    Risk Officer

    • We’re on the lookout for a Risk Officer to facilitate the implementation and management of internationally acceptable risk control standards aimed at reducing the company’s exposure to undesired risks which lead to financial loss through personal injury, occupational illness, machinery breakdown, hazardous chemical incidents and environmental impacts.

    As a Risk Officer, you will be responsible for:

    Implement and manage the RPN Safety Strategy across the business units.

    • Manage all deviations on the Isometrix system including CDC for KZN and support Mpumalanga.
    • Collect and collate monthly RPN safety statistics and capture into Isometrix.
    • Manage annual budget allocated to section
    • Conduct data analysis of safety statistics to identify lead indicators, trends and adjust the safety programme.
    • Conduct various internal and external audits (contractor audits, Supplier or Vendor audit, Safety & Compliance audit).
    • Prepare information and statistics for interactions with both internal and external auditors typically (Environmental Dept, FSC, KPMG).
    • Provide technical advice to Management, Engineering, Contractors and Employees across RPN to ensure compliance with the OHS Act, Construction Regulations, SANS codes, policies and other legislation.
    • Conduct informal checks on procedures, work instructions and ensure that the units adhere to the correct procedures for issuing Permits to Work and completing Planned Job Observations.
    • Review all risks and implement plans to eliminate/reduce/mitigate risks relating to forestry, research planning and nursery projects.
    • Conduct Risk assessments and update risk matrix and provide support to the other RPN business units.
    • Manage contractor processes including Contractor SHE file approval, pre-entry audit, assisting contractors in complying with OHSA and Sappi's standards and acting as company representative for signing of OHS Section 37 agreements.

    What are we looking for?

    • Grade 12 or NQF 4 equivalent.
    • NQF Level 6 in Safety Management.
    • 3 years’ experience in a Forestry/Production/Industry Environment.
    • NQF Level 7 in Safety Management would be advantageous.
    • Knowledge of NOSA Systems.
    • Isometrix literacy – specifically Deviation Management (Advantageous).
    • Driver’s license.

    Principal Research Officer

    • We’re on the lookout for an experienced Principal Research Officer – Land Management to direct research projects, identify research priorities, design, conduct & report on specified scientific experiments/projects in the Land Management Program in order to develop new, or refine existing; BOP’s, models and tools that aims to improve value addition to Sappi from the growing of wood fibre supplied to our mills.

    As a Principal Research Officer, you will be responsible for:

    • Act on or initiate activities, identify opportunities and be proactive in putting forward ideas and solutions.
    • Also need to be able to work well as a confident team member.
    • Need to gather information, systematically implement trials and conduct analyses to establish facts and principles with the aim of problem solving.
    • Work within budget constraints in implementing research activities.
    • Acquire and implement required scientific and analytical skills and knowledge of appropriate field (e.g. statistical skills, software requirements, principles and approaches).
    • Cultivate tight interaction and relationships with relevant tertiary institutions or other relevant facilities / role players.
    • Stay abreast of current research methodology, continue to learn and develop the competencies or new skills required for the current/future roles.
    • Assist in providing guidance and direction to enhance delivery from the specialist field.
    • Effective time and resource management to ensure work is completed efficiently.
    • Ensure effective and safe work environment for sub-ordinates.

    What are we looking for?

     

    • MSc or MTech in a relevant science (Forestry, Genetics, Horticulture, Botany, Plant Pathology, Plant Breeding).
    • A PhD Degree will be a major advantage.
    • Minimum of 5 years’ experience in research would be beneficial.
    • Driver’s licence.
