    Lecturer/ Senior Lecturer (P000514)

    Job description
    PURPOSE OF THE POSITION

    • The purpose of the position is to fill a vacant position in the Creative Arts for Education subject group to ensure quality teaching and learning, to strengthen the subject group’s research profile, to mentor junior academic staff and to contribute to community engagement within the subject group and school.

    KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

    Teaching and learning

    • Lecture undergraduate and postgraduate modules in Music Education across school phases.
    • Manage teaching and learning processes for distance and contact modes of delivery.
    • Contribute to programme and curriculum development of existing and new under- and postgraduate-level modules, degrees, diplomas and certificates, as well as short learning programmes in Music and Creative Arts education.
    • Demonstrate knowledge and competence in integrating ICT platforms in teaching and learning to promote innovate and meaningful teaching, learning and assessment.

    Research

    Senior lecturer

    •  Involvement with research activities within the Music Education and/or Creative Arts discipline.
    •  Ability to successfully supervise postgraduate students in Music Education.
    •  Participation and presentation at national and international conferences.
    •   Publication of accredited outputs in Music Education.

    Lecturer

    • Contribute to scholarly research by pursuing postgraduate studies, publishing and presenting at conferences on key topics related to Music Education.

    Community engagement

    • Participate in and initiate community engagement projects related to Music and Creative Arts Education

    Administration

    • Perform general administration tasks at programme and module level, including serving on committees.

    Minimum requirements

    LECTURER

    • A master’s degree (NQF level 9) in Music or Musicology or Music Education  
    • A minimum of (3) three years’ experience in secondary and/or tertiary teaching of Music Education.

    SENIOR LECTURER

    •  A PhD (NQF level 10) in Music or Musicology or Music Education
    •  A minimum of (5) five years’ experience in secondary and/or tertiary teaching of Music Education.
    •  At least 2 publications in accredited journals/book chapters in related field.
    •  Experience and a track record of postgraduate student supervision by supervising at least 1 master’s student in Music Education to completion, and current involvement in supervision.

    ADDED ADVANTAGES:

    • Accreditation with education and music-related professional bodies.
    • Registration with the South African Society for Music Teachers Association.
    • Membership with national or international music or Music Education societies or professional bodies

    FUNCTIONAL / TECHNICAL COMPETENCIES (KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS):

    LECTURER

    • Registering for and/or completing PhD in Music or Musicology within a reasonable period.
    • Knowledge of key theories and approaches in Music Education.
    • Demonstrate initiative and academic leadership that contributes to the realisation of the strategic plan of the Faculty of Education.
    • Strong teaching and learning portfolio with evidence of effective participation in teaching and competence in the use of various teaching, learning and assessment methodologies in Music Education.
    • Experience of successful management and utilisation of LMS/online platforms and relevant technological advancements to promote meaningful teaching learning and assessment.
    • Ability to design effective, innovative and authentic assessments and assessment criteria in Music Education.
    • Satisfactory student success rate.
    • Conference and workshop attendance and presentation in the relevant discipline.
    •  Experience in teaching and learning study material development.
