    Developer

    What will you do?

    • The Core Insurance Platform team in Santam BITS (Business Information Technology Services) is looking for a Developer, who will be based in Bellville.

    JOB DESCRIPTION
    The incumbent will be responsible for development, testing, maintaining and supporting software that meets business requirements on the Policy Administration System.  

    PRINCIPLE ACCOUNTABILITIES
    •    Adheres to defined software development lifecycles and best practice (including code standards, code reviews, source control, etc.)
    •    Configure and develop screens and applications that meet business requirements (UI’s, business logic, rules, process flow, etc.)
    •    Build integration / web services 
    •    Create XML payloads for integration between systems
    •    Create test data and unit tests to ensure developed software works according to business requirement, design and specification
    •    Considers non-functional requirements during software development (eg. performance, load, response, etc.)
    •    Prepare and produce releases of software components
    •    Support and maintain developed applications and services

    Generic Functions
    •    Contributes and collaborates with team members across the SDLC from business analysis, design, development and testing in Agile / self-managed team environment
    •    Identification of potential risks / issues and give input into risk plan
    •    Provide support to other members of the Development Team and members of the Project Management team as required

    Quality Assurance
    •    Unit and functional testing of developed software to ensure it meets quality standards
    •    Participate in code reviews and technical issue resolution meetings
     

    What will make you successful in this role?
    QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE
    •    Relevant Tertiary IT qualification and/or qualification through experience 
    •    Minimum of 3 years’ IT development experience across the systems development lifecycle 
    •    Solid experience in :
        Java 8, J2EE 
        XML
        Object oriented development
        Web application development
        Web services
    •    Experience or at least familiarity with SQL

    KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS
    •    Knowledge of SOLID principles / Design Patterns and their use
    •    Working knowledge of the Atlassian Suite of products (e.g. Bamboo, JIRA, Confluence) would be advantageous
    •    Knowledge of Agile methods, e.g. Kanban, SCRUM 
    •    Knowledge of Groovy advantageous
    •    Knowledge of the short term insurance industry is advantageous 
    •    Working effectively as a team member sharing responsibility, providing support and maintaining communication
    •    Identifying, resolving or escalating risks, issues, dependencies, etc. 
    •    Must be able to work in a highly pressurised and dynamic environment

    Junior Risk Surveyor

    What will you do?
    This career opportunity is available at Santam Commercial Underwriting, Survey Department for a Junior Surveyor to be based in Gauteng, Johannesburg.

    The Risk Surveyor is tasked with assessing risk while applying technical knowledge. Surveyors conduct detailed risk assessments on the risk, as well as provide an in-depth view to underwriters assisting them to underwrite the risk appropriately, more specifically:
    Conducting desktop and physical surveys under the guidance of the Head surveyor.

    What will make you successful in this role?

    Survey delivery requirements:

    • Conduct surveys within the required SLA
    • Achieve the agreed productivity levels
    • Provide feedback on all queries received under the guidance of the Head surveyor
    • Provide the appropriate advice to clients, Brokers and internal staff as required under the guidance of the head surveyor
    • Understanding all the legislative requirements/Bylaws
    • Understanding the area of operations and hazards (Geographical areas and risks associated) (Process in respect of production and the function and safety of the machinery)
    • Interact with various stakeholders (distribution, operations, underwriting and intermediaries) to ensure delivery of our world class surveying competency under the guidance of the Head Surveyor

    Stakeholders:

    • Under the direction of the head surveyor perform the following:
    • Engage with internal and external stake holders (Broker Distribution, Operations etc.) to get buy-in and understanding of our need to survey risks and ensure effective execution of survey processes.
    • Provide surveying guidance and support to all Santam Group companies including MiWay, SEM, Namibia and Specialist business as required.
    • Engage with external stakeholders (brokers) to educate/ inform, where relevant, and explain survey processes or risk reduction requirements

     

    Qualifications and Experience

    • Risk surveying or related experience
    • Matric and ideally Fire Service Qualification, Technical Engineering Degree or Diploma, or relevant qualification, Minimum NQF level 4 
    • Valid driver’s licence                                                                                                  
    • Computer literate on Excel, Word, Presentations, etc.  
    • Competency at previous level and proven competence at risk surveying, with experience in retention class and exposure stipulated above.                                                                                            
    • FPA advanced courses, risk prevention strategies will be an advantage
    • Technical training for related risks – High Value Clients, high hazard risks, thatch, will be an advantage.
