Database Administrator II - Brackenfell at Shoprite Group of Companies

Job Objectives    

• To research, evaluate and recommend DBMS products: 
• Evaluate and compare strengths and weaknesses of DBMS products 
• Produce documentation to be used in solution architecture decision making 
• Rank ease of setup and management effort required for each product 
• Rank monitoring and alerting capabilities for each product 
• Determine best use cases for each product 
• Conduct system performance testing for each product 

Assist Development Teams in designing and optimising systems:

• Liaise closely with development teams gathering their requirements. 
• Propose appropriate database management system for the application. 
• Review database designs and make recommendations to address shortcomings. 
• Perform proactive monitoring and feedback to developers, highlighting queries and processes that can be improved upon. 

To ensure information security and regulatory compliance:

• Ensuring system security meets regulatory compliance 
• Manage server security remediation activities which will include conducting vulnerability scans, patching and implementing DBMS specific features 
• Will work very closely with SECURITY and APPLICATION teams. 

To carry out database administration tasks

• Perform daily health checks for databases and resolve any issues identified 
• Check OS and Database logs. 
• Ensure database backups are scheduled and completing successfully 
• Verify backups are valid by testing restore process regularly. 
• Monitor databases so that capacity constraints can be mitigated by timeous provisioning of resources.  
• Close incidents within SLA 
• Execute database changes according to change management process  
• Assist developers with any database issues  
• Do regular disaster recovery trials. 
• Profile server resource usage, optimise and tweak as necessary 
• Resolve incidents. 
• Automate maintenance tasks through appropriate scripting language. 
• Grant permission to servers and databases in conjunction with standards as per SECURITY team. 
• Implement DBMS with HIGH AVAILABILITY architecture. 

Qualifications    

• Grade 12 
• Degree/Diploma Information Systems/Technology 
• Industry Certification: AWS Associate Architect and / or AZURE FUNDAMENTALS 

Experience    

• Experience in administering one or more DBMS such as MySQL, PostgreSQL, DB2 and MongoDB.
• Experience working with services in AWS and AZURE cloud platforms 
• Proficient with some of the common developer tool sets such as Java, XML, JSON, REST, Shell, Perl and Python.

Knowledge and Skills    

• General understanding of database management concepts 
• Proficient with installing, configuring, administering, using and benchmarking DBMS such as MySQL, PostgreSQL, DB2 or MongoDB. 
• Basic familiarity with Linux operating system 
• Some experience engineering and/or administering NoSQL infrastructure 
• Proficient with one or more Apache Software Foundation Big Data & Database projects such as Cassandra, Hadoop, HBase, MongoDB 
• Proficient with some of the common developer tool sets such as Java, XML, JSON, REST, Shell, Perl
