    PURPOSE OF JOB 

    • Install, repair and maintain the mechanical installation, machinery and components 

    DESCRIPTION OF TASKS/RESPONSIBILITIES

    • Inspect mechanical systems, equipment and components to identify hazards, defects and the need for adjustment or repair, and to ensure compliance with OHSA ,SANAS and SABS codes.
    • Work with ladders, scaffolds and roofs to install, maintain and repair mechanical equipment and fixtures.
    • Breakdowns should be attended to as soon as possible and the repairs must be carried out in the shortest possible time to minimize production delays.
    • The fitter must always ensure that he is aware of the priority ratings of the machines and attend to the breakdown accordingly. The priority rating is dynamic and changes all the time.
    • Breakdowns must ALWAYS be completed with the highest standard of workmanship and as a permanent solution to the problem.
    • Breakdowns that are going to take more than one (1) hour to repair must be reported to the supervisor immediately.
    • Undertake maintenance and shutdown tasks with accuracy and using the highest engineering standards at all times.
    • Plan, organize and order spares from the main stores to complete any task assigned to you.
    • Ensure that his tools and toolboxes are kept in a good condition and that the number and types of tools meets the minimum standards of the department.
    • Be available at all times to work overtime, nightshift and standby duties (call-outs) when required.
    • Ensure that any job/task is completed in a time that is generally accepted as an industry standard.
    • Liaise with operators, production personnel and plant managers to ensure that repairs, maintenance and modifications to the machines are to their satisfaction.
    • Maintain all company tools in a safe and good condition. Ensure that the company tools are stored away safely and easily accessible to the rest of the department during all hours. Report damaged tools and equipment to your supervisor immediately.
    • Ensure that the workplace is neat and tidy on completion of the task. Scrap components/materials must be placed in the correct waste bins.
    • Ensure that you understand the lock-out procedure and that your colleges (all departments) adhere to the procedure without excuses. All equipment must be locked-out when any work is undertaken on the equipment.
    • The procedure regarding the handling, reporting and record keeping of job requests and Maintenance Works Orders (MWO) are clearly defined in the Works Instruction WI 7/19. This procedure is available from your supervisor and must be strictly adhered to at all times.
    • Carry out any legal instruction given by any foreman or supervisor.
    • Assume the duties of the mechanical foreman when requested or when the foreman is not available.
    • Assist the electrical department when requested or whenever problem solving is necessary.
    • Supervise/instruct/train any personnel who may be assigned to work with you. Special care and attention must be given to the training of apprentices.
    • Attend and successfully complete any course you may be sent on by the company.
    • Inform production departments on completion of the task/job.
    • Operate a forklift when required. (Must have a valid license)
    • Operate an overhead crane when required.(Must have a valid license).
    • Daily checks to be carried out, as required by the foreman, on all hydraulic and gearbox oil levels and ensure that they are at the correct operating levels. Oil leaks must be reported to the the foreman immediately.
    • Minor oil leaks must be repaired immediately that they become known.
    • Air leaks must be reported to the foreman and repaired as soon as possible.
    • Undertake small boilermaking and welding asks during repairs, maintenance and/or installations of new equipment.
    • Assist the production departments, where required, to change blades on any saw and/or guillotine. 

    AUTHORITY

    •  Authorized to stop any machine or process to prevent damage to equipment or prevent accidents and incidents from occurring (SAFETY).

     EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS

    •  Minimum NTC3 with at least one relevant subject in the mechanical field
    • Recognizable and verifiable trade test

    •  Trade test certificate
