    Software Development Engineer

    Amazon Development Centre South Africa is looking for passionate software developers to join us and help to solve a challenging set of problems in the Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (EC2) space.
    This vacancy is for the EC2 Placement team which is responsible for optimally placing instances on the EC2 launch-path. This problem-space is particularly interesting, as it requires us to build systems which solve multi-axis optimization problems in computationally efficient and safe ways. Given EC2's scale, there are wide-ranging and sizeable up-sides our service enhancements.

    Basic Qualifications

    • 2+ years of industry experience in a software development environment, including internships
    • Experience in any of Java, Scala, Ruby, Perl, C/C++ or C#
    • Expertise in delivering high-quality, innovative applications
    • Strong customer focus
    • Strong computer science fundamentals
    • Strong analytical skills with excellent problem solving abilities

    Preferred Qualifications

    • BS/MS/PhD in computer science or equivalent

    Cloud Support Associate - Databases

    We are seeking Support Engineers with a specialty in database technologies.
    Basic Qualifications

    • Strong Linux system administrator skills
    • Strong skills in one or more of following:
    • MS-SQL
    • MySQL
    • Oracle
    • Db performance tuning and troubleshooting
    • Experienced setting up monitoring / alarming for production DB environments
    • Some experience with NoSQL technologies like DynamoDB , Redis, MongoDB, Cassandra or Riak
    • ETL experience in managing data workflow jobs
    • Experienced with Linux system monitoring and analysis
    • Good understanding of distributed computing environments
    • Technology-related Bachelor’s degree or equivalent work experience
    • Excellent oral and written communication skills

    DESCRIPTION

    We are seeking talented engineers, well versed in DevOps technologies, automation, continuous integration and configuration management, who are not constrained by how “things are usually done”.
    On a typical day, Cloud Support Engineers might deep dive to root cause a customer issue, investigate why a metric is trending the wrong way or a deployment failing, consult with the top engineers at Amazon, or discuss creative new approaches to automate operational issues.

    • Excellent oral and written communication skills

    • Ability to work a staggered week, either Sun-Thu or Tue-Sat (no on-call)
