    Financial Controller

    Job Description

    Purpose of the Job
    To manage “entity” Financial Control

    Key Performance Areas

    • Co-ordinate annual audit.
    • Manage staff of the Financial Control Section.
    • Perform any other related duties as requested.
    • Prepare current and deferred tax computations.
    • Provide technical, procedural and policy guidance.
    • Recruit and hire staff for the Financial Control Section.
    • Handle labour relations issues (e.g. disciplinary hearings).
    • Prepare annual budgets and monthly forecasts for all departments.
    • Assign, monitor and coordinate assignments (plan and organise work).
    • Determine training needs and identify training courses for direct reports.
    • Sign off all trial balance and financial accounts before these are audited.
    • Prepare annual financial statements including all relevant IFRS disclosures.
    • Evaluate performance of professional staff (conduct performance appraisals).
    • Direct budget and cost controls, financial analysis and accounting practices and reports.
    • Ensure the company is insured for the right value. Manage any insurance claims that need to be made.
    • Career development for direct reports (counselling, coaching, identify KPA’s, career planning, goal setting).
    • Analyse and interpret financial data and recommend changes to improve systems and financial performance.
    • Ensure monthly payments are made timeously. Includes ensuring payments are made to suppliers based on requisitions.
    • Ensure all month-end closure activities are carried out timeously and correctly. Includes ensuring that the correct procedures are followed, and that the correct modules are closed on the system.
    • Manage the company’s fixed assets. Ensure assets are loaded onto the financial system correctly, and that they are depreciated correctly and can be physically verified from the system to the physical location.
    • Assess financial components (e.g. revenue, expense, operating income and expenses, net income, capex and cash flows) of all Departments. Identify financial impact on overall profit, and communicate risks and recommendations to executive management for each Department.

    Educational Requirements

    • CA qualification

    Required Skills/Experience

    • Pastel experience preferable
    • 2-5 years commercial experience, including management experience

    • MS Office, spreadsheets.

    • Preparing monthly / other reports.

    • Can get messages across that have the desired effect.
    • Is able to write clearly in a number of different communication settings and styles.

    Budgeting skills:

    • Set budget, monitor budget, control expenditure, authorise expenditure, collection of income, forecasts.

    Personnel Management Skills:

    • General supervision of staff; conducting appraisals; authorising work; advising and giving guidance; training and development; career planning; consultation and counselling of staff.
