Network Engineer at Durban University of Technology

Minimum Requirements:

• NQF Level 6 qualification in Information Technology/Computer Science/Electronic Engineering
• 3 – 5years’ experience in switching, security, and cabling
• Understanding and application of network infrastructure, hardware and peripherals
• Knowledge and understanding of application transport and network protocols
• Network security and risks

Summary of Duties (but not limited to):

• Maintaining and administering computer networks and related computing environments including systems software, applications software, hardware, and configurations.
• Performing disaster recovery operations and data backups when required.
• Protecting data, software, and hardware by coordinating, planning, and implementing network security measures.
• Troubleshooting, diagnosing, and resolving hardware, software, and other network and system problems.
• Replacing faulty network hardware components when required.
• Maintaining, configuring, and monitoring virus protection software and email applications.
• Monitoring network performance to determine if adjustments need to be made.
• Conferring with network users about solving existing system problems.
• Operating master consoles to monitor the performance of networks and computer systems.
• Coordinating computer network access and use.
• Monitor the network to determine the network performance statistics
• Analyse the network statistics to determine the Key Performance Indicators
• Determine deviances in performance and congestion in the network
• Identify the cause of the deviances and congestion
• Reconfigure the network in accordance with procedures to ensure that the deviances and congestion are eradicated
• Receive and analyse a request to determine the nature and extent of the support to be provided
• Test the solution to ensure that the diagnosed problem is resolved
• Submit the resolution document to the document management system for future reference purposes
• The availability of the database is verified and ensured
• The user is created/modified in accordance with the request
• Determine the required administration actions in accordance with the schedule/request
• Ensure that the necessary change requests are authorised in accordance with procedures
• Escalate administration actions to the relevant role players where required and monitor to ensure completion within allocated time frames
• Test the administration actions to ensure functionality
• Document administration actions for future reference purposes.
