About this career opportunity
Working very closely with colleagues and clients, you will be accountable for interpreting the client brief and developing designs at all stages from scheme through to detail, construction monitoring, commissioning and close out. Acting freely to investigate solutions, you will explore options, work closely with external collaborators, and lead a team to develop and convey design solutions.
As well as the production of design information, a key part of role will be managing and supervising colleagues in the production and refinement of designs to ensure that we produce the highest quality product for our clients. You will be accountable to managing and monitoring resources to deliver the agreed commercial performance of your projects. During the construction and close-out stages of your projects you will manage contract administration (including financial management), site monitoring, commissioning, and close-out of project.
You will be an inquisitive and creative, solution-orientated yet collaborative, persuasive, and engaging individual who gives their all to ensure the client is happy and the solution both high-quality and practical. You will be accountable to a project director/manager for day-to-day delivery, and you will be provided with formal and informal support to develop your skills. You will liaise with other disciplines within the regional office and elsewhere within the company. You may be required to work away from your normal office from time to time and be willing and able to travel internationally to project sites.

We have an opportunity for a Senior Structural Engineer to become a permanent member of our creative and friendly Property, Science, Industry and Technology team in South Africa. You will be based in Durban and be a key part of our wider South African multidisciplinary, collaborative team. Our projects are local and global and will allow you to work and succeed in an international, multi-cultural business environment.
The role involves inter-office working, skills development and knowledge transfer between Arup colleagues across the continent and region. You will play a part in the ever-increasing digital transformation of our business, seeking new ways to increase our efficiency through automation and to offer new services to our clients through our integrated digital approach to design.

Is this role right for you?
The candidate should have sufficient experience/exposure on medium to large scale property projects where they have played a leading role as a structural engineer. They have strong technical experience in structural Engineering and a broad range of hands-on experience of different structural forms, construction materials, design stages and project sectors.
The candidate should also have experience in working within a multidisciplinary engineering team and have an appreciation for the role and interactions of all engineering services required to execute a project.

Our South Africa team is currently looking for a water focused Civil Engineer to join our dynamic team working on innovative and exciting infrastructure projects in Africa. You will work on a broad range of water focused infrastructure projects across Africa including water flood resilience, storm water management, water resources / supply, treatment, and reuse. You will be involved at all stages of the project cycle from strategic definition, conceptual design, detailed design and through implementation, including technical advisory and due diligence.

You will need to be adaptive, and passionate to learn different software and workflows, from project to project. We are seeking a candidate who is keen to engage with Arup’s knowledge base and wide network of technical experts, and who is curious to learn about aspects outside of their normal area of expertise. This role goes beyond technical tasks and requires a water engineer who will engage with unique tasks such as a lack of data, uncertainty, climate change, biodiversity loss, combined engagement and capacity building.
