    Engineering Manager - Mossel Bay

    Introduction

    A vacancy exists at Life Bay View Private Hospital for an Engineering Manager reporting to the Hospital Manager. This job exists to provide leadership, technical direction and guidance to the hospital engineering function. This entails ensuring that the maintenance and operation of movable and immovable plant and equipment as well as execution of infrastructure and construction projects in hospital are carried out in an effective, safe and compliant manner that are aligned to applicable best practices and legislation.

    Critical Outputs

    • Effective management of relationships with the business and provide professional leadership, influence and two-way communication.
    • Manage the hospital engineering department such as implementation of the maintenance management strategy and best practices to maximise overall plant and equipment efficiency (OPEE) and availability and also execution of infrastructure and construction projects.
    • Manage all aspects of the team (i.e. performance, recruitment, development and retention).
    • Perform administrative functions (i.e. reviewing and writing performance reports, document management, data analysis, validating expenditures, enforcing rules, and support decisions about key engineering projects).
    • Track and report functional metrics/key performance indicators to identify and deliver on opportunities for improvement.
    • Drive strategic input and initiatives to maximise efficiencies e.g. utilities (water, electricity, and steam) cost review and plant and equipment modifications.
    • Review, audit, monitor and evaluate performance of the engineering quality system.
    • Prepare budgets and bids; drive contract negotiations and address any engineering project disputes.
    • Manage overall hospital engineering compliance to regulations such as OHS Act, construction regulations, SANS etc.
    • Investigate industry technology, evaluate benefits, conduct business case appraisal and motivate funding.
    • Experience and understanding of expansion and refurbishment projects and the subsequent outputs thereof.

    Requirements

    • National Diploma or Degree in either Mechanical or Electrical (Heavy Current) Engineering with a minimum of 5 years in operations or engineering maintenance.
    • Practical experience in the hospital environment or similar environment is essential.
    • Proven leadership and people management experience.
    • Knowledge of contracts negotiation and management, OHS Act regulation, facilities management financial, project management and engineering procurement practices.

    Registered Nurse | Theatre Qualified

    Introduction

    A vacancy exists for a Registered Nurse - Theatre Qualified, based at Life Empangeni Private Hospital, reporting to the Unit ManagerThe successful candidate will be responsible for assisting the surgical team to perform surgical procedures on patients successfully and to ensure that the patient receives optimal care in accordance with company and hospital strategic objectives.

    Critical Outputs

    Ensuring effective financial management by

    • Ensuring accurate charging by managing theatre clocking time
    • Ensuring consignment stock, equipment and prosthesis is charged according to policy
    • Managing stock by participating in regular stock taking and controlling of the consignment stock in accordance with the hospital (local) policy

    Affecting the functioning of theatre equipment and instrumentation by

    • Ensuring the correct use of theatre equipment and instrumentation by educating and supervising staff on the correct utilization of the equipment

    Providing Quality patient care by

    • Obtaining the correct information pre-operatively and visiting the patient post-operatively
    • Ensuring that the patient is comfortable and assist the doctor during the surgical procedure

    Ensuring effective people management by

    • Providing theatre specific training and assessing the competence of staff
    • Assist the Unit Manager to correctly monitor the normal and overtime hours
    • Ensure the threatre team works according to the scope of practice
    • Give feedback to the unit manager in order to assess optimal performance

    Effective SHEQ management by

    • Ensuring the use of personal protective clothing and complying with ISO requirements
    • Ensuring the disposal of medical waste in order to effectively control infection

    Effective relationships with internal/external stakeholders

    • Attend review and consultative form meetings to maintain healthy relationships with internal stakeholders
    • Maintain a healthy relationship with external stakeholders by reporting and escalating unresolved issues to the unit manager

    Requirements

    • General Nursing Degree / Diploma
    • Registration with SANC
    • Diploma in speciality if applicable
    • Relevant experience and technical skill to meet the critical outputs
    • Understanding of the private healthcare industry, its challenges and role players would be an advantage
    • Computer proficiency would be an advantage

    CSSD Assistant

    Introduction

    A vacancy exists for a CSSD Assistant, based at Life Empangeni Private Hospital, reporting to the Unit ManagerThe successful candidate will be responsible for ensuring the correct packing and sterilisation of instrument sets and linen packs for theatre and doctors’ rooms in accordance with Company infection control standards.

    Critical Outputs

    To prepare sufficient instrument sets conforming to company standards

    • To ensure the correct application of sterile indicators and autoclave for maximum steam penetration
    • To check and prepare sets for sterilization
    • To control sufficient instrument sets

    To prepare sufficient linen sets conforming to company standards

    • To conduct regular daily checks on linen levels and ensure there is sufficient linen available
    • Compile, sterilize and store linen packs and implement corrective action to problem areas

    To ensure functional, maintained equipment according to legislative requirements

    • Conduct chemical, biological and mechanical checks in accordance with manufacturers specifications
    • Document test results
    • Check and maintain heat sealing machine and clean washers in accordance with company specification
    • Ensure timeous repair of all equipment malfunctions
    • Ensure the full functioning and maintenance of the gas autoclave

    To ensure efficient utilization of non-recoverable stock items

    • Review and prepare action plan to reduce appropriately for cost effective use by theatre staff

    Requirements

    • CSSD experience and training in the private hospital setting
    • Excellent communication skills
    • Experience in packing of equipment
    • Must be able to work flexible hours
    • Knowledge of medical terminology and instruments and process around cleaning of equipment
    • Awareness of safety protocol
    • Adherence to safe standardised loading and unloading of autoclaves
