    Junior Scientist: Minerals and Energy (Geophysics)

    Overall Job Purpose : 

    To undertake limited integrated geosciences directly linked to developing/integrating geoscience datasets that will respond to South Africa’s national development imperatives. Furthermore, to play a leading role in the development of such geoscience datasets, especially focussed on geophysical datasets.

    KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

    • Undertake various geoscience research activities, especially focused on fundamental geophysics and minerals and energy development.
    • Compile integrated reports, maps, and databases on a wide variety of geophysical research themes.
    • Report, publish and present on key findings of geoscience/geophysical research undertaken.
    • Advise on the findings of geoscience/geophysical research, including toward key policy and regulatory framework, particularly in support of mineral and energy development.
    • Advise, develop, and assist in guiding the procurement of key geophysical equipment and support.
    • Participate in training, development and capitalisation of key geophysical skills and knowledge.
    • Undertake field reconnaissance and data gathering exercises, particularly in support of fundamental geophysics and minerals and energy themes.
    • Undertake additional fundamental geoscience research in support of the Council for Geoscience’s mandate.

    • Able to contribute toward the planning and organising of targeted field work and assist in project coordination, especially linked to the deployment of geophysical surveys.

    • Able to operate with clear communication, conflict management and the capability of building professional relationships.
    • Affinity toward training and development.
    • Affinity toward building a knowledge and understanding of geodynamics, regional orogenic-tectono-metamorphic processes and the applications and collection of geoscience data, especially regarding how geophysical data and information may contribute therein.
    • Professional and scientific writing and communication skills.
    • Computer literacy and the ability to work within a geographic database environment.
    • Affinity toward gaining knowledge and understanding of various geological processes.
    • Ability to work within organisational policies and procedures.
    • Have an affinity toward create, innovative thinking with a significant dedication toward quality management and control.
    • Affinity toward maintaining the highest level of safety and health management.

    KNOWLEDGE, EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

    • BSc Honours (Geology/Geochemistry/Geophysics).
    • Experience in fundamental geology, geological mapping, remote sensing, economic geology, mineral resource estimation, knowledge of various mineral reporting standards and greenfield/brownfield exploration geology, will be an added advantage.
    • Demonstratable experience with geophysics data collection, QA/QC, and interpretation would be an added benefit.
    • Candidate Natural Scientist (Cand.Sci.Nat.) or eligibility for registration with SACNASP.
    • Driver’s licence, code 8.
