    Role Clarification & Key Performance Areas

    • The University of the Western Cape (UWC) enjoys national and international acclaim for its continuing contribution to democratic change in South Africa and for making quality education accessible to all South Africans and developing centres of excellence of national importance. The successful candidate will join a dynamic and supportive Faculty dedicated to teaching and research, as well as to overall student development. The ideal candidate will be highly motivated and willing to make a significant contribution to the development of the Faculty.
    • The Centre for Legal Integration in Africa (CLIA), a research centre in the Faculty of Law, seeks to recruit a full-time, permanent researcher from July 2023. CLIA pioneers interdisciplinary research, policy engagement, and social outreach on the interaction of normative orders in Africa, with a focus on dialogue between state laws and indigenous African laws.     The successful candidate for the researcher position will be responsible for the following key performance areas: 

    • Conduct research and publish in the field of legal pluralism and human rights, participate in research projects, and work closely with the Director of CLIA
    • Facilitation of learning, primarily at postgraduate level
    • Supervising undergraduate and postgraduate students
    • Academic and general administration
    • Curriculum development and assessment
    • Community engagement
    • Manage CLIA’s social media pages (Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn) and assist with the updating of the webpage
    • Assist with the organisation of academic events such as webinars, seminars, conferences, and public lectures

    Minimum Requirements
    Requirements for the position:

    • Doctorate degree or equivalent in law, development, anthropology, peace and conflict studies, or similar field.

    The following will serve as a strong recommendation for appointment:

    • Evidence of supervision experience at LLB or Masters level
    • Teaching experience at LLB or Masters level
    • Evidence of peer reviewed research publications
    • Evidence of successful grants (including study) and project management

    Competencies required:

    • Ability to liaise with stakeholders in government, academia and civil society.
    • Ability to work independently and within a team in a multicultural environment.
    • Ability to work under pressure and to adapt to dynamic work circumstances.
    • Ability to develop manuscripts for publication in accredited, high impact journals. 
    • Experience in organising and facilitating online and face-to-face academic events.
