Description
PURPOSE OF THE JOB
Supervise personnel and control analytical processes in the laboratory by ensuring that all equipment, material and resources are available and optimally functioning to provide a professional laboratory service to the mine/smelter.
SAFETY, HEALTH, ENVIRONMENT AND QUALITY
- Identify and assess level of continuous risk exposures in area of responsibility by considering exposures to business, financial, legal issues, people, equipment, material, environment, processes, etc.
- Consider the level of risk, apply mitigation and implement control measures for residual risk (set objectives, minimum requirements, etc.)
- Comply with SHEQ requirements (SHEQ Toolbox)
- Utilise the Integrated Management System (IMS) to initiate, investigate and report SHEQ status.
- Perform LSBO, PTO, Near miss, MOC management plans auditing and action management on IMS
- Focus and drive mini business target performance of the laboratory and related reporting against such targets
- Participate in formal SHEQ Audits
- Participate in Significant Incident investigations regarding customer complaints and non-conformance
PEOPLE
- Ensure discipline is maintained (absenteeism, lateness, overtime, misconduct, etc.)
- Plan and schedule shifts in relation to availability of personnel and workload requirements
- Supervise performance against set targets and competencies
- Coach, mentor and train personnel on various methodology implemented within the laboratory
- Participate in recruitment process
- Manage KPI’s of reporting personnel
- Authorised to train reporting employees (ISO 17025)
CUSTOMERS
- Ensure Customer Satisfaction
- Monitor product specifications before authorisation of results

- Ensure that material, tools and equipment is available and properly functioning for all shifts (create job cards for maintenance)
- Ensure the development and improvement of all analytical methods within the laboratory
- Supervise and monitor the implementation of the Quality system according to ISO 17025 requirements by all laboratory personnel (control charts, checklists and control work)
- Focus on turn-around time of samples
- Maintain and implement work instructions and analytical standards for daily laboratory operations
- Ensure effective stock control and ordering of items or services through the procurement system of the organisation
- Ensure that all analytical reports and records are legible, available and correct
- Accepts responsibility as Technical Signatory for the laboratory results and carry legal appointment as required by ISO 17025.
- Compiling the Certificate of Analysis by assuming responsibility by signing off the certificate, as technical signatory
- Have sufficient current knowledge of the method used, as well as the objectives of the test/calibration/inspection.
- Be able to assess and interpret the data, and act on any trends observed.
- Ensure the quality of the results and be confident when authorising results or measurements.
- Have comprehension of the Technical Requirements of the relevant International or National standard
- Be conversant with the ISO 9001 quality management system implemented within the organisation.
- Authorise, check, interpret and process daily results
- Participate in Samancor Group ISO 17025 audits
- Authorise to develop, modify, validate methods and roll out procedures to ensure quality control measures are integrated into the laboratory processes
- Be able to do all back calculations on all instrumentation outputs
- Prepare and analyse samples for continuous evaluation of TS (Technical Signature) competency as required by ISO 17025
- Coordinate the handling of subcontracted test work
- Perform standby duties
