    Senior Specialist SHE Process Safety (PSM)

    Short Description / Purpose of Job

    • The purpose of this position is to provide specialist Process Safety and Risk management support to Natref in Sasolburg and Durban. This position reports to the Lead Engineer - PSM & Risk, SHERQ. The position is based in Sasolburg with support of Natref’s Durban Operations, when required.

    Recruitment Description / Key Accountabilities

    • The evaluation of process operations and design through risk assessments to ensure minimization of accidents, incidents, and events that harm people, property, or the environment.
    • The facilitation of process hazard analysis/studies, auditing, process safety information sharing and operational knowledge support to line management.
    • Apply the appropriate root cause analysis techniques to process sfatey incidents d share the outcomes with  relevant stakeholders.
    • The Implementation of process safety strategy to meet SHE performance goals.
    • Serves as team member in the compilation of Sasol process safety related Specifications and Group Procedures for the Sasol Group* Provide expert guidance and assurance on technical PSM aspects
    • Provide expert guidance and assurance on technical PSM aspects to PSM Specialists and Practitioners
    • Facilitate PHA and ad hoc risk assessments using methodologies such as HAZOP, PHR, LOPA, SIL, LOC, FEI, CEI, Fault/Event Tree, Human Factors, Inherent Safer Design, Explosion modelling and Risk Ranking
    • Facilitate/participate in PSSRs, incident investigations and assist in compiling reports, lessons learned and next steps.
    • Provide assurance that the PHA information is used in operation of the other PSM elements e.g. SOPs, Emergency procedures, etc.
    • Identify the impact of potential or actual changes, assess their effects, and improve risk management using hierarchy of controls.
    • Assist operations with the technical aspects of PSM and clarify PSM standards and elements when required.
    • Advise on Safety Case technique information to support regulatory permitting and authorisations where applicable.
    • Provide input in the design, development and maintenance of the PSM system.
    • Develop and maintain plant specific PSM procedures, checklists where applicable, by interpreting Sasol and Natref standards, processes, specifications, and guidelines.
    • Conduct MHI studies where applicable, analyse MHI regulations and ensure compliance.
    • Advise on land use for operational areas based on the relevant studies.
    • Identify potential process and asset features that could escalate emergency events into major incidents.
    • Carry out PSM stand-by duties and co-ordinate external risk assessment studies if required.
    • Utilise lessons learnt to advise management on the prevention of  repeat events.
    • Evaluate the quality of previous risk studies and advise accordingly.
    • Assess quality cost effective solutions during risk assessments to ensure optimum risk design within acceptable risk parameters.
    • Utilise consequence modelling and probability analysis to develop solutions
       

    Leadership Competencies

    • Support and monitor the identification of PSCE.
    • Utilize a FER-SI tool to derive fire, explosion and toxic index.
    • Plan and meet project management objectives in technical, professional and expert areas of work.
    • Conduct audits and plant inspections to assure the effectiveness of actions taken in incident investigations, PHA, KUEs, etc.
    • Assist in preparation for 3rd party audits and insurance engineers’ visits by collecting information, organising, planning and tracking follow up.
    • Research, propose and assist in the implementation of best practice and fit for purpose solutions to meet changing business and work requirements.
    • Gather and analyse data on PHA, MHI reports, observations, audits, incidents, and advise management on high risks.
    • Assist senior managers to be better PSM leaders e.g. be visible felt leaders.
    • Keep up to date with latest developments, and develop knowledge relating to the PSM field and personal mastery in technical skills application.
    • Coordinate PSM related projects e.g. facility siting.
    • Participate in the development and maintenance of career paths (e.g. shadowing opportunities for Practitioners).

    Formal Education and Experience

    • University Bachelor's Degree with at least 10 Years Relevant Experience, ideally with a process control and process engineering background

    • Masters/PHD Degree in Engineering with at least 8 years relevant work experience, ideally with a process control and process engineering background
