    Manager, Business Improvement (MP)

    Job Advert Summary

    PURPOSE:

    • Custodian of operational excellence programme for relevant area
    • To manage the implementation of operational excellence and optimisation initiatives for relevant area
    • To ensure knowledge sharing and duplication of improvement and innovation opportunities between Business Unit areas.

    MAJOR CHALLENGES:

    • Operational excellence and cost efficiency
    • Value chain optimisation
    • Defining initiatives to achieve group Earnings Before Interest and Taxes (EBIT), cost and cash flow targets for relevant area
    • Driving a culture of improvement and innovation.

    Minimum Requirements

    QUALIFICATIONS:

    •    B Eng (Relevant) (Essential/Minimum)
    •    Management Development Programme (Essential/Minimum)
    •    Lean Six Sigma Black Belt (Recommended/Desirable or)
    •    Lean Six Sigma Green Belt (Recommended/Desirable)

    EXPERIENCE: 

    • 8-10 years Relevant job-specific experience. Successfully managed a business improvement or optimisation programme, preferable in a mining/resources environment. Business improvement- or business excellence, economical evaluations, improvement methodologies (Lean Six Sigma (LSS) and Theory of Constraints (TOC)  (Essential/Minimum)   Operational

    Duties & Responsibilities

    Best Practice and Knowledge Management

    •  Intellectual property management and protection
    • Create and manage professional networks
    • Participate in tertiary educational relationships
    • Participate in professional external forums
    • Continuously monitors exchange and preservation of information between operations and individuals to facilitate effective knowledge management
    • Stay abreast with advances in field of business improvement and innovation

    Business Performance, Operations and Continuous Improvement  

    •  Execution of the annual business plan assurance process. Responsible for pre-work and assurance preparation, mobilising and briefing the BU team, facilitating the assurance site visits, distributing the critical findings and tracking the execution of mitigation actions against these findings
    • Provide support to Business Optimisation Manager on target setting process
    • Cascade targets (Earnings Before Interest and Taxes (EBIT), cost, cash flow) down to operational- and departmental level, taking into account business and capital cycles

    Business Review Process  

    • Responsible for the operational performance review process (monthly performance review) for relevant area
    • Ensure performance review actions are captured, assigned, distributed and tracked

    Customer and Client Relationship Management  

    • Support core business by ensuring appropriate stakeholder relationships towards enhancing corporate profile
    • Manage internal and external relations, including the interface with external providers or other functions responsible to ensure that business needs are met and employees are satisfied

    Functional Excellence  

    •  Implement business optimisation functional policies, standards, guidelines, procedures, end-to-end processes, tools and templates etc.
    • Apply business optimisation functional best practices and promote sharing of best practices/knowledge
    • Drive and execute functional excellence initiatives
    • Oversee and monitor functional activities at area/cluster of responsibility
    • Effectively manage matrix reporting
    • Identify and manage critical functional risks at area/ cluster of responsibility through appropriate mitigation plans/actions

    Functional Management  

    •  Functional management: Responsible for the management of business improvement and industrial engineering functions for relevant area
    • Financial management: Prepare/manage business optimisation function’s budget (Business Units (BU’s)) - aligned with and adhering to functional budget
    • Performance management: Implement business optimisation functional strategic plan through disciplined execution processes and track implementation. Provide feedback to Business Optimisation Functional Manager. Hold staff responsible for achieving results. Remove obstacles that interfere with performance and handle performance problems
    • Continuous improvement and functional change: Identify, advocate for and lead functional improvement and change. Create a culture of continuous improvement and change agility in function
    • Engagement/communication: Communicate and engage functional employees including virtuals. Engage with operations and cross- functionally with peers. Represent the function/the Company externally as required
    • Governance: Ensure adherence to business optimisation function governance, policies and standards, statutory and legal compliance. Entrench a culture of discipline

    People Management 

    • Staffing: Select, appoint and on-board business optimisation functional staff (BU’s)
    • Performance management: Clarify roles/responsibilities and expectations. Define individual performance standards, monitor and measure performance, reward and recognise high performance. Apply consistent performance and consequence management and take prompt action against non-performance
    • Talent development: Actively manage talent through regular assessment of employees’ strengths, development needs and development progress. Provide ongoing mentoring, coaching and development feedback to employees. Manage functional talent pipeline and succession planning process. Promote a culture of continuous learning. Encourage and empower team to make decisions
    • Culture/functional climate: Embody, translate and entrench the Company culture and values in function and address behaviours that undermine values. Foster effective teamwork and unity. Manage functional climate in which diversity is appreciated, high performance thrives and where people are involved, energised, committed, motivated and recognised. Demonstrate and encourage collaboration including cross- functionally and create a culture of collaboration. Create an environment in which people are inspired to perform and a high performance culture
    • Change leadership: Provide direction, guidance and support to people having to adapt to change and keep them committed throughout. Actively support, advocate for and embrace functional/ organisational change and reinforce/role model the change. Address resistance, beliefs, mind-sets, behaviours and emotions to help people adapt to change
    • Communication/engagement: Encourage open expression of ideas/opinions and foster dialogue. Seek out different opinions. Inform people of decisions, changes and other relevant information. Proactively address conflicts and initiate difficult conversations
    • Team development: Develop an effective and high performing team including shared team purpose, principles, goals, accountability and effective Team player capabilities. Create an environment of accountability and trust

    Safe and Healthy Work Environment  

    •  Adhere to all health/safety practices and promote good housekeeping on an ongoing basis
    • Address all unsafe practices/potential hazardous situations and rectify/report to superior Comply with Safety Health and Environmental (SHE)/technical requirements
    • Wear applicable Personal Protection Equipment (PPE) at all times

    Strategy Management  

    •  Strategic alignment/planning: Communicate the Company and business optimisation strategy to subordinate functions. Reinforce the link between the Company, functional, operational goals, individual outputs, measures and rewards
    • Manage strategy implementation at BU

    • Demonstrates the following:
