    Legal Advisor - Southern Suburbs (Cape)

    What you will love doing in this role

    • Drafting and review of contracts – offers to lease & lease agreements, service & supply agreements including service levels, settlement agreements, logistics & transport provider agreements, employment & independent contractor agreements, etc.  This requires collaboration with various stakeholders in the business to understand the goal of the contract, analyse the agreement, provide insights to mitigate risks & comprehend legal consequences.
    • Knowledge of applicable legislation – National Credit Act, Consumer Protection Act, Protection of Personal Information Act, Financial Advisory and Intermediary Services Act, Financial Intelligence Centre Act, Basic Conditions of Employment Act & Labour Relations Act.
    • Advising on & drafting of business policies – conduct, ethics, employment, standard operating procedures, process documents, etc. 
    • Providing support & legal advice to other departments, such as procurement, supply chain (warehouse and logistics), merchandise, and human resources. Offer strategic guidance on business aspects & ensuring full compliance with relevant regulatory standards.
    • Staying updated on the latest industry trends, regulatory updates, and legal developments relevant to a credit and insurance provider, and retailer in South Africa, Namibia, Botswana, Lesotho and Eswatini.
    • Preparing legal opinions & memorandums (with or without external legal counsel), including presenting these opinions to key business stakeholders.
    • Drafting & facilitating legal correspondence – such as letters of demand, customer service responses & regulatory body responses, etc.
    • Managing the litigation portfolio within the parameters of the legal budget.  
    • Overseeing the Intellectual Property portfolio and ensuring timeous renewals of Trademarks, Patents & registration of new Trademarks and Patents.
    • Maintaining contract register, ensuring that contracts and expiry dates are recorded & monitored in conjunction with various stakeholders. 
    • Serve as the Company Secretary, compile agendas and board packs timeously, & take minutes at executive/board level. Resolution drafting – board & shareholder. 
    • Ad hoc project work as needed by business and in response to regulatory changes & requirements.

    What you'll need to do this role

    Qualifications and Professional Responsibilities

    • LLB degree. Admitted attorney in South Africa, maintaining good standing within the legal profession.
    • 2-4 years PQE, with demonstrable practical experience in areas such as commercial contracts, commercial leases, labour/employment contracts, & legal correspondence. 
    • Display a keen analytical mindset, enabling efficient problem-solving & a thorough assessment of legal matters & problem-solving.
    • Demonstrate effective communication skills, both written & verbal, which are crucial for articulating legal concepts clearly & professionally.
