    • The University of the Western Cape (UWC) enjoys national and international acclaim for its continuing contribution to democratic change in South Africa, for making quality education accessible to all South Africans and developing centres of excellence of national importance.     • The Department of Biodiversity and Conservation Biology is located within the Faculty of Natural Sciences. It is a dynamic department with strong research foci on Marine Biology, African Biodiversity, Ecology, Behavioural Ecology and Systematics. The department provides undergraduate teaching broadly focused on themes within Botany and Zoology, and offers service courses in Life Science, as well as Plant and Animal Diversity, to several other Faculties within the University.


    The successful candidate will be responsible for the following key responsibility areas:

    • Procurement and financial management
    • Managing laboratory equipment and stores, including collection of biological specimens
    • Inventory control
    • Preparation for and/or delivery of, and cleaning up after, undergraduate practical classes
    • Administration of student marks

    Minimum Requirements

    • BSc degree in Botany and /or Zoology.
    • Two years relevant laboratory experience
    • A valid driver’s license

    Required Competencies:

    • Good oral and written communication skills.
    • Good interpersonal skills
    • Planning and organisational skills
    • Computer literacy in MS Office and e-learning skills (i.e. working on online teaching platforms)

    Added advantage and preferences:

    • Experience of presenting practicals in biology and working in a tertiary education environment

    Senior Lecturer/ Lecturer

    • The Department of Biodiversity and Conservation Biology is located within the Faculty of Natural Sciences.     • The department seeks to appoint a Senior Lecturer/Lecturer. This is an opportunity for a highly motivated, dynamic individual to join the department and initiate a research programme in Conservation Biology

    The successful candidate will be responsible for the following key responsibility areas:

    • Facilitate learning and teaching at the undergraduate and postgraduate level
    • Develop learning and teaching materials – e.g. online content, course readers, tutorial worksheets, assignments, assessments etc.
    • Develop and make use of e-teaching methods.
    • Actively participate in curriculum development and assessment.
    • Conduct research and supervise postgraduate students.
    • Develop and lead an internationally competitive, externally funded research programme (in the case of Lecturer this will be a future expectation).
    • Publish research results in peer-reviewed, accredited journals relevant to the broader research field.
    • Attend local and international conferences.
    • Deliver services at departmental level commensurate with experience, e.g. university committees, and manage academic administration.
    • Contribute to community engagement and outreach.

    Minimum Requirements
     Requirements for Senior Lecturer:

    • Ph.D. in Conservation Biology or related discipline.
    • Proven record of undergraduate and postgraduate teaching at a tertiary institution in the relevant field.
    • A record of active research and research dissemination, (by publications in national and international peer - reviewed, accredited journals and conference attendance.
    • Proven record of securing research funding from external sources.
    • Demonstrate experience of successful postgraduate supervision especially at Master's level.

    Requirements for Lecturer level:

    • M.Sc. in Conservation Biology or related discipline.
    • Proven record of undergraduate teaching at a tertiary institution in the relevant field commensurate with level of appointment.
    • Record of research or participation in ongoing research.

    Required Competencies:

    • Proven verbal and written communication skills in English.
    • Good interpersonal skills.
    • Time management, planning and organisational skills.
    • Computer literacy and e-learning skills (i.e. working on online teaching platforms).

    Added advantage and preferences: 

    • Working towards completing a Ph.D. (Lecturer level).
    • Record of publications or other relevant outputs (Lecturer level).
    • Experience in departmental academic governance and curriculum development (Senior Lecturer level).
    • Record of teaching large undergraduate classes (Senior lecturer level).
    • Prior experience in the practice of conservation, e.g. implementation of strategies or policies (Senior Lecturer level).
    • Evidence of active engagement with conservation management or related activities (Lecturer level).

    Associate Professor: Sedimentology and Petroleum Geosciences

    Associate Professor

    Role Clarification & Key Performance Areas

    • The School of Pharmacy at the University of the Western Cape has a strong focus on patient and service orientated education, building on a sound scientific base and active research. The School intends to appoint an experienced academic pharmacist or clinician with pharmacology expertise to complement and enhance both teaching and research expertise in the Pharmacology and Clinical Pharmacy discipline.
