
    • High personal motivation, self-management, and attention to detail.
    • Complete any other relevant tasks essential to the successful completion of the data collection as part of the project.
    • Communicate on a continuous basis as necessary with the Fieldwork Manager on aspects of the project in need of clarification.
    • Perform/execute any other tasks/responsibilities which are essential for the successful completion of the fieldwork.

    Research Assistants

    Minimum Requirements    

    • The candidate are expected to have a Bachelor’s degree and extensive qualitative and quantitative data collection and analysis experience. Experience working for the HSRC and on previous projects, will be advantageous in to addition:
    • Bachelors’ Degree or equivalent degree in social sciences, humanities or a related field. A Master’s Degree is advantageous.
    • Strong analytical and critical thinking skills, w ith the ability to make sense of complex and diverse information and to identify patterns, trends, and insights
    • Demonstrated experience in qualitative research methods
    • Strong w riting skills, with the ability to produce high-quality reports, articles, and other outputs that are clear, concise, and engaging
    • A passion for and commitment to advancing Women’s Empow erment and Gender Equality , and a w illingness to work on complex and challenging issues in a rigorous and thoughtful manner
    • Strong values and research ethics.
    • High personal motivation, self-management, and detail-orientation;
    • Temperament to cope with a pressurised, deadline driven work environment.

    Duties & Responsibilities    

    • The scope of work and expectations of the Research Assistants will include the following, but is not limited to:
    • Conduct Key Informant Interviews
    • Coordinate Focus Group Discussions and Regional Workshops
    • Update stakeholder databases- provincial, national, and state-owned enterprises.
    • Complete provincial fieldwork and workshop reports.
    • Complete transcriptions, data cleaning and consolidation
    • Complete data analysis
    • Contribute to the drafting of project reports
    • Contribute to the policy draft & Implementation framew ork
