    Space Education Specialist

    Description

    Reporting to the Space Education Manager, the Space Education Specialist will be responsible for designing and delivering educational programs focused on space science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) education. This role aims to inspire and educate various audiences about space exploration, technology, and the universe. It involves creating engaging content, organising events, and collaborating with educators and scientists to promote space education to diverse audiences. It is responsible for developing, coordinating, and implementing science outreach programs and activities.

    Working conditions.

    • Flexibility to work evenings and weekends as required for events and programs.
    • The role requires travel to various locations for outreach events and programs.
    • Ability to lift and transport materials and equipment for events and activities.

    Key performance areas will include, but are not limited to:

    • Public outreach and space awareness raising.
    • Events Management.
    • Communication.
    • Collaboration and Partnerships.
    • Evaluation and Reporting.
    • People Management.

    Requirements

    • An NQF level 8 qualification in Space Science, Astronomy, Education, Science Communication, or a related field.
    • A Master’s degree is an advantage.
    • A valid driver’s license.
    • A minimum of 5 years’ experience as a trainer/ educator in a scientific space institution.
    • Demonstrated experience leading a diverse team.
    • Demonstrated experience in educational program development and delivery, particularly in space science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM).
    • Knowledge of space science concepts and the ability to communicate them effectively to diverse audiences.
    • Excellent organisational and project management skills.
    • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, both written and verbal.
    • Proficiency in using digital tools and social media for educational purposes.
    • Background in creating multimedia educational content.
    • Creative and innovative thinking with strong problem-solving skills.
    • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
    • Experience working with diverse communities and underrepresented groups in STEM.
    • Familiarity with informal education settings such as planetariums, science centres, or museums.
