    Data Risk Manager

    The Data Risk Manager provides a comprehensive range of Data Risk Management services to the enterprise and cluster DMO’s and business functions. The Data Risk Manager is a second Line of Defense (LoD) Risk function.

    Job Responsibilities

    • Support, partner and influence internal business clients.
    • Participate in risk & data management forums, contribute to continuous improvement of risk and data management practices.
    • Provide thought leadership and guidance to business and supporting functions in implementing data and risk management practices.
    • Provide oversight and guidance during risk assessments, and partner with the business to develop appropriate controls and effectiveness testing.
    • Stay current on the changing data ecosystem, industry initiatives and regulatory environment in order to understand the impacts to the business.
    • Undertakes an independent validation of the health of the data in the organisation, including data quality, adherence to data governance standards, the embedment of data policies, processes and DMO capacitation.
    • Effectively challenge the 1st LoD business partners, 2nd LoD advisors (Compliance, Legal & Risk) and 3rd LoD (Auditors) on data risk matters.
    • Demonstrate the business value in Data Governance to all levels of the organization
    • Partner with enterprise data teams across the 1st & 2a (LoD) business partners, providing advice and guidance to align strategies & corresponding capabilities to ensure a consistent, best in class governance framework
      • Drive for decisions regarding the management of the data risks
      • Analyse data and form an independent assessment /opinion of data risks and;
      • Identify existing risks themes and/or trends that indicate emerging data risks;
    • Design and manage the development of an independent view of the Business Data Risk Profile as well as other monitoring tools to enable Data Risk Managers to:
    • Oversee the data governance strategy, providing support, facilitating and coordinating data governance activities

    The position requires strong communication and customer liaison skills, the ability to work independently, a strong analytical and data mind set, technical modelling and DQ skills and the ability to rally people to a common course.

    The role/team will require one to focus on all the data domain areas on the DAMA-DMBOK.

    Data Governance

    Principal Responsibilities

    • Assist in creating, defining and maintaining the Data Governance strategy, framework, process documentation, and data governance policies to effectively manage Nedbank’s data.
    • Engage and align with businesses priorities to ensure that the availability, usability, integrity, consistency, auditability and security of data is appropriate and within the risk appetite of the organisation.
    • Ensuring adherence and alignment to Nedbank enterprise data initiatives and strategies
    • Provide feedback to the cluster DMO’s, Data Management Working Group, Nedbank Data Governance Council and other forums with respect to relevant data concerns and analytical findings
    • Be consulted for input on, and be informed of, all data management services as they relate to data
    • Provide input, related to data quality deliverables.
    • Actively participate in the workings and outputs of the various DMO Workgroups
    • Conduct data health investigations across the Enterprise cluster DMO’s and enabling technologies.

    Additional Principal Responsibilities

    Data Analytics and Advisory

    • Become a trusted advisor to stakeholders and influence decision-making by providing guidance and support on data practises, including appropriate analytical methods and solutions.
    • Stakeholder engagement to ensure understanding of data challenges, requirements and opportunities
    • Engage with stakeholders to obtain an understanding of their data quality practices to contract, manage and validate that they meet expectations.
    • Investigate and report findings
    • Conduct root-cause analysis and present finding in a scientific manner
    • Advise project teams and system owners on data governance standards during the design and implementation of new technologies and systems
    • Validate embedment of data management practises in all enablement activities.

    Data Quality Management

    • Ensure efficiency of data controls at a process-level throughout the data life-cycle
    • Validate how data is defined to manage data dictionaries, data glossaries and associated processes.
    • Validate and advise on data cleansing initiatives
    • Measure and report on data states
    • Assist in formulating different types of data rules and to manage the life-cycle of these rules
    • Validate data rules at an ETL level, and understand rules according to use case (eg measure, validate, profile, etc)
    • Use technology to analyse data – see skills

    Data Modelling And Architecting

    • Validate the appropriate modelling and management of data artefacts according to specific use cases like:
      • Data flow and control improvements
      • Logical to physical transformations
      • Data ownership models
      • Lineage views
      • Validate the quality of source system data design
      • Contribute to the building of a data architecture body of knowledge
      • Derive value from data modelling and architecting by initiating use case-driven initiatives acting on modelling outputs

    Minimum Experience LevelRecommended

    • 5 to 7 years of data governance and data management experience, with 5 years of progressive leadership experience
    • Experience in Financial Institutions
    • Post-grad qualification in related field
    • 7 years technical data management experience
