Permitting Manager at First Mode

First Mode is looking for a motivated and innovative Permitting Manager in our Johannesburg, South Africa Office to coordinate permitting processes for our product deployment. In this role you will develop and implement modern and innovative permitting processes to support the development of agile technologies, project design and deployment. You are driven, collaborative, and motivated to meet high standards of delivery which create high customer approval  

Position Responsibilities

• Manage the permitting process from planning to acquisition and compliance to enable product design and deployment.
• Provide direction to define optimal permitting solutions, evaluate permitting scenarios and identify opportunities and risks associated with product development and deployment.
• Build collaborative relationships with internal teams to enable the adoption of proactive and agile permitting practices that enable a streamlined and flexible permitting approach
• Collaborate with internal stakeholders to integrate technical requirements into permit planning and acquisition. 

Basic Qualifications

• An undergraduate qualification in a relevant technical discipline (environmental, permitting, legal, engineering).
• 10+ years’ experience in a permitting role.
• 5+ years of professional experience in a similar coordination role.
• A board understanding of the regulatory systems for the mining industry and the regulatory / political interface.
• Skills and experience (5+ years) in interaction with government officials are required.

Preferred Qualifications

• A postgraduate qualification (Masters/ Doctoral degree) in a relevant technical discipline (environmental, permitting, legal, engineering).
• 5+ years’ experience as a permitting manager, experience in management of permitting processes in various jurisdictions.
• 5+ years’ experience in permitting mining or energy projects with focus on permitting new technology products and projects.
• Project management techniques such as planning, scheduling, risk management, communication, and leadership.
• Experience of working in a large multinational company and international projects, involving different cultures and business environments.

Additional Requirements

• Must be willing to travel globally.
• Visits to/ work on site at customer’s operations may be required.
• Ability to communicate in English (advanced level for verbal and written)
