    Lecturer

    The successful candidate will be expected to:

    • Leverage their research standing to enhance the profile of the Department in relevant academic networks;
    • Teach courses at undergraduate and postgraduate levels in Communication and/or Media Studies as well as in a selection of the above-mentioned areas, and provide leadership in learning and teaching;
    • Supervise postgraduate Honours and have the protentional to supervise Master’s students in Communication and/or Media Studies and in a selection of the above-mentioned areas in addition to mentoring students;
    • Serve on a range of committees and contribute to some administrative duties at departmental level e.g. co-ordination of module or dept rep on faculty committee.
    • Establish and maintain community outreach activities in accordance with their speciality and consistent with the University's Institutional Operating Plan.

    Minimum Requirements

    • Master’s degree in Linguistics/Applied Linguistics with a specialisation in, among others, Communication and/or Media Studies
    • 1 Publication in an accredited journal or an equivalent recognised output, commensurate with the position of Lecturer in a research-led institution;
    • Potential to supervise postgraduate students (Honours and Master’s);
    • Some experience in both face-to-face and online teaching as well as how to design teaching and learning material to cater for both modes at university level; and
    • Knowledge of developments in contemporary communication and media and mediatised platforms.

    Recommendations : 

    • PhD in Linguistics/Applied Linguistics/African Languages.
    • Proficiency in or ability to work with African languages (this includes Afrikaans). 
    • Demonstrated evidence of knowledge of Critical Media Studies and/or Critical Theory.

    Co-ordinator: International Relations

    The key performance areas of the incumbent include the following: 

    • External/internal liaison in line with providing an excellent client service.
    • Work with the Manager to develop a comprehensive portfolio of international capacity development programmes and work packages in line with UWC’s strategic direction and needs.
    • Coordinate and facilitate student exchange and study abroad programmes.
    • Coordinate Internationalisation at Home and Internationalisation of the Curriculum activities.
    • Liaison of the partnerships across networks.
    • Support the Directorate, in taking responsibility for the coordination of international projects and student exchange
    • Coordination of International Relation’s office administration inclusive of Project Administration and Financial Administration 
    • Arrange activities in support of the programme & project objectives.
    • Ensure that financial obligations are adhered to for project and exchange student coordination.
    • Report generation.
    • Collating information and providing feedback to the Manager and the partners as required.

     
    Minimum Requirements
    Minimum Requirements (Qualification and Experience)

    • A relevant Bachelor’s degree or an equivalent qualification at an NQF Level 7
    • 5 years’ relevant experience working within the Higher Education sector
    • 3 years of the 5 years should be of the International and African Higher Education sector

    Required competencies (skills, knowledge and behavioural attributes): 

    • Ability to work independently and ability to use his/her own initiative to resolve problems and to be pro-active to get things done.
    • Strong written and verbal communication skills. Ability to work in a team and work under pressure.
    • Excellent attention to detail and deadlines.
    • Understanding of protocols when dealing with high-level international guests.
    • Financial coordination and project management skills.
    • Ability to deal with conflict.
    • Working knowledge of MS WORD, MS EXCEL and MS PowerPoint.

    Researcher

    Role Clarification & Key Performance Areas

The successful candidate will join a dynamic and supportive Faculty dedicated to teaching and research, as well as to overall student development. The ideal candidate will be highly motivated and willing to make a significant contribution to the development of the Faculty.
    • The Centre for Legal Integration in Africa (CLIA), a research centre in the Faculty of Law, seeks to recruit a full-time, permanent researcher from July 2023. CLIA pioneers interdisciplinary research, policy engagement, and social outreach on the interaction of normative orders in Africa, with a focus on dialogue between state laws and indigenous African laws.     The successful candidate for the researcher position will be responsible for the following key performance areas: 

    • Conduct research and publish in the field of legal pluralism and human rights, participate in research projects, and work closely with the Director of CLIA
    • Facilitation of learning, primarily at postgraduate level
    • Supervising undergraduate and postgraduate students
    • Academic and general administration
    • Curriculum development and assessment
    • Community engagement
    • Manage CLIA’s social media pages (Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn) and assist with the updating of the webpage
    • Assist with the organisation of academic events such as webinars, seminars, conferences, and public lectures

    Minimum Requirements
    Requirements for the position:

    • Doctorate degree or equivalent in law, development, anthropology, peace and conflict studies, or similar field.

    The following will serve as a strong recommendation for appointment:

    • Evidence of supervision experience at LLB or Masters level
    • Teaching experience at LLB or Masters level
    • Evidence of peer reviewed research publications
    • Evidence of successful grants (including study) and project management

    Competencies required:

    • Ability to liaise with stakeholders in government, academia and civil society.
    • Ability to work independently and within a team in a multicultural environment.
    • Ability to work under pressure and to adapt to dynamic work circumstances.
    • Ability to develop manuscripts for publication in accredited, high impact journals. 
    • Experience in organising and facilitating online and face-to-face academic events.
