    Director: Centre for Environmental Justice in Africa (CEJA), Department of Public Law, Faculty of Law

    RESPONSIBILITIES:

    • Develop and implement a strategic vision for the CEJA in collaboration with the Executive Committee;
    • Manage the day-to-day administration of the CEJA;
    • Develop a fundraising strategy for CEJA;
    • Raise funds for the CEJA;
    • Manage the financial administration of the CEJA;
    • Develop a budget and make projections on spending;
    • Manage relationships with donors and other funders;
    • Establish and maintain a network of UP researchers across all 9 faculties and the business school;
    • Establish and maintain a network of institutional partners, academic or thought partners and CBO and NGO partners;
    • Manage the CEJA’s support for strategic litigation and advocacy initiatives;
    • Provide direction for strategic litigation support by the CEJA, including through five-year strategic planning processes and annual updates;
    • Undertake risk assessments of all strategic decisions before committing the CEJA to particular cases of advocacy;
    • Correspond with attorneys and advocates where appropriate;     
    • Ensure written and oral submissions are provided to Parliament and other law-making bodies e.g., South African Law Reform Commission;
    • Ensure written and oral submissions are provided to international treaty bodies;
    • Liaise with government departments on environmental law and policy issues;
    • Oversee research of international and comparative law for purposes of strategic litigation and use in submissions to relevant bodies;
    • Oversee the tracking of the latest developments in environmental law, including case law and legislation;
    • Decide on themes for the CEJA to undertake research on and ensure published outputs of other staff members or consultants, where applicable;
    • Present selected lectures on environmental law at masters level in the Department of Public Law or where invited, also in other Faculties;
    • Supervise dissertation students at undergraduate and postgraduate level when so required.

    MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

    • LLM in Environmental Law, Human Rights Law or equivalent;
    • 10 Years’ experience in a similar or higher position; 
    • Proven advocacy record; 
    • Proven record in fundraising and managing donor relations;
    • Managerial/supervision experience;

    REQUIRED COMPETENCIES (SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE AND BEHAVIOURAL ATTRIBUTES):

    • Knowledge of undertaking strategic litigation and support thereof; 
    • Knowledge and experience of fundraising, including writing proposals and reports;
    • Computer proficiency;

    • Integrity;
    • Financial acumen;
    • Ability to communicate in South African indigenous languages will be an added advantage;
    • Ability to do advocacy and networking with external partners and NGOs;
    • Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing;
    • Ability to organise and present in workshops, seminars and conferences;
    • Ability to draft and present submissions to Parliament, regulatory bodies and the government in general, and international treaty bodies.

    ADDED ADVANTAGES AND PREFERENCES:

    • LLD or PhD in environmental law, human rights law or equivalent
    • Admission as an advocate or attorney will be an added advantage.
    • Experience of work in environmental law/human rights         
    • Valid driver’s license.
