    Chief Officer: Project Support Officer (R608A)

    • The South African Medical Research Council’s Strategy, Project Management and Business Analysis Office (SProMBA) requires a suitably qualified Project Support Officer with experience in project management and business systems support. The duties of the advertised position include supporting the business analysis office in current and future SAMRC requirements such as new or revised systems, processes, functionality and other projects in support of the strategy office. This includes project related tasks and milestones within specified timeframes. Functional support, quality assurance, design, documentation of training material and delivery of training to users in relevant systems. This role will be responsible for overall administration tasks of the office, processing and record keeping of financial transactions and assets.

    Responsibilities:

    • Business systems support in relation to all systems and processes in the SProMBA office.
    • Management, prioritization and escalation of system issues and functional requirements
    • Assist in the development, testing, upgrades and implementation of systems.
    • Management of user access and permissions
    • Development of system training documentation and user guidelines
    • Delivery of training courses, information sessions and functional demonstrations based on documented business processes.
    • Engagement with stakeholders on systems, processes and business requirements
    • Provide administrative support and manage the day-to-day operations, projects, financial transactions and asset management for SProMBA.
    • Co-ordinate meetings, training and workshops in the office
    • Support project deliverables and milestones for multiple projects

    Core Requirements:

    • 3-year National Diploma in project management/information systems or verified equivalent of NQF5 in a related field.
    • Minimum of 5 years in projects, information systems support and training.
    • Ensure attention to detail, use initiative and be a team-player.
    • High level written, verbal communication and interpersonal skills.
    • Computer literacy skills at an intermediate to advanced level
    • Knowledge and understanding of business administration processes.
    • Experience in training staff (modules, presentations etc.)
    • Strong planning, administration, time management and problem-solving skills
    • A meticulous approach to work i.e. keen attention to detail and accuracy for working under pressure while managing competing demands / multiple projects.

    Advantageous:

    • 5 years’ experience in projects, information systems support, training and general administration.
    • Experience in the public sector
    • Knowledge of research administration and business processes
    • Aptitude and willingness to learn system functionality.

    Senior Specialist Scientist - R556B - NCDRU

    The South African MRC NCDRU’s program on ‘cancer epidemiology and prevention’ is a new research program on priority cancers, as well as their environmental, dietary, lifestyle and genetic determinants in South African and sub-Saharan African region. The program is located organizationally under the auspices of the Office of the Director, NCDRU. NCDRU is looking for a seasoned scientist to develop and maintain its cancer epidemiology and prevention research program.

    Responsibilities:

    • Leading the development and maintenance of an integrated program of research to improve the understanding, prevention, detection and control of priority cancers and their determinants.
    • Identifying funding opportunities and lead grant proposals writing to attract funding to support the research portfolio of the program.
    • Developing and maintaining a network of collaboration in research on cancer epidemiology and prevention in South Africa and Africa
    • Establishing and maintaining links with stakeholders both national and internationally, to create new opportunities and maximize the reach and impact of the research of the program
    • Leading scientific knowledge generation in the form of original and other forms of scientific articles on issues relating to cancer epidemiology and prevention
    • Presentation and national and regional conferences
    • Developing the next generation of experts in research on cancer epidemiology and prevention.

    Core Requirements:

    • PhD in epidemiology/public health and/or clinical qualification with practical experience on cancer epidemiology and prevention
    • A least 8 years research experience in a research institution or a university, ideally in the area of cancer epidemiology and prevention in the South African and African context
    • Good communication and organizational skills
    • Experience in managing people and multiple projects as principal and/or co-principal investigator
    • Ability to multi-task and work under pressure
    • Ability to lead scientific writing, demonstrated through involvement in scientific papers as first or senior author
    • Experience in grant writing as PI as successfully attracting funding for research.
    • Experience in mentoring Masters and PhD students to completion as primary or co-supervisor
    • Advanced knowledge of at least one of the following statistical packages: R, SPSS, SAS or STATA
