    Head: Academic

    Job Purpose

    • To head up and manage the academic department, develop, workforce planning and implementation (which includes the hiring of talent for recruitment and related administration) and to own the quality assurance of Academic Operations and systems for every academic on campus.  To implement overarching Teaching & Learning strategies and interventions, corrective action for at risk students and to triangulate with Student Wellness and Library Services in the interest of overall student wellness. 

    Duties & Responsibilities

    • Managing the operational efficiency of the academic team and overseeing the student support function
    • Manage and control Lecturer and Academic budgets
    • Control of all recruitment support documentation (P15 and P2)
    • Reference checks and document management
    • Cross-check Independent Contractor claims and sign off against tracker ensuring correlation between claims submissions and hours lectured
    • Managing timesheets and payroll queries
    • Orchestrate on-campus graduation processes and the tracking of all related documentation
    • Manage communication with all stakeholders regarding changes to timetables, materials, assessments and general updates
    • Own and control the quality assurance of all Academic Operations and support systems for every academic on campus
    • Assist Programme Managers and Programme Coordinators in crafting and implementing development plans
    • Drive results analysis and Peer Review consultations
    • Monitor the delivery of workshops, forum agendas and teaching portfolio compliance, policy compliance and awareness as well as implementation
    • Develop and deliver policy awareness workshops
    • Timetable management and allocation of venues in accordance with lecturer availability and module-specific requirements
    • Collaboration with Programme Managers and Programme Coordinators regarding academic operations in support of sound Teaching & Learning delivery and student experience
    • Implement strategies, interventions and remedial action for at risk students
    • Collaborate with Student Wellness and Library Services in the interest of overall student wellness
    • Loading and updating of timetables and assessment marks on SAM
    • Manage and release CASS marks
    • Ensure timely distribution of academic reports
    • Implement and ensure adherence to policies
    • Solicit feedback from students and lecturers regarding material
    • Manage the implementation of structured class visits and Peer Review consultations
    • Manage registration and roll-over processes
    • Assist in the recruitment of Teaching & Learning staff, Programme Managers and Programme Coordinators
    • Contract lecturers in line with agreed timetables
    • Include Heads of School in final interviews with shortlisted candidates
    • A solid understanding of academic policies and processes
    • Incremental experience in Programme Coordinator and/or Programme Manager roles an advantage
    • Solid understanding of the South African Further Education and Higher Education environment and regulatory framework
    • Teaching and Learning theory
    • Assessment methods and processes
    • Teaching and Learning interventions
    • Desired Experience & Qualification

    Education:

    • Master’s degree recommended (Master’s in Business Management with PGCE or Master’s in Education)
    • Post Graduate Certificate in Higher Education or equivalent

    Experience:

    • 3- 5 years Head of Department experience
    • 3 - 5 years of managing in a Tertiary education setting experience
