    F45 Furnace Operator

    Description

    PURPOSE OF THE JOB:

    • To safely and effectively operate the furnace and its auxiliary equipment in accordance with the relevant Standards and Procedures.

    SAFETY, HEALTH, ENVIRONMENT, RISK, QUALITY AND COMMUNITY:

    • Comply with SHEQ Ensure requirements (SHEQ Toolbox)
    • Manage and ensure that health and safety standards are adhered to and maintained.

    CUSTOMERS:

    • Ensure customer satisfaction.

    BUSINESS PROCESSES: 

    Production:

    • Load/rabble/stoke the furnace to obtain the desired operating conditions.
    • Load electrode paste in order to form the Soderberg electrodes.
    • Monitor and control the proportions of raw materials required for the smelting process.
    • Monitor and control the paste level to compensate for electrode consumption.
    • Monitor and control the slipping of electrodes to maintain electrode lengths and to effect proper baking.
    • Prepare the furnace for maintenance.
    • Inspect the furnace and auxiliary systems and action non-conformances.
    • Monitor and control the gas cleaning system to minimise pollution.
    • Monitor and control electrical operation of the furnace to smelt the burden efficiently.
    • Monitor and control the furnace cooling system.
    • Monitor and control the Effluent Treatment Plant (ETP)
    • Operate the preheating kiln.
    • Remove air-borne dust by means of a bag filter.
    • Monitor and control the operation in terms of:
    • Electrode management
    • Metallurgical control
    • Taphole and Post-taphole management
    • Lining Management
    • Raw materials management
    • Monitor and control all additional auxiliary processes i.e., Gas plant operations, Preheating operations & cooling systems.

    Maintenance:

    • Create notifications for maintenance work.
    • Planned shutdown execution.

    Feedback & Reporting:

    • Report equipment defects/deviations
    • Production management system updates
    • Shift inspections and -feedback
    • Shift handover process
    • Update the Furnace log sheets and the MES system.

    Analysing:

    • Sample Raw Materials and analyse moisture content.

    To continuously improve the Asset Capability Assurance process in a safe manner, through Root Cause Failure Analysis on high frequency and high-cost breakdowns and analysing maintenance performance.

    Analyse alternative solutions and recommend best solution/s based on:

    • HSEC impact
    • Cost – risk – benefit analysis on key equipment performance parameters
    • Cost benefit to the organisation
    • Recommend best solutions to problems through the change management process
    • Record actions arising from RCA
    • Monitor recurring failures related to implemented RCA's (KPI until close out)
    • Track Condition Monitoring (CM) results
    • Analyse equipment failure history
    • Log equipment problems identified for further action
    • Develop a list of clear problem statements and business cases for problems requiring RCA
    • Monitor and share Company-wide similarities / learning opportunities by using the Intranet Sites and SAP History
    • Monitor and advertise latest maintenance and technology developments
    • Develop, maintain and monitor adherence to maintenance standards and specifications

     Work Analysis: 

    • Ensure the latest techniques are being applied with respect to NDT and condition monitoring
    • Advise in building reliability and maintainability in the design of new or modified equipment
    • Ensure sustained FLAC improvements

    Contractor Management:

    • Develop detailed scope of work for defined scope jobs

     Rotables Management:

    • Maintain Scope of Work data base (Specifications, Quality Plan, Witness points)

    General:

    • Approve and authorise workflow
    • Perform standby
    • Work overtime as and when required

    Requirements

    MINIMUM QUALIFICATION AND EXPERIENCE
