    Assistant Technical Officer

    Duties/Pligte        
    Providing technical support for undergraduate practicals:

    • Planning and preparing undergraduate practicals;
    • Maintaining and preparing fungal and bacterial cultures for practicals;
    • Providing technical support during practicals;
    • Planning and setting up practical tests and examinations;
    • Assisting with marking practical tests and exams.

    Providing technical support for research:

    • Providing technical support to personnel and postgraduate students;
    • Training postgraduates on the use of specific laboratory equipment.
    • Maintenance of the Department's culture collection:
    • Preparing and appropriately storing cultures for inclusion in the collection;
    • Managing the database of the Department's culture collection.

    Administrative responsibilities:

    • Performing all administration pertaining to orders for materials/equipment required for undergraduate practicals and research projects;
    • Managing the Department's chemical store;
    • Servicing and maintaining all laboratory equipment.

    Job Requirements/Pos Vereistes        

    • BScAgric (with a major in Plant Pathology), OR a BSc (Hons) degree in Plant Pathology;
    • Knowledge and experience of procedures and techniques used in a Plant Pathology laboratory;
    • Experience in the isolation, pure culturing, and storage of fungi and/or bacteria;
    • Demonstrated computer literacy in MS Office, such as Excel and Word;
    • Good communication and organisational skills.

    Recommendation/Aanbeveling        

    • Experience in managing and demonstrating undergraduate practicals;
    • Experience in molecular techniques used in Plant Pathology laboratories.
