    Senior Legal Advisor

    Requirements

    • An LLB degree and admission as an Attorney or Bar Advocate (Passed Bar Examination)
    • At least 5 years’ post admission experience in a relevant legal environment
    • Proven experience within a local government environment will be an added advantage
    • Knowledge of local government legislation, policies and procedures
    • Valid driver’s licence
    • Excellent attention to detail and communication skills
    • Ability to simultaneously work on multiple tasks with minimum supervision
    • Ability to diligently work on high volumes of work under considerable pressure
    • Ability to manage and advise various stakeholders within the environment of local government

    Key Performance Areas

    • Provide high level legal direction and services to Council, Council committees, line departments and political structures;
    • Provide an effective and efficient legal compliance function by ensuring legal compliance with Constitutional obligations and the provisions of applicable National and Provincial legislation as well as by-laws and policies of the City;
    • Conduct extensive research and legal problem solving;
    • Researching all relevant legislation, case law and articles in order to provide sound and up to date legal advice and direction;
    • Draft and provide sustainable legal opinions based on analysis and findings of research;
    • Makes final interpretive decisions on legal issues in variable and unpredictable circumstances;
    • Ensures the maintenance and upkeep of all records and information;
    • Effective and efficient case management, by finalizing matters within a set turnaround time;
    • Draft and review legal documents and legal agreements;
    • Protect/promote the legal interests of the City and safeguard it against legal risk.
