    Senior Lecturer (P001595)

    PURPOSE OF THE POSITION

    To fill a vacant position in the History in Education Subject group to ensure quality teaching and learning, to strengthen the Subject Group’s research profile, to mentor junior academic staff, and to expand community engagement.

    JOB DESCRIPTION

    KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

    Teaching and Learning

    • Partaking in lecturing classes at post and undergraduate levels in History in Education.
    • Managing teaching and learning processes for the distance as well as on-campus mode of delivery.
    • Publish articles and book chapters, as well as presenting papers at conferences.
    • Programme and curriculum development of new under and postgraduate level degrees, diplomas, and certificates, as well as short learning programs in History in Education.
    • Knowledge and competence in integrating ICT platforms in teaching and learning.

    Research

    • Involvement with and/or more teaching or research activities at a community level and community engagement in projects and service learning.
    • Service the broader higher education community environment with clear evidence on a national and international level.

    Community Engagement

    • Involvement in community engagement or implementation of expertise.

    Minimum requirements

    • A PhD (NQF level 10) in History Education, Education (Curriculum Studies in History Education) or History with a PGCE.
    • A minimum of five (5) years’ experience in primary, secondary or tertiary teaching of History in Education (if tertiary, must be in a faculty of education).
    • Two (2) publications in accredited journals or book chapter on History in Education.
    • Experience and a track record of supervising one (1) Master’s student and involvement in PhD supervision in History in Education.

    ADDED ADVANTAGE:

    • Registered with SASHT.
    • A membership accreditation with any other History Education-related professional body.

    FUNCTIONAL / TECHNICAL COMPETENCIES (KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS)

    • Demonstration of initiative and academic leadership that contributes to the realisation of the strategic plan of the Faculty of Education.
    • Strong Teaching and Learning Portfolio with the following criteria:
    • effective participation in teaching;
    • design and implementation of learning environments (face-to-face and blended);
    • use of LMS/online platforms teaching-learning technologies;
    • effective assessment practices;
    • reflection on student feedback (quantitative and qualitative);
    • reflection and peer evaluation on the depth of subject knowledge;
    • satisfactory student success rate (throughput);
    • conference and workshop attendance in the relevant discipline and teaching and learning, participation in excellence awards of Teaching and Learning.

    KEY BEHAVIOURAL COMPETENCIES:

    • Excellent communication skills (verbal and written) Analytical and problem-solving skills.
    • Effective time-management skills.
    • Computer literacy (MS Office, knowledgeable about cloud storage) Experience in teaching and learning material development.
    • Competent in the use of a variety of teaching, learning, and assessment methodologies.
