    Lecturer .2.01

    Requirements, Key Performance Areas & Competencies

    • The successful candidate is expected to establish an active and well-funded research programme, publishing research in internationally accredited journals, as well as attracting and graduating talented postgraduate students. They will be required to teach undergraduate courses, mainly linked to sedimentology and stratigraphy and contribute to leading and organising at least one field trip at an undergraduate level.

    Applicants must provide evidence of:

    • A PhD in geological sciences.
    • A track record of skills and research interests in the broad fields of sedimentology, stratigraphy and palaeoclimate.
    • Strong field mapping skills and the ability to co-lead undergraduate mapping field trips.
    • Skills in geological and/or computational modelling as applied to sedimentological or palaeoclimatic datasets.
    • Appropriate evidence of excellent postgraduate student supervision and mentorship.
    • An independent research record with publications in internationally recognised journals will be essential for the senior lecturer position.
    • An appropriate record of fundraising for research projects and postgraduate student support.
    • Excellent oral and written communication skills.

    Lecturer (x3) Part-time (50%)

    Duties:

    • Teaching theory and practice of Drama Therapy at Honours, Masters or Short Course levels;
    • Compiling the course outline and course reading material;
    • Monitoring and reporting on student attendance and progress;
    • Coordinating course examinations and submission of course marks;
    • Research Supervision at Honours and Master’s levels in Drama Therapy;
    • Contributing personal creative and traditional research output to Drama for Life, WSOA;
    • Contributing toward clinical, psychoeducational, communitybased and theatre therapy project supervision and Drama Therapy site partnerships;
    • Making a significant contribution to curriculum development for an integrated and embodied Drama, Theatre and Performance approach to mental health, illness and disease for the purposes of a human rights and social justice culture appropriate to South Africa and the global condition;
    • Support with academic administration, departmental governance, school level committee representation, student consultations, attend staff meetings and related activities as workload allows.

    Qualifications and Requirements 

    • An Honours and a Master’s degree in Drama Therapy as a professional field of specialisation;
    • Demonstrating a clear PhD trajectory.
    • Registered as a Drama Therapist with the HPCSA;
    • Evidence of personal creative and, or traditional forms of research (innovative workshops, performances, arts interventions, chapters, videography and documentary etc.)
    • One or more of the following specialisations:
    •  Experience in Dance Movement Therapies or related Arts Therapies  with teaching experience on tertiary level.
    •  Experience in the coordination and supervision of clinical sites, schools and community centres for the placement of Hons and MA drama Therapy and Applied Drama and Theatre students, for the successful completion of their degrees.
    •  Experience in managing and coordinating student wellness programmes and support on a departmental level, integrated with the development and coordination of internships to support graduate transition into the world of work in the fields of Drama Therapy and Applied Drama and Theatre.

    Academic Head Of Division _ Geriatrics

    Brief Description        
    Qualifications:

    •  A medical qualification, registerable with the HPCSA,
    • The candidate must be a specialist in Geriatrics Medicine and a full-time employee within the Wits Teaching platform (Current employees and Joint staff).
    • At least 5 years' experience as a Geriatrics Specialist,
    • At least 5 years’ experience at mid-management level,
    • Appropriate teaching and research experience are essential requirements for the position, whereas a PhD would be advantageous.
    • The applicant must have demonstrated well-developed proven communication, organizational, problem solving, leadership and project management skills.
    •  Must have the ability to manage change in the division.
    • Management experience, in particular academic activities of postgraduate and undergraduate students is a requirement,
    • Be at least at the level of Adjunct or Associate Professor, or qualify to be awarded the academic title, although other Geriatric specialists, meeting all the above criteria may apply as well. 

      Duties:

    • Formulate an academic vision and designs and execute both undergraduate and post graduate teaching in line with the vision,
    • Strengthen research in the division of Geriatrics
    • Provide tools and create an academic environment for optimal teaching and training for all categories of staff (academic and professional) and students, both under – and postgraduate,
    • Set teaching, training, and research goals in collaboration with other members of the academic and clinical service staff,  
    • Formulates assessment tools for all academic programmes,
    • Benchmark academic outputs against national performance and identify opportunities to approve,
    • Collaborate with clinical heads in improving academic outputs,
    • Establish and maintain academic excellence,
    • Promote staff development and manage staff performance and assessment within the division,
    • Mentor academic and professional staff for promotion in the university,
    • Provide support to the divisions that are part of the department,
    • Work with divisional heads to ensure sound financial and Human Resources management,
    • Encourage collaboration between divisions working across the teaching platforms,
    • Chairs academic meetings in the division,
    • Attend divisional meetings at each of the academic training facilities,

    Brief Description

    Lecturer

    Brief Description        

    • The Department of African Languages at the University of the Witwatersrand is seeking to make an appointment at the level of Lecturer (to start on 1 September 2024). 

    Requirements: 

    • Experience in teaching formal and/or computational linguistics;
    • Ability to teach isiZulu and/or Sesotho second language (L2) acquisition  courses;
    • A PhD in any area of formal and/or computational linguistics;
    • Evidence of research ability, with 1-2 peer-reviewed publications;

    Lecturer / Senior Lecturer

    Job Description

    • The Department of Political Studies at the University of the Witwatersrand is looking to appoint one (1) new member of academic staff at the level of Lecturer or Senior Lecturer. 
    • This is a permanent position at the rank of either Lecturer or Senior Lecturer (1 position). The Department is seeking applications from researchers with expertise in gender studies, sexuality and feminist theory and politics.

    Senior Researcher (AC.07) / Researcher (AC.08)

    Brief Description        

    • The successful candidate will assume responsibility for research design, protocol development, and execution, and ensure delivery on targets according to strict deadlines. The candidate will have the opportunity to lead and/or work on multi-country research and collaborate with counterparts in Kenya, Uganda, and the United Kingdom. The candidate will also have the opportunity to supervise post-graduate students and participate in the teaching of relevant master’s courses offered by the WSPH. The person will work under the mentorship and guidance of Professor Laetitia Rispel, who is the AFRHiCARE lead in South Africa.

    Qualifications and Experience

    • A health professional or public health practitioner with a PhD in the health sciences, or the social and economic sciences
    • At least 3-5 years in a public health research setting (university or science council)
    • Evidence of conceptualising, designing and/or conducting complex and large HPSR research.
    • Evidence of active research, teaching, postgraduate supervision and consistent outputs. In the case of the researcher, suitable applicants should have at least three (3) publications in accredited journals, with first authorship of at least one (1) publication. A senior researcher should have at least 15 accredited research publications, of which the applicant should be first or senior author on at least eight (8) publications.
    • Experience of research management/ administration (e.g. reporting, budgeting, financial management, etc).
    • Ability to work independently and as part of a dynamic multi-disciplinary team.
    • Willingness and ability to travel
    • Good written and verbal communication skills.

    Responsibilities

    • Provide research leadership to ensure execution of the research objectives in the work streams of AFRHiCARE in South Africa, specifically Work Stream 4 on the Health Workforce.
    • Ensure development and submission of quality research protocols for ethics approval and health authority permission.
    • Ensure execution of research and delivery of agreed upon deadlines.
    • Collaborate and engage actively with AFRHiCARE partners in Kenya, Uganda, and the United Kingdom.
    • Supervise postgraduate students (master’s and PhD) students whose research focuses on AFRHiCARE projects.
    • Undertake local and international travel to ensure delivery of AFRHiCARE targets.
    • Liaise and communicate with partners in the university, government, and community-based organisations.
