    Senior Electrical Engineer/Technologist – Building Services

    About this career opportunity

    Working very closely with colleagues and clients, you will be accountable for interpreting the client brief and developing designs at all stages from scheme through to detail, construction monitoring, commissioning and close out.  Acting freely to investigate solutions, you will explore options, work closely with external collaborators, and lead a team to develop and convey design solutions.   

    As well as the production of design information, a key part of role will be managing and supervising colleagues in the production and refinement of designs to ensure that we produce the highest quality product for our clients.  You will be accountable to managing and monitoring resources to deliver the agreed commercial performance of your projects. During the construction and close-out stages of your projects you will manage contract administration (including financial management), site monitoring, commissioning, and close-out of project.

    You will be an inquisitive and creative, solution-orientated yet collaborative, persuasive, and engaging individual who gives their all to ensure the client is happy and the solution both high-quality and practical.  You will be accountable to a project director/manager for day-to-day delivery, and you will be provided with formal and informal support to develop your skills. You will liaise with other disciplines within the regional office and elsewhere within the company. You may be required to work away from your normal office from time to time and be willing and able to travel internationally to project sites.

    • Bachelor’s degree in a relevant engineering discipline.
    • Professional registration with ECSA.

    • Healthcare or Data Centre projects knowledge.

    Senior Structural Engineer - Durban

    The Opportunity:

Together we help our clients solve their most complex challenges – turning exciting ideas into tangible reality as we strive to find a better way and shape a better world.  

    We have an opportunity for a Senior Structural Engineer to become a permanent member of our creative and friendly Property, Science, Industry and Technology team in South Africa. You will be based in Durban and be a key part of our wider South African multidisciplinary, collaborative team. Our projects are local and global and will allow you to work and succeed in an international, multi-cultural business environment.

    The role involves inter-office working, skills development and knowledge transfer between Arup colleagues across the continent and region. You will play a part in the ever-increasing digital transformation of our business, seeking new ways to increase our efficiency through automation and to offer new services to our clients through our integrated digital approach to design.

    You will make an impact by:

    • Taking a leading role in the structural engineering design of projects with working as part of a multi-disciplinary team to carry out hands-on design for a variety of projects, including appropriate use of technical analysis and design software packages.
    • Contributing across multiple projects with different design teams
    • Liaising with Collaborators and Clients from inception to completion and working closely with designers of other disciplines to produce co-ordinated designs.
    • Managing the production of models, drawings, reports and specifications to budgets and deadlines Analysing, designing, specification and report writing.
    • Supervising and coordinating the work of others, including other disciplines and in-house specialists and providing technical guidance and mentoring to less experienced members of the team.
    • Contributing to business development activities, including contributing to bids.
    • Undertaking project and team administration duties including planning and monitoring the time of others

    Is this role right for you?

    The candidate should have sufficient experience/exposure on medium to large scale property projects where they have played a leading role as a structural engineer.  They have strong technical experience in structural Engineering and a broad range of hands-on experience of different structural forms, construction materials, design stages and project sectors.

    The candidate should also have experience in working within a multidisciplinary engineering team and have an appreciation for the role and interactions of all engineering services required to execute a project.

    The technical/delivery attributes below are a guide:

    • Be degree qualified and registered as a Professional Engineer with ECSA or equivalent with a minimum of 6 years of industry experience
    • Be committed to your own professional development and involved in the mentoring and development of junior staff.
    • Have a strong analytical knowledge and understanding of engineering principles, combined with practical understanding of buildings and construction and experience in approval, review, management, preparation and checking of well-presented design calculations, notes, reports and general correspondence. #
    • Be conversant with design and building codes with leading industry analysis and design software and have a good understanding of multidisciplinary requirements and how they develop into holistic and coordinated solutions.
    • Have experience of delivering within internal and external commercial targets and an aptitude to work on your own initiative and be proactive.
    • Have good people skills and be a team player and collaborating and problem solving and excellent planning and organization skills required for our fast-paced environment.
    • Demonstrate analytical, creative, and conceptual thinking with the ability to evaluate options, consequences and implications.
    • Be a clear communicator with the ability to present and explain thinking and design decisions through sketching, drawing, presentations, and in writing.
    • Have a knowledge and interest in sustainable design and enthusiast in driving a Digital agenda including automation.

    Water Engineer/Infrastructure

    Our South Africa team is currently looking for a water focused Civil Engineer to join our dynamic team working on innovative and exciting infrastructure projects in Africa. You will work on a broad range of water focused infrastructure projects across Africa including water flood resilience, storm water management, water resources / supply, treatment, and reuse.   You will be involved at all stages of the project cycle from strategic definition, conceptual design, detailed design and through implementation, including technical advisory and due diligence.

    The role involves inter-office working and assisting with knowledge transfer between Arup colleagues across the continent.  You will play a part in the ever-increasing digital transformation of our business, seeking new ways to increase our efficiency through automation and to offer new services to our clients through our integrated digital approach to design. There will be opportunities to broaden international exposure through assisting with the appraisal and delivery of water infrastructure schemes in the UK. The role involves working on a broad range of water infrastructure opportunities; some of which you may already be exposed to and other areas which may be new to you. You will need to be adaptive, and passionate to learn different software and workflows, from project to project.  We are seeking a candidate who is keen to engage with Arup’s knowledge base and wide network of technical experts, and who is curious to learn about aspects outside of their normal area of expertise.  This role goes beyond technical tasks and requires a water engineer who will engage with unique tasks such as a lack of data, uncertainty, climate change, biodiversity loss, combined engagement and capacity building.

    The technical competencies below are a guide and indicative of the wide range of competencies we will require:

    • A Civil Engineer degree. A master's in civil engineering will be advantageous.
    • A willingness to pursue and obtain professional registration within a reasonable timeframe as required by the firm. Professional registration with ECSA, or other appropriate institution will be an advantage.
    • 5 years' experience with water focus Civil Engineering.
    • Recognizable exposure working on projects in African countries.
    • Application of hydrology and hydraulic modelling principles, use of 1D/2D software.
    • Stormwater drainage network modelling and design, including sustainable drainage (SUDS) and Nature Based Solutions (NBS).
    • Autodesk suite of software including Civil 3D.
    • Sewer network design and overview of treatment options.
    • Water resources and supply.
    • Pressure network design.
    • Intergrated water management - strategic through the implementation.
    • Relevant programming/coding understanding to improve workflows /outputs.
    • Application of GIS.
    • Application of BIM.
    • Strong written communication and report writing skills.
