    Senior Project Officer: Scientific Authority

    • This position requires the candidate to be in possession of a degree in Conservation Biology, Ecology, Biology, Botany or Zoology, or relevant field or equivalent qualification with NQF 7. A postgraduate qualification at NQF 8 will be an added advantage. This position also requires 4 years’ experience in a relevant field (can include time spent on relevant research-based postgraduate degrees).
    • The successful candidate will have the following competencies: Willing to travel – field trips (sometimes after hours) and participation in meetings nationally and possibly also overseas; Excellent skills in strategic planning, organisation, data management, project management and presentation; Good understanding of national and global biodiversity conservation; Excellent numeracy and literacy skills; High attention to detail; A valid (unendorsed) Code B drivers’ license with at least one year’s practical driving experience.

    Key Performance Responsibilities include:

    • Manage information and document flow for procurement, asset management, and project management;
    • Act as Scientific Authority secretariat, organising meetings and communicating with Scientific Authority members;
    • Provide logistical support for the Scientific Authority technical support unit; and
    • Conduct or assist with research on sustainable use or wildlife trade.

    Deputy Director: Performance & Monitoring

    • This position requires a degree in Business Administration, Public Policy, Public Administration, Business Management or equivalent qualification at NQF 7. A relevant postgraduate qualification or equivalent qualification at NQF 8 will be an added advantage. This position also requires 8 years of work experience in the relevant field, 4 years of which should be in first line management position(s).
    • The following competencies are required of the candidate to be successful in this position: extensive knowledge and experience in providing strategic and annual performance planning support in a similar public service environment; demonstrate teamwork, good stakeholder engagement and management skills; good  knowledge and understanding of project management principles and frameworks; demonstrate proven ability for  planning, organizing, time management, analytical skills and problem solving skills; must have proven ability to work under pressure with diverse teams while being quality and safety conscious; extensive knowledge and experience in working with legislation, policies, procedures, processes, practices, systems, and frameworks related to provision of strategic coordination and oversight; good business writing and strategic analysis and communication skills at all levels (both verbal and written); good computer literacy and experience in the application of software tools including (Ms Word, MS Project, PowerPoint, Excel, Internet and Outlook); and possession of a valid driver’s license with at least one-year practical driving experience and a willingness to travel is essential.    

    Key Performance Responsibilities include:

    • Manage the development and review of SANBI Corporate Strategic Plan;
    • Manage the develop and review of SANBI Annual Performance Plans (APP) and Divisional Operational Plans;
    • Develop and implement internal controls for effective monitoring and reporting against SANBI APP;
    • Manage compliance with requirements and oversee internal and external audits of performance information;
    • Manage the development and review of internal policies/frameworks relating to organisational planning and performance management; and
    • Prepare draft annual performance agreements of CEO and Executive Managers and provide support on ad-hoc projects in CEO’s office.

    Animal Conservation Worker – Fur Seals and Penguins

    • This position requires a Grade 10, job specific qualification, or equivalent qualification with NQF 2 with 5 years of work experience in the relevant field, or a Grade 12, job specific qualification, or equivalent qualification with NQF 4 with 4 years of work experience in the relevant field. Higher certificate in Nature Conservation or equivalent qualification at NQF 5 will be an added advantage.
    • The following competencies are required for the candidate to be successful in this position: a passion for animals and knowledge of captive animal husbandry; be able to operate and function under pressure and after hours whilst being quality, cost, and safety conscious; proven ability to work with a diverse team and independently; be able to operate within the framework of the approved standard operating procedures; good planning, organizing, interpersonal, time management, and problem solving skills; excellent communication skills (both verbal and written); computer literacy and experience in the application of software tools including (Ms Word, Internet and Outlook) will be advantageous. This position requires the applicant to conduct physical labour and work outdoors in inclement weather. Applicants must be in possession of a valid driver’s licence.

    Key Performance Responsibilities include:

    • Assist with animal display, breeding and capture;
    • Perform general animal care, cleaning, & feeding;
    • Conduct animal training and visitor demonstrations;
    • Implement environmental enrichment;
    • Perform pest control and enclosure infrastructure maintenance;
    • Perform tool and equipment care; and
    • Perform administration, human resources, and stakeholder relations responsibilities.
