    Inspector: Firearm Enforcement (Centurion)

    Requirements

    • Degree/National Diploma in Policing/Forensic Investigation and Criminal Justice/Security Management or NQF level 6 equivalent qualification coupled with 4 years or
    • more experience in law enforcement, regulatory inspection or related role 
    • 2 years’ experience in firearm handling, safety and legislation 
    • A valid driver's license with 2 years’ experience in driving and must have their reliable transport eCertificate in firearm handling and safety added advantage 
    • Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) and applicable knowledge and experience on the Job may be considered during the selection process.

    Essential criteria: 

    • Ability to work under pressure 
    • Ability to interpret pieces of legislations that manages the security sector eComprehensive understanding of the Firearms Control Act and
    • other relevant legislation 
    • Ability to assess situations, gather and analyse information, and make informed decisions 
    • Excellent verbal and written communication skills for interacting with the public, applicants, and other law enforcement agencies 
    • Ability to build and maintain professional relationships with a diverse range of stakeholders 
    • High ethical standards and the ability to
    • maintain confidentiality and impartiality in all investigations and inspections 
    • Strong problem- solving skills and the ability to handle complex and sensitive situations 
    • Computer literate (Microsoft packages)

    Key Performance Areas: 
    Inspection and Compliance: 

    • Conduct regular inspections of firearm dealers, manufacturers, shooting ranges, and private firearm owners to ensure compliance with the Firearms Control Act and other relevant legislation 
    • Verify the accuracy and completeness of firearm registers and inventories eInspect storage facilities to ensure they meet prescribed safety and security standard 
    • Conduct regular inspections of firearm dealers, shooting ranges, and individual firearm owners 
    • Verify the legality of firearm possession and ownership through documentation checks and physical inspection. 

    Investigation: 

    • Investigate incidents involving firearms, including illegal possession, misuse, and accidents 
    • Collect and analyse evidence, interview witnesses, and prepare detailed reports on findings eAssist in criminal investigations related to firearms when required

    Licensing and Permits: 

    • Review and process applications for firearm licenses, permits, and renewals 
    • Conduct background checks and assessments of applicants to
    • ensure eligibility
    • Maintain accurate records of all licenses and permits issued. 

    Audit and Compliance Checks:

    • Perform audits on firearm inventory and records maintained by firearm
    • dealers and owners 
    • Ensure proper storage, handling, and transportation of firearms 
    • Identify and address any discrepancies or violations found during audits. 
    • Reporting and Documentation: 
    • Maintain detailed and accurate records of inspections, investigations, and compliance activities 
    • Prepare and submit reports on findings, including recommendations for corrective actions 
    • Ensure proper documentation and secure storage of all records and evidence related to firearms inspections and investigations. 

    Enforcement and Legal Proceedings:

    • Enforce firearm regulations and take appropriate legal actions against violators 
    • Testify in court as required in cases involving firearms violations 
    • Coordinate with legal and judicial authorities on matters about firearm-related offences.
