    Senior SHEQ Officer

    Job description

    KEY PERFORMANCE INDICATORS:

    • Establish, document, implement and maintain a Cluster/Divisional SHEQ management system in accordance with the ISO 9001 and/or ISO 17025, ISO14001 and ISO45001 standards, as well as applicable legislation
    • Implement, maintain and promote SHEQ and Radiation Protection training and awareness programs
    • Perform regular SHEQ briefings, inspections and job observations
    • Facilitate the risk identification, assessment, prevention and mitigating control activities in the allocated clusters/divisions
    • Investigate incidents, resolve and close out investigations in a timely manner.
    • Investigate, evaluate and procure suitable personal protective equipment
    • Ensure the calibration and maintenance of equipment, including regular checks and compliance with standards.
    • Ensure proper storage, handling and disposal of hazardous and sensitive substances and materials
    • Ensure that the samples are properly handled
    • Co-ordinate divisional and project specific medical surveillance
    • Co-ordinate and arrange project specific personal biological and environmental monitoring with external accredited organisations
    • Manage the issuance, use, and monitoring of TLD badges
    • Ensure compliance with all relevant SHEQ legislation and organisational policies.
    • Lead and participate in SHEQ audits and inspections.
    • Contribute towards the d evelopment and implementation of SHEQ performance metrics and key performance indicators
    • Provide SHEQ guidance and support to project teams and management.
    • Stay updated with industry best practices and advancements in SHEQ management.
    • Foster a culture of continuous improvement in SHEQ practices.
    • Compile internal and external reports required as per requirements
    • Ensure that divisional SHEQ documents and records are created, updated and controlled according to procedural requirements

    Minimum requirements

    JOB KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE:

    • 5 years technical working experience in mining or similar industry (at least 2 years of the 5 years should include exposure and experience in mining and materials processing SHEQ)
    • ISO Standards: ISO14001, ISO45001, ISO9001 where applicable ISO17025 and related ISO standards
    • Specialist knowledge of the relevant legislation; OHS Act, COID Act, Hazardous Substances Act, Environmental Management Air Quality Act, National Environmental Management Waste Act etc.
    • Radiation protection vocational training offered by Chamber of Mines or an equivalent approved course and supervised project where relevant

    QUALIFICATIONS:

    • Minimum: BSc in Chemistry, or related field coupled with a recognised SHEQ qualification (NQF level 6)
    • SHEQ Courses: leading of HAZOP study course, risk assessment course; accident investigator; problem solving and root cause analysis
    • Registration or member of environmental or radiation protection professional body or SACNASP (South African Council for Natural Scientific Professions) Candidate member

    Chief Scientist: Mineral Science Group (Re-advert)

    Job description

    KEY PERFORMANCE AREAS:

    • Assist Head/Divisional manager to maintain and expand on project work from the mining/metallurgical industry and related research agencies, in line with Division’s current business plans, by providing competence and professional expertise, and interacting with clients,collaborators and potential partners.
    • Ascertain needs of clients and the industry and propose appropriate project work, both research and commercial oriented. Identify opportunities for innovation and commercialisation.
    • Lead and execute projects in which interactions with stakeholders (internal and external) are required at an advanced level of technical expertise. This will involve algorithm/software development to extract appropriate information, and modelling, simulation and interpretation of mineral behaviour in processing and other environments using, primarily, mineralogical inputs.
    • Train, supervise and technically mentor the staff in the group, so as to improve technical quality and turnaround times, and promote innovative outcomes, thus enhancing the value proposition of the group to clients and collaborators.
    • Leads technology trends in mineralogy research at a national and international level.
    • Execute projects so as to meet the time scheduling agreed to with client/stakeholder, contain costs for the Division and deliver valid conclusions with technical efficiency and professionalism.
    • Comply with the internal administration requirements of Mintek and the Mineralogy Division with respect to labour and machine time capture, business governance, professional reporting, project planning and management.
    • Develop protocols/workflows for optimal operation and performance of specialised imaging equipment.
    • Ensure that QES procedures are followed, and project work is executed to produce valid conclusions and with maximum overall efficiency - technically and financially.
    • Ensure that the documentation of work and procedures is appropriately captured and produce advanced professional level reports, publications, and conference contributions.

    Leadership

    • Makes decisions having major impact on the research direction and outcomes at national level.
    • Lead multiple highly complex assignments/projects that require high levels of integration and specialised
      knowledge and skills, as well as strong guidance to subordinates to deliver impact.
    • Exercise a high degree of foresight, creativity and judgement based on firm scientific / engineering
      principles to ensure that large research projects / programmes are planned and guided to deliver
      significant novelty and importance.
    • Leads optimisation projects at national and international level.
    • Leads technology trends in mineralogy research at a national and international level.

    Strategy

    • Needs to interpret the organisational strategy to ensure that research is aligned with the organisational strategic choices.
    • Assess the environment to determine opportunities for research.
    • Develop new concepts, models and approaches as an individual technical authority/contributor.

    Financial Stability

    • Prepares large funding proposals (R 1 million or higher) to personally attract funding from a variety of sources for highly complex projects. 
    • Ensure an external revenue contribution to support the activities of the research group.

    Execution, People and planning

    • Analyses and executes coordinated research addressing complex and often unique problems that are encountered by the specific industry sector.
    • Analyses, interprets and reports on highly complex research outcomes and is regarded as a national expert in a broad field, or an international expert in a specialized field.
    • Management of large multiyear projects and programmes, including resource and execution planning.

    Governance and Risk Management

    • As a decision maker be responsible for the assessment and management of all risks related to the 
      projects/programmes under direct control.
    • Responsible for technical signoff of the work of junior staff.
    • Responsible for significant equipment/facilities and their procurement/maintenance.

    Relationship Management and Reporting

    • Work independently and provide instruction to subordinates and junior staff. Receive no additional guidance and instruction on unusual and complex problems.
    • Prepare reports, presentations and publications at the level of a national / international expert.
    • Will lead, guide, mentor and train staff and will supervise post-graduate students.

    Minimum requirements

    • PhD in a relevant scientific field relating to the Discipline (science or engineering)
    • At least 10 years’ experience in the field of data analysis and modelling, directly related to the
      duties and responsibilities specified.
    • SACNASP or ECSA registered.
    • Fundamental knowledge of operating in a laboratory environment. Any experience with image
      analysis and research equipment is advantageous.
    • Advanced knowledge of research principles and methodologies across disciplines.
    • Knowledge of advanced data analysis, methods, and techniques.

    Chief Engineer: Pyrometallurgy

    Job description

    KEY PERFORMANCE INDICATORS:

    • Perform the total scope of work in the Division, including business development, fundamental and applied research, technology transfer and commercialisation.
    • Provide strategic leadership in driving high impact RDI programmes, commercial projects, contract research and funding strategies to drive productivity and ensure the financial sustainability of the Division.
    • Provide expert leadership in formulating and executing disciplinary and multi-disciplinary assignments that require integration of specialist knowledge and skills, and function as the key technical resource in the Division. This includes providing expert and specialist support in the planning, demonstration, and managing complex pilot scale demonstration projects.
    • Actively taking part in international funding proposals to attract funding leading to the establishment and sustenance of world-class RDI infrastructure, research programmes, and human capital capacity at Mintek.
    • Providing full administrative support to the Division, including managing and coordinating tender processes for CAPEX and large scale infrastructure projects.
    • Contribute to human capital development, including providing postgraduate supervision where necessary.
    • Contribute to the visibility and credibility of the Division through building and sustaining long-term collaborations and partnerships, both locally and globally.
    • Provide disciplinary and multi-disciplinary assessment and guidance on strategic, governance and operational risks affecting the Division.

    JOB KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE:

    • Minimum 10 years’ experience in pyrometallurgy research and/or technology development.
    • A strong understanding of pyrometallurgy and engineering design fundamentals non-negotiable.
    • Demonstrable experience with designing and operating electric arc furnaces.
    • Demonstrable experienced in managing complex technical projects, particularly from concept to market.
    • A strong understanding of the global metals, minerals and energy industry is non-negotiable.
    • Experience in designing pyrometallurgical processes using thermochemical software tools such as PyroSim™ and FactSage™.
    • Experience with coding in C and Python is an added advantage.
    • Knowledge of technology development, technology transfer, IP management and commercialisation supported by demonstrable evidence of applied research and technological outputs is highly advantageous.
    • A strong portfolio of publications in peer-reviewed ISI-rated journals.
    • Knowledge or experience with SHEQ systems is non-negotiable.
    • Demonstrated ability to attract investment or RDI funding is highly advantageous.

    Minimum requirements

    QUALIFICATIONS:

    • A minimum PhD in Metallurgical/Chemical/Process Engineering, or equivalent, with a strong focus on pyrometallurgy research and/or technology development.
    • Professional registration is an added advantage.
    • Experience with postgraduate supervision is an added advantage
