    Lecturer/Specialist - Department of Paediatrics - Faculty of Health Sciences

    RESPONSIBILITIES:

    • Providing specialist paediatric clinical services and patient management within study sites and Tshwane Health District when needed;
    • Participating in the departmental outreach programmes to the catchment area, both for direct services and capacity building;
    • Developing and review clinical protocols and guidelines for quality paediatric management;
    • Conducting clinical and mortality audits;
    • Strengthening referral pathways;
    • Building capacity for the provision of integrated and patient-centred care for children and their caregivers in selected study sites;
    • Providing training and mentoring of junior medical staff (medical officers and interns) in study sites and Tshwane Health District when needed;
    • Providing training and mentorship for the research assistants, study nurse and any other study/district staff as necessary (clinical training);
    • Co-authoring relevant publications;
    • Participating in other dissemination activities as the need arises, e.g. conference presentations.

    MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS: 

    • A Healthcare Profession’s qualification with an associated Master’s degree (MMed);
    • FC Paed(SA);
    • 1 DHET accredited publication;
    • 1 years’ experience as a paediatric specialist, preferably obtained in a public service environment;
    • 1 years’ experience with teaching and supervision of students and junior medical staff.

    REQUIRED COMPETENCIES (SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE AND BEHAVIOURAL ATTRIBUTES):

    • Specialist medical knowledge skills and competencies in paediatrics;
    • Clinical knowledge in the fields of MNCH, VTP and HIV;
    • Knowledge of relevant protocols, policies, regulations, public service legislation, and  guidelines;
    • Medical ethics, epidemiology, research and statistics;
    • Clinical skills related to the paediatric field;
    • Mentoring, coaching, facilitation, teaching and training skills;
    • Proficiency in MS Office Suite;
    • Speak a local language;
    • Ability to work within a diverse team;
    • Willingness to learn;
    • Excellent communication skills;
    • Flexibility and adaptability in a fast-paced environment;
    • Professional conduct and appearance;
    • Attention to detail and a commitment to excellence.

    ADDED ADVANTAGES AND PREFERENCES:

    • Any short course in HIV and or TB Management;
    • Experience in health system strengthening, quality improvement and capacity building in the fields of neonatal and child health, vertical transmission prevention, and paediatric ART;
    • Experience in neonatal and postnatal care provision;
    • Interest in child health;
    • Experience in community outreach and community education;
    • Knowledge of the Tshwane District Health services.
