    Head, Marketing, Business Banking, PBBSA

    Job Details

    • Marketing: defining, marketing and protecting the Standard Bank brand across our business – including specialist advice and activity for specific countries and business units.

    Job Purpose

    • To develop and customise the Business Banking (BB) strategy within Personal and Business Banking South Africa (PBB SA) by developing strong Business to Business (B2B) and Business to Client (B2C) insights to ensure the appropriate messaging and capitalisation of market opportunities. To direct and manage the BB portfolio of PBB SA by leading and developing the marketing and BB team ensuring a strong and diverse multi-channel advertising and brand strategy is rolled out across jurisdictions.

    Key Responsibilities/Accountabilities

    Strategy: 

    • Direct the strategy and planning of the marketing team by ensuring that the appropriate structures, systems, competencies and values are developed in order to meet and exceed the goals of the marketing plan.
    • Develop the marketing and communication strategy for the Business Banking division of PBB SA and ensure alignment across Personal Banking, Coverage and Business Banking by engaging and collaborating with the respective Heads of the different portfolios.
    • Develop a strong business understanding of the relevant Business Banking portfolio and business lines within by engaging with the business line Heads and develop an appropriate marketing strategy to ensure that the business lines are appropriately equipped to obtain their market share goals and overall strategy.
    • Monitor the progress plan of the relevant business lines strategy to ensure that any potential obstacles are compensated for or removed in order to achieve the marketing strategy of the area.
    • Engage with strategic partners within the Business Banking space by providing input into the development of new markets as well as new propositions within and outside of the Bank to ensure that all customer segments are adequately catered for.
    • Provide the business units with insight around the competitive positioning and develop action plans to differentiate offerings through marketing communication in (customer) segments to draw a larger market share for PBB SA and SBG.
    • Recommend marketing communication standards and policy changes to the relevant Head in PBB SA Marketing by evaluating the changing markets and suggesting ways in which Business Banking and PBB as a whole can remain competitive in the market based on the customer insights.
    • Develop marketing strategies for each of the provinces by engaging with the Head of PBB SA as well as the respective Heads of Personal Banking and Coverage to ensure that there is appropriate horizontal alignment and engagement across the PBB Marketing space.

    People: 

    • Coach and mentor others by taking personal responsibility for displaying the culture as well as living the values of the Bank ensuring that team members are able to express their views, and contribute toward solving any issues they might be facing.
    • Delegate authority and responsibility within the team to ensure that the most appropriate capability is utilised to for fill and obtain the end objective whilst enhancing the team capability.
    • Engage with Human Capital to ensure that all the future focused skills that will be required going forward are obtained ahead of time to ensure that the Bank and PBBSA are adequately equipped for the future.
    • Develop and drive the career pathing of direct and indirect reports by delivering competency based training takes place ensuring that individuals remain motivated, engaged and are continuously being upskilled for the future
    • Coach, mentor and upskill individuals by engaging with them to determine their aspirations and drive the obtainment of these goals as far as possible within the Bank.
    • Remain abreast of the changing environment by continuously engaging in educational opportunities, engaging with academic content and maintaining a strong industry network to ensure that BB, PBB SA and SBG are always in the "Know".
    • Manage and review staff performance by setting standards, goals and targets to achieved to ensuring that individuals are motivated to achieve as well as know what they are being measured against.
    • Foster the transformation of the Business Banking workplace in the business unit marketing team and supports business in the achievement of the undertakings in the transformation scorecard to ensure effective delivery against the BB strategy.
    • Direct and oversee all functions comprising marketing communications associated with the business unit including advertising, public relations, sales collateral, press releases, special events, market research, creative production, media planning, internal and external communication, sponsorships and all other marketing related activities.
    • Oversee the consistent articulation of Standard Bank's desired brand image and position in the (customer) segments within BB by ensuring that all business line and customer segment strategies within BB are aligned and designed to achieve the overall Brand image of SBG.
    • Direct and drive marketing programmes that support cross-selling of products and services in the (customer) segment across PBB SA (including Personal Banking and Client Coverage) to facilitate the smooth adoption and integration of the marketing strategies and products into the market.
    • Provide strategic direction to all third party agencies working on the business units' marketing e.g. Advertising, promotions, media agencies etc to effectively align outputs with the overall strategy and requirements of the area.
    • Direct the development and maintenance of media relations and functioning as chief interface for advertising, special events, media agencies working on the business units marketing to ensure parity and consistency across PBB.
    • Interact with key clients to ensure sustained and profitable relationships.

    Technology & Architecture:

    • Utilise the M&C technology that is available by remaining up to date with the technology as well as the products available at SBG to ensure that they are being marketed appropriately.

    Financial management: 

    • Develop and manage the Business Banking M&C budgets for the different provinces and centre teams whilst ensuring that the return on investment is realised.
    • Monitor the financial and non-financial return on investment from the campaigns and other marketing initiatives by analysing the relevant data metrics to ensure that the marketing strategies are as financially viable as possible.
    • Provide the support to the Business Banking Head's goals which include driving client growth, delivering client solutions to the market and client experience.
    • Oversee financial objectives for marketing in provinces are met by forecasting requirements, preparing a consolidated annual budget for marketing in personal banking, analysing overall variances, and directing corrective actions within the team and ensuring that there is alignment across Personal Banking, Client Coverage and Business Banking.

    Risk, Regulatory, Prudential & Compliance: 

    • Develop a proportional risk appetite by engaging with the Heads of Personal Banking and Coverage to ensure that all areas within the PBB SA space have been appropriately designed their risk appetite and vice versa (ensuring broad horizontal exposure).
    • Define the Business Banking risk appetite by aligning the risk appetite of Business Banking with PBB SA and PBB as larger entities to ensure that the risk for Business Banking is proportionate to the larger business.
    • Conduct audits by reviewing Personal Banking's performance in terms of operational losses by setting targets and ensuring that instances of non-compliance in the audit findings do not re-occur.
    • Oversee the establishment of marketing reports and the different Business Banking communication segments.
    • Where relevant, represents PBB SA Business Banking at external bodies and engages media, investors, regulator, etc. for the provision of external market analysis. 

    Provide and receive a service: 

    • Drives execution of PB objectives through the Client Management (Client Coverage, Digital Banking and Voice Branch) and Client Solutions teams. Integrates BB across PBB SA and Corporate Functions in order to achieve its objectives.  

    Preferred Qualification and Experience

    • Post Graduate Degree
    • Other Preferred Qualifications, certifications or professional memberships

    12 years experience: 

    1-2 years - External Communications: 

    • Full value chain experience of customer proposition benefit and communications planning for direct marketing and customer value chain and service model planning in communication and marketing. 

    8-10 years - Marketing and Communications Business Partnering: 

    • Experience in the design and development of client marketing growth strategies. Experience in managing large business units marketing and communications plans, above the line and below the line, including activation's and events management. Experience in working with B2B strategies and seizing opportunities in the market by anticipating potential shifts and appropriately adapting the strategy of the area to align to market requirements.
