    Senior Electronic Engineer

    About The Job

    The CSIR has a vacancy for a Senior Electronic Engineer in the Technology for Special Operations (TSO) impact area (IA) within the Defence and Security Cluster. The incumbent will perform research and development (R&D) and knowledge applications, including technological innovation by providing technical inputs, support and outputs for embedded and control system design. This will also include but not limited to test and integration, validation leading to the manufacturing of components, assemblies and sub-systems to be used in an airborne and landward special operations environment. This position is based in Pretoria.

    Key Responsibilities

    • Lead the research and development, test and integration, support and maintenance of embedded systems, control systems, and other client specified requirements. Ensure all contracted requirements are met;
    • Lead and ensure technical integrity in the detailed electro-mechanical, electronic/electrical/software, optical and HMI design of sub-systems.
    • Perform integration and commissioning of components and/or sub-systems with other products (i.e., Military Vehicle, UAS, etc). This may include fault-finding and corrective action implementation.
    • Mentor junior team members in areas of technical expertise;
    • Participate in proposal development for internal/external clients to source research funding;
    • Liaise with clients and other stakeholders to ensure that R&D outcomes of projects meet client needs.
    • Present, review outcomes and make recommendations to the client and other stakeholders;
    • Lead the design, development, testing and integration of concept demonstrators and quick reaction task deliverables. Tailor engineering processes to meet client requirements on cost and on schedule;
    • Generate and contribute towards science, engineering and technology (SET) activity outputs: e.g., technical reports, guidelines, peer-reviewed publications, and new technologies and methodologies;
    • Lead system/sub-system verification and validation;
    • Elicit high level requirements from client. Compile system/sub-system specifications and/or design/description documents in accordance to engineering standards.

    Qualifications, Skills And Experience

    • A Bachelor’s degree in electronic engineering with least eight years’ experience as electronic engineer, of which three years should be in project management environment;
    • An Honours or Master’s degree in the relevant field will be advantageous;
    • The following training, knowledge, and experience are required:
    • Design and development experience for embedded hardware and software system, and control systems with a proven track record;
    • Knowledge and application of Quality Management Systems;
    • System integration, functional testing, fault finding and commissioning experience;
    • Excellent working knowledge of Windows, Linux operating systems and real-time operating system environments;
    • The following training, knowledge, and experience will be advantageous:
    • Computer programming (C, C++, Python, etc.) experience;
    • Experience with engineering tools (i.e., Altium designer, Enterprise Architecture);
    • Experience with developing concept demonstrator using development boards (i.e., Arduino, Raspberry Pi, Beaglebone, etc);
    • Leading projects within the defence industry;
    • System Engineering experience, knowledge, and its application;
    • RF design and development experience.
