    Senior Engineer - Fire Systems CSD

    Brief description

    The main purpose of this position is to lead and manage the core engineering strategy, processes, scope design and optimisation of fire systems across the entities of the South African Reserve Bank (SARB) Group, as well as enhance engineering value through appropriate technology selection, application and prudent maintenance techniques.

    Detailed description

    The successful candidate will be responsible for the following key performance areas:

    • Conceptualise and plan the technical scope of critical (built environment) projects and manage quality output (from design to testing/commissioning) according to agreed user requirement specifications or the SARB’s engineering or real estate strategy. 
    • Draft a maintenance strategy, work/engineering instructions and standard operating procedures for technical equipment to ensure proper maintenance and the optimal use of assets through the asset life cycle management model. 
    • Ensure the optimal performance of the engineering plant by applying technical and safety standards, and act as the legal authority with respect to plant engineering. 
    • Conduct preliminary research or feasibility studies for the purpose of recommending or approving designs (or modifications) to improve efficiency to building systems or engineering machinery.
    • Draw and manage contracting models that inform service level standards/objectives or service level agreements for the performance of specialist service providers.
    • Analyse the performance of equipment and measure/model overall equipment effectiveness.
    • Create output specifications and working models for full-scale engineering or inspections, which entails technical audits and condition assessments, and manage the execution thereof. 
    • Consult or engage stakeholders on the drawing of or the preparation of technical specifications, user requirement specifications and scope of work for the production and maintenance of fire-related systems/equipment. 
    • Work closely with external engineering consultants and supporting specialists on the optimisation of technology and the enhancements of system efficiencies.
    • Manage the design and installation of fire sub-systems, which include the fire protection, fire detection, sprinkler, gas suppression, related wet services, and emergency evacuation and communication (public address) systems

    QUALIFICATIONS

    To be considered for this position, candidates must be in possession of:

    • a Bachelor’s degree in Engineering (Electrical, Mechanical or Electrotechnics);
    • registration with the Engineering Council of South Africa (essential); and 
    • five years’ experience post-professional registration

    The following will be an added advantage:

    • accreditation by the Private Security Industry Regulatory Authority (PSIRA);
    • knowledge of the National Building Regulations and relevant South African National Standards (SANS);
    • knowledge of design tools/packages (e.g. AutoCAD and Revit draughting), and document management systems (e.g. AutoDesk BIM360);
    • knowledge and experience in all local fire safety codes for code-compliant fire safety designs and projects (e.g. SANS);
    • knowledge and experience in other international codes and standards to carry out rational fire designs (e.g. British Standards (BS), National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), European Standards (EN), International Fire Engineering Guidelines(IFEG));
    • knowledge of safety legislation, regulations and standards (e.g. Occupational Health and Safety Act 85 of 1993, SANS).
