    Medical Doctor: Antarctica

    Requirements:

    •  In possession of an appropriate medical qualification (Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery or relevant qualification) recognised to practice as a General Practitioner in South Africa.
    •  At least 5 years of experience and registered with the medical board HPCSA or similar authoritative body.
    •  Must have practical experience in, and/or be able to respond to, the following fields.
    •  General Medicine, Dermatology, Ophthalmology, ENT, Psychiatry and Mental Health Counselling.
    •  Secondary areas include: Emergency Management, Anaesthetics and Intensive Care, Basic Surgery, Orthopaedics, Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Occupational and Industrial Medicine, Dentistry, Radiography, Physiotherapy and Sports Medicine.
    •  Training may be provided in some of these areas before departure.
    •  Applicants must provide proof of registration as a medical practitioner and details of any suspensions or other actions from relevant medical registering bodies.

    Duties:

    •  The Medical Doctor will be the sole medical practitioner to provide complete generalist medical, surgical and emergency dental care, to about 12 expedition members for up to 15 months, at SANAE Base in Antarctica.
    •  This station accommodates about 12 people in winter and about 40 during summer (December to March).
    •  He/She will also be required to render occupational medicine, nutrition, preparation of first-aids kits, inventory control of pharmaceuticals and equipment.
    •  Medical support includes remote support from South African Military Health Service.
    •  Additionally he/she will provide instruction and advice to fellow expeditioners on matters of health, medical procedures and first-aid.
    •  Preparation of monthly and annual reports, do stock-takes to order supplies and equipment and do other common “non-medical” duties performed by expedition members.
    •  Should the incumbent present a befitting profile, he/she could be nominated as
    • the team leader of the expedition.
    •  The successful incumbent will be required to perform the role of the onboard ship doctor en-route to Antarctica including pre-departure preparations.
    •  During this period the Doctor will need to undergo the requisite training provided and comply with all policies and regulations governing the ship’s crew.

    Communications Engineer: Antarctica

    Requirements:

    • A National Diploma or Degree in Electronic or Electrical (light current) or IT Engineering, or relevant comparable qualification, with 3-5 years post qualification experience. 
    • Competency in electronic maintenance, diagnostics and repairs with proven faultfinding capabilities.
    • Preferably have experience in VSAT satellite systems and microwave systems, IT network management and support (managing a computer network with LINUX servers and routers), HF and VHF 2-way radio equipment and operation, telephone systems (PABX's and VOIP), PC's, fire detection systems, GPS's, general electronic equipment repair.
    • The incumbent has to be competent in the use of an oscilloscope, spectrum analyser and other relevant measuring equipment; and be familiar with good workshop practices, correct use of basic workshop tools and an understanding of current work, health and safety policies.
    • The incumbent has to be able to work independently with minimal support under
    • extreme pressure and without supervision.
    • The incumbent must be computer literate, have good verbal and written communication skills and the ability to work in a team.

    Duties:

    • The incumbent will be responsible for the operation, maintenance, fault-finding on and repairs of all the communication services and equipment of our Antarctic Base including the satellite, radio, IT, GPS, alarm and telephone systems.
    • Operate cargo handling equipment.
    • The incumbent will report to the base engineer and will be part of the technical team, led by the base engineer that has to perform any additional base related technical functions.
    • Prepare monthly and annual reports, do stock-takes to order spares and equipment and do other common “non-technical” duties performed by expedition members.

    Mechanical Engineer: Antarctica

    Requirements:

    • A National Diploma or Degree in Mechanical Engineering or relevant comparable qualification, with 3-5 years post years post qualification experience. 
    • Competent in mechanical plant maintenance, diagnostics and repairs with proven fault-finding capabilities.
    • Preferably have hands-on experience in facility management.
    • The incumbent has to be familiar with good workshop practices, correct use of basic workshop tools and an understanding of current work, health and safety policies.
    • It would be an advantage if there is experience on earthmoving and material handling equipment, with maintenance management plans as well as all the services that would be found in facilities like hotels or hospitals.
    • The incumbent must be computer literate, have good verbal and written communication skills and the ability to work in a team.

    Duties:

    • The incumbent will be responsible for the maintenance, faultfinding on and repairs of the mechanical and civil services and equipment of our Antarctic Base including the power generators, vehicles, air-conditioning system, refrigeration, water reticulation and waste water systems.
    • Operate Caterpillar machines and cargo handling equipment.
    • The incumbent will have two diesel mechanics reporting to him and as a team have to perform any additional base related mechanical and civil functions.
    • And also, be part of a technical team, led by a technical team manager that has to perform any additional base related technical functions.
    • Prepare of monthly and annual reports, do stock-takes to order spares and equipment and do other common “non-technical” duties performed by expedition members.
    • The incumbent could be tasked to lead and manage the whole technical group at the base.

    Instrumentation Technician: Antarctica

    Requirements:

    • Must be in possession of a trade certification or a National Diploma or Degree in Instrumentation/Mechatronics/Electrical Engineering (Light Current) or relevant comparable qualification, with a minimum of three (3) years relevant post trade/qualification experience.
    • Advanced experience in PLC and SCADA Programming (fault finding and programming).
    • Experience in industrial instrumentation and electrical and electronic systems in terms of design and fault finding.
    • Experience with variable speed drives (VSD) and servo drives; electrical fault finding and panel design (from 24VDC up to 400VAC); HMI programming and fault finding.
    • Knowledge and understanding of electrical schematics.
    • The incumbent has to be familiar with good workshop practices, including an understanding of current work health and safety policies.
    • The incumbent must be computer literate, have good verbal and written communication skills and the ability to work in a team.

    Duties:

    • The incumbent will be responsible for providing maintenance, fault-finding and repairs of the instrumentation and equipment at SANAE IV facility in Antarctica.
    • Must ensure the efficient serviceability and operation of the instrumentation and equipment.
    • Inspect, tests and repairs to instruments and systems used to indicate, record, and control processes and equipment.
    • Test the accuracy of flowmeters, pressure gauges, temperature indicators, controllers and other recording, indicating or controlling instruments.
    • Ensure the serviceability and operation of all additional base related technical systems and equipment.
    • Assist the team in repairing and fixing breakdowns on infrastructure, equipment and vehicles.
    • Conduct tasks related to general maintenance and operations.
    • Perform daily routine checks and standard maintenance on the systems and equipment.
    • Prepare monthly reports on all work performed, conditions of instrumentation and equipment, and spares utilised or required.
    • Prepare schematic drawings, sketches, and reports to reflect changes or alterations made in instruments, circuits, and systems.
    • Record calibrations made, parts and components used, and inventory of parts on hand.
    • Conformance with environmental and safety requirements.
    • Conduct safety inspections.

    Electro-Mechanical Technician: Antarctica

    Requirements:

    • Must be in possession of a Trade Certification (Millwright) or a National Diploma or Degree in Electro/Mechanical Engineering or relevant comparable qualification, with a minimum of three (3) years’ relevant post years post trade / qualification experience.
    • A Wireman’s licence will be advantageous.
    • Competent in electrical and mechanical plant maintenance, diagnostics and repairs with proven fault-finding capabilities.
    • Experience with pumps, compressors, heat exchangers, pipe fitting, plumbing, hydraulics, refrigeration, air conditioning.
    • Experience in diesel engine maintenance; and plant, factory or building maintenance management.
    • Good understanding of basic PLC programming and fault finding;
    • variable speed drives (VSD) and Servo drives;
    • electrical fault finding and panel design (From 24VDC up to 400VAC);
    • HMI Programming and fault finding; and Electrical schematics.
    • The incumbent has to be familiar with good workshop practices, including an understanding of current work health and safety policies.

    Duties:

    • The incumbent will be responsible for providing maintenance, and repairs of the electrical, mechanical and civil services and equipment at the SANAE facility.
    • Must ensure the efficient maintenance, service ability and operation of the electrical, mechanical and civil equipment.
    • Perform daily routine checks on the equipment to ensure all is operational.
    • Troubleshoot and maintain equipment to ensure that all equipment runs efficiently.
    • Execute planned and unplanned maintenance activities as per schedules.
    • Physically monitor and control of the facility processes.
    • Ensure the service ability of all additional base related technical systems and equipment.
    • Prepare monthly reports on all work performed, conditions of electrical and mechanical equipment, and spares utilised or required.
    • Analyse previous electro-mechanical technician (Millwright) reports and prepare program of action.
    • Conformance with environmental and safety requirements.
    • Conduct safety inspections.
    • Examine equipment and complete safety checklist.
    • Comply to OSH ACT requirements
