    Associate Policy Analyst

    • The main purpose of this position is to assist in the development of regulatory frameworks and to conduct financial sector prudential policy-related research and analysis to determine the impact of regulatory and policy matters and to monitor and influence the policy positions of international financial sector standard-setting bodies as well as local policy matters.

    Detailed Description
    The successful candidate will be responsible for the following key performance areas:

    • Assist in the research for, and drafting of, impact assessments.
    • Assist in conducting research based on international best practice and practices in other jurisdictions that have similar market conditions to South Africa in order to better inform the development of a robust regulatory framework for South Africa.
    • Participate in industry engagement sessions as well as engagements with other financial sector regulators and internal stakeholders in the development of regulatory frameworks for the Prudential Authority (PA) at the South African Reserve Bank (SARB).
    • Assist in the development of regulatory frameworks for the PA by working closely with seniors in the Policy Division.
    • Provide secretariat support in the governance structures within the PA.
    • Provide input into areas of policy development for the PA.
    • Work on financial market infrastructures (although not only).

    Job Requirements
    To be considered for this position, candidates must be in possession of:

    • a Bachelor’s degree (NQF 7) in Econometrics, Economics, Finance or Statistics, or an equivalent qualification; and
    • a minimum of 2–5 years of working experience in conducting research, drafting regulatory instruments and related documents, and conducting analysis in relevant fields.

    The following would be an added advantage:

    • practical experience in conducting and publishing economic and/or socio-economic research and impact assessments;
    • practical experience in the banking, insurance and/or financial markets regulatory environment; and/or
    • practical experience in conducting research, drafting regulatory instruments and related documents and conducting analysis in the above-mentioned sector(s).

    Additional requirements include:

    • competence in conducting impact assessments;
    • an understanding of developments regarding recent financial sector reforms;
    • an understanding of the prudential regulation, supervision and legislation impacting on the PA;
    • a basic understanding of international regulatory standards impacting on the PA/ SARB;
    • competence in the use of Microsoft Office software packages;
    • being a self-starter;
    • being able to function independently and proactively;
    • excellent verbal and written communication skills;
    • the ability to work well under pressure; and
    • own reliable transport (as the position might require travelling outside of Pretoria).
