    Fire Marshall - Malelane

    Job Description

    RCL Foods is seeking a Fire Marshall to join our Sugar division based in Malelane.

    Fire and Safety Marshel is to provides an adequate fire safety span of control within RCL Malelane Mill by having a particular responsibility for a wide range of fire, safety and emergency preparation, and response functions crucial to the effective in occupational safety.

    Minimum Requirements

    • Valid Code EB Drivers’ license
    • SAMTRAC
    • MRG auditing
    • Relevant SANS knowledge 
    • 2 years’ experience fire management duties

    Duties & Responsibilities

    • The FM shall review proper identification and labelling requirements on flammable liquid and gas containers and cylinders. Confirm that the containers are properly stored in safe storage areas which are designated and identified by clearly demarcated signs and surrounded by stable barriers or fencing.
    • The FM shall observe final testing (operational flow) of the hydrants and standpipes to confirm required systems are in service for the appropriate construction phase. Confirm contractor is properly marking (bagging) any inoperative equipment.
    • Report impairments of required hydrants to management unless repair is immediately initiated.
    • The FM shall be available during fire safety inspections. Observe and confirm final tests of fire protection equipment (automatic Sprinklers, fire alarm, and other equipment noted 10400 and 10139 standards
    • Coordinate and ensure that the first aid and fire-fighting equipment are inspected
    • Coordinate and ensure that inspecting fixed fire suppressing systems
    • To ensure that the system is tested and maintained in accordance with the recommendations of this standard, that appropriate records are kept and that relevant occupants in the protected premises are aware of their roles and responsibilities in connection with the fire alarm system.
    • To ensure that necessary steps are taken to avoid situations that are detrimental to the standard of protection afforded by the system and to ensure that the level of false alarms is minimized.
    • To ensure that the control and indicating equipment is checked at least once every 24 h to confirm that there are no faults on the system.
    • To ensure that arrangements are in place for testing and maintenance of the system in accordance with the recommendations of clause 12 of the SANS 10139:2012.
    • To ensure that the system logbook (see 13.2 of the SANS 10139; 2012) is kept up to date and is available for inspection by any authorized person (e.g., representatives of enforcing authorities and property insurers).
    • To ensure that all relevant occupants of the protected premises are instructed in the proper use of the system. Care should be taken to ensure that relevant occupants are able to interpret fire, pre-alarm (see 13.1.3) and fault indications, and that they are adequately familiar with the appropriate controls, including those associated with initiation of fire alarm signals, silencing of fire alarm signals and resetting the system.
    • Coordinate and monitor testing of fire equipment’s
    • Provide management with daily , weekly and monthly fire management system report
    • Provide monthly feedback on fire management to RISKCO
    • Auditors
    • Participate in business audit that link to fire management on site
    • Address recommendations and provide proof of audit finding closure
    • Fire prevention

    When appointed, fire marshals agree to the following:

    • Promoting general fire awareness and fire safety in your workplace.
    • Familiarising yourself with the operation of fire-fighting equipment in your workplace.
    • Checking fire-fighting equipment in your workplace at least once a month to ensure it is in working order.
    • Identifying items, equipment and areas in your workplace which may be a fire hazard.
    • Reporting any un serviced or damaged fire-fighting equipment or fire hazards to your HOD/manager/supervisor for necessary action, and to your health & safety rep for inclusion in health and safety report.
    • Checking emergency escape routes on a regular basis to ensure they are not obstructed.
