    What will you do?

    • You will be working primarily within the Google Cloud Environment using a variety of the tools that Google offers from Biquery and Dataproc to Kubernettes and AI Hub. You should ideally dream in Python and speak SQL. You should not be afraid to dive into dirty data and help the team make sense of it. We are in the game of taking data and turning it into amazing stories and pretty pictures that helps the decision makers drive the business forward.

    What should you have?

    • Tertiary qualification in Computer Science, IT or Informatics preferred
    • 5+ years development experience working with Python
    • Data skills (Traditional SQL and No-SQL)
    • Large scale ETL
    • High scale Restful Services
    • Cloud experience (Google cloud platform preferred)
    • Experience with source control (Git)

    Commercial Project Specialist

    Main purpose of the role:

    • The North Advertising team is looking for a motivated and passionate self-starter to develop and drive new revenue projects for the Media24 brands. Conceptualise, coordinate, and execute all projects from beginning to end to leverage brand equity and grow additional revenue streams. 

    Key responsibilities:

    (The primary tasks, functions and deliverables of the role)

    • Contribute to the bottom line by driving revenue projects such as events and brand extensions, including advertiser funded programmes (AFP’s) for Afrikaans News North.
    • Identify business opportunities and present these to the Advertising Manager
    • Establish, develop, and maintain positive business and customer relationships
    • Prepare proposals for direct requests from clients or producers
    • Present, promote and sell sponsorships to prospective customers, including generating own ideas to achieve revenue targets
    • Negotiate and execute relevant barter agreements and media sponsorships
    • Achieve agreed upon sales targets and outcomes by identifying and generating new business opportunities
    • Update sales tools and documents, and ensure the sales team is briefed to sell opportunities to their clients
    • Work with clients to develop project goals, timelines, negotiate contracts, and monitor contract staff to ensure the project is successfully completed
    • Ensure that all AFP and other clients receive exceptional and speedy service
    • Organise, coordinate, and host events, including responsibilities such as calculating budgets, choosing locations, arranging schedules, selecting speakers and entertainment, choosing vendors, selecting menus, sourcing accommodation and arranging transportation, etc.
    • Troubleshoot any problems or issues should they arise during the course of the project
    • Network with other public relations and marketing specialists within the group, and maintain a high level of relevant industry knowledge

    Digital Editor

     Key responsibilities

    Overall, the editor will be in charge of and responsible for editorial content, the implementation of the digital content strategy, the implementation of the social media strategy, managing the daily digital news diary, and for overseeing the website and the brand’s online publishing during its AM shift. This includes the following: 

    • Initiate, drive and coordinate aggregated and original content throughout the day
    • Imagine and create a brand new digital news entity, drawing from existing print and digital content, and creating fresh, digital news and content offerings;
    • Ensure the right mix of news and content offering, from written to multimedia, to meet the expectations of existing and future audiences;
    • Manage the citypress.co.za homepage for maximum engagement as well as the daily diary with the help of the deputy digital editor;
    • Manage and lead digital editorial staff;
    • Brief reporters, subedit and revise stories as well as ensure strict adherence to deadline;
    • Collaborate and work with other news teams within the centralized structure;
    • Attend news conferences to ensure a unified flow throughout the publication;
    • Achieve readership and subscription targets;
    • The incumbent will oversee the curation of the morning newsletter On a Point of Order alongside the Deputy Digital Editor
    • Be co-responsible with the Deputy Digital Editor for business objectives.
    • Use analytics to supplement intuitive decision making

    Senior Political Reporter

    Roles and responsibilities:

    • Must cover the Presidency and all government departments
    • Must have a good grasp of South Africa’s legal/judicial set-up;
    • Must report on political developments of national importance;
    • Regularly write breaking and agenda-setting stories;
    • Guide legal, judicial and political correspondents and their coverage; 
    • Must write regular features and analysis of political trends and debates both in print and online;
    • Generate exclusive political stories and interviews for City Press on a weekly basis;
    • Initiate ideas for political investigations and analysis on a regular basis.

    Job Description

    • Establish and maintain strong network of political contacts that will set City Press apart;
    • Must be able to contribute at least three online stories during the week and two breaking and insightful stories for Sunday;
    • Must contribute multimedia elements and suggestions to enhance presentation of stories;
    • Must cover the three layers of government, local, provincial and national and identify relevant stories for City Press
    • Must also have a grasp of the policies and developments within the major opposition parties
    • To also contribute to social media reporting, online and print.
    • Must report on developments in the legal sphere;
    • Must be a well-connected, established and a leading political journalist;
    • A strong ability to break legal, judicial and political stories; 
    • Able to set the political news agenda for the week;
    • Proven ability to analyse and write critically, through thought provoking pieces;

    Minimum Requirements

    • 5 to 10 years’ experience in mainstream journalism covering politics with a strong portfolio of political coverage.
    • Relevant degree/Qualification in journalism would be an advantage
    • An inspirational leader and a team player;
    • Exceptional writing skills in English;
    • A good grasp of African political developments and trends;
    • Solid experience of digital platforms and passion for working in an online environment.  
    • Valid driver’s licence is essential.

    Publicist

    Job Requirements:

    Layout Artist

    Duties & responsibilities

    •  Design layouts as part of a creative art team, working on the main weekly publication as well as other platforms, including special interest magazines.
    •  Work closely with the editorial team to ensure that visuals support and enhance the story for a cohesive overall design
    •  Work within tight deadlines while maintaining high standards of work
    •  Conduct final checks on layouts and export layouts to print ready PDFs
    •  Assist the art director on any other aspects of the magazine layout and design, such as briefing, retouching, making PDFs and liaising with the factory
    •  Ensure publication complies visually and in design with international standards.

    Skills & competencies

    •  Tertiary qualification in graphic design
    •  At least five years’ experience in production and layout with a portfolio of relevant work
    •  Be curious about design and visual storytelling
    •  Show a keen interest in understanding the target market of the publication
    •  Proficiency in relevant computer packages and design software – InDesign knowledge is a must

    • Breedevallei Media, proud source of news and information in the Breede River Valley, offers an exciting opportunity in their Worcester office for an experienced journalist.     Key responsibilities

    • Edit or rewrite articles to ensure that the angle and approach is fresh, original and on point and that the article is well structured, accessible and easy to understand
