    Lecturer.2.01 - Unit for Undergraduate Medical Education

    Main purpose of the job

    • The main purpose of this position is to coordinate, oversee and support all teaching and administrative activities for the MBBCh 5 and 6 (GEMP 3 and 4) programmes.  
    • Additional duties are specified in the “Key performance areas” section below.

    Key Performance areas

    The primary responsibility of the incumbent will be the

    • Coordination of the clinical training of medical students in the final two years (MBBCh 5 to MBBCh 6) of the MBBCh degree including the general management of the clinical rotations and integrating processes. This post will have specific focus on the final 2 years of the MBBCh degree.
    • Coordination of research training of medical students in the final three years (MBBCh 4 to MBBCh 6) of the MBBCh degree.
    • Coordinate and offer advice to the clinical teachers at various hospital sites. Act as a liaison staff member between staff and students to improve and enhance the educational environment for GEMP students.
    • Assist the clinical departments with overseeing the allocation of students in the Extended Academic Platform (EAP) ensuring fair allocations across the EAP.
    • Assist with organization and review of GEMP course materials (handbooks, notes, etc.).
    • Be prepared to work in a variety of settings as determined by the supervisor (the Director of Undergraduate Medical Education).
    • The incumbent will be working with medical students in improving their clinical skills through tutorials and practical sessions.
    • Will prepare teaching, teaching materials and web pages to support the delivery of the clinical and communication skills programme from MBBCh 5 to final year.
    • Participate in assessment process such as MCQs, OSCE and OSPE including setting and marking of these, in particular, the integrated examinations in MBBCh 5 and 6.
    • Assist with faculty staff development through workshops to train staff and simulated patients.

    Minimum requirements to apply for this position:

    The successful applicant must have:

    • MBBCh (medical doctor) degree from an accredited South African University
    • Post graduate experience and/or qualification (a medical specialist qualification would serve as a strong recommendation)
    • Registered, and in good standing, with the HPCSA as an Independent medical practitioner would serve as a strong recommendation
    • A South African citizen
    • Evidence of a passion for medical education
    • At least 5 years’ experience in:
    • teaching in a health sciences discipline at undergraduate level

    OR

    • a Health science education/ medical education unit at a tertiary institution.
    • Academic administrative experience and membership of Faculty/University level committees

    Abilities, qualifications or experience that would be an advantage in your application

    • Previous experience with assessment, curriculum development and evaluation and/or student support
    • Health professional degree with a Masters degree in Health Sciences Education, completed or nearing completion

    Brief Description        

    • SEF invites applications for the above position in order to fill vacancies in the Finance Division of SEF. The position is instituted as part of the FirstRand Foundation endowment initiative in the field of financial data sciences.

    Lecturer 2.01 - School of Chemistry

    Qualifications

    • PhD in Chemistry with a minimum of 5 years teaching experience at undergraduate level.
    • A proven ability to develop university learning programs and new courses or enrich existing courses.
    • Experience with administration of large classes with an emphasis on course coordination.
    • Proven record of engagement with the scholarship of teaching and learning.  
    • Demonstrate strong leadership and organisational qualities, as well as excellent communication and interpersonal skills.

    Duties

    • Provide academic leadership and ongoing curriculum planning of all first-year chemistry courses.
    • Liaise with lecture staff and the laboratory manager to ensure a cohesive and stimulating learning experience for students.
    • Deliver engaging lectures and tutorials and contribute to the ongoing development of teaching materials and resources.
    • Develop assessments, provide feedback on student performance, and compile student grades.
    • Foster a positive and supportive learning environment for first-year students, promoting their academic success and well-being. Maintain a research profile in Chemical Education or related fields within the School of Chemistry.

    Regional Lead Researcher 3.05

    Brief posting description

    • Generally, WBS academics work exclusively with postgraduate students and senior executives. They deliver highly-rated learning, higher degree supervision, accredited research, and opinion leadership on business critical issues.  This WBS/CAPSI researcher would work exclusively for the Centre on African Philanthropy and Social Investment particularly on a donor funded project that will run for five (5) years. The project is funded by the Mastercard Foundation and focuses on 17 countries in Africa. It seeks to examine the extent to which the non-profit sector contributes to dignified employment for young Africans.
    • CAPSI has already appointed three regional lead researchers (two males and one female) for East, Southern and West Africa. CAPSI is now looking for a female regional lead researcher for North Africa to be based in Johannesburg but there is a possibility also to be based in North Africa.  Working with other project implementation team, each regional lead researcher is responsible for the development of the research design, landscaping, selection and training of country partners. In addition, each researcher works closely with CAPSI team and management and contribute towards the overall design, coordination, management and oversight of the project including research functions in countries for which they are responsible.

    Minimum academic requirements

    • A relevant PhD in any of the following disciplines: Economics, Development Studies, International Development, Non-Profit Management and/or Philanthropic Studies, Behavioural Sciences, Statistics, Social Sciences, Data Science and Public Policy Studies.
    • A demonstrable track record of peer reviewed research outputs is essential. A demonstrable track record of research fund raising would be a distinct advantage.
    • Demonstrable expertise in both advanced qualitative and quantitative research methods, including statistical analysis.
    • Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English, fluency in French, Arabic, Swahili, or Portuguese will be an added advantage.
    • Experience in gender and intersectionality research will be an advantage.
    • Must be able to lead multi-stakeholder partnerships.
    • Must speak English and preferably Arabic or French.

    • The successful candidate is expected to establish an active and well-funded research programme, publishing research in internationally accredited journals, as well as attracting and graduating talented postgraduate students.
    • They will be required to teach undergraduate courses, mainly linked to sedimentology and stratigraphy and contribute to leading and organising at least one field trip at an undergraduate level.

    Brief Description        

    • The School of Chemical and Metallurgical Engineering invites applications from suitably qualified candidates who possess a first degree in Metallurgical Engineering or Chemical Engineering (with a major in extractive metallurgy), as well as a relevant PhD degree, for appointment as Professor or Associate Professor in the field of extractive metallurgical engineering with a focus on hydrometallurgy.
    • The aim of this position is to take over the work and legacy of the DSI/NRF SARChI: Hydrometallurgy and Sustainable Development Chair which is focused on hydrometallurgy and hosted within the school.  
    • The successful candidate will be expected to lead research in both fundamental topics, innovation and applications in line with the scope of the Chair.  The candidate will also carry out undergraduate and postgraduate teaching in metallurgical engineering with a focus on hydrometallurgy.

    QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS:

    • First degree in Metallurgical Engineering or Chemical Engineering (with a major in extractive metallurgy), as well as a relevant PhD degree are a requirement for appointment as Professor / Associate Professor in the field of extractive metallurgical engineering with a focus on hydrometallurgy.
    •  A reasonable period of experience in a research capacity will be required with evidence of research output and supervision of postgraduate students to completion.  The field of specialization is in hydrometallurgy, and the successful candidate will be encouraged to grow the research group within the school and create links with industry partners.  
    • The successful candidate will be encouraged to pursue further training in higher education.  
    • Registration as a professional engineer (Pr.Eng.) and NRF-rating will be strongly encouraged particularly for local applicants.

    DUTIES:

    • The successful candidate will be expected to demonstrate expertise in subjects comprising metallurgical engineering and the ability to:
    • Teach both undergraduate and postgraduate students.
    • Engage in continuous development of the programme, adapting it to the ever-changing challenges facing the university or society.
    • Undertake research in the area of hydrometallurgy in a productive manner and publish research papers in accredited journals.
    • Expand existing and initiate new research programmes, raise and manage funds from national and international funding agencies and industry.
    • Supervise postgraduate students at master’s and doctoral level qualifications in metallurgical engineering.
    • Undertake assigned school duties of an administrative nature.
