    Lecturer / Senior Lecturer (Two Positions) - Department of Mathematics and Applied Mathematics - Faculty of Natural and Agricultural Sciences

    RESPONSIBILITIES:
    The incumbent will be responsible for:

    • Lecturing at undergraduate and postgraduate level on the Hatfield, Groenkloof and/or Mamelodi Campuses;
    • Conducting research in any field of Mathematics or Applied Mathematics that leads to publication in reputable peer-reviewed journals;
    • Supervising postgraduate students;
    • Participating in departmental administration;
    • Participating in community engagement.

    MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
    Lecturer:

    • A PhD-degree in Mathematics and/or Applied Mathematics (or a PhD to be completed by the time of the interviews);
    • Some teaching experience in a tertiary environment.

    Senior Lecturer (Same as for Lecturer, plus):

    • Substantial teaching experience at undergraduate and/or postgraduate levels;
    • Potential to be established as an independent researcher in the near future based on a recent body of work.

    ADDED ADVANTAGES AND PREFERENCES:
    Lecturer:

    • Research experience based on a recent body of work beyond the PhD thesis;
    • Substantial teaching experience in a tertiary environment;
    • Preference will be given to candidates with strong interest in applied and numerical analysis, ordinary and partial differential equations, dynamical systems, or mathematical modelling.

    Senior Lecturer:

    • Evidence of excellence in teaching at undergraduate and/or postgraduate levels;
    • Experience in the supervision of postgraduate students;
    • Established as an independent researcher based on a recent body of work;

    Lecturer / Senior Lecturer (One Post) - Department of Statistics - Faculty of Natural and Agricultural Sciences

    BACKGROUND:

    The Department of Statistics at the University of Pretoria offers programs in Statistics to undergraduate and postgraduate students, mainly in two faculties, namely the Faculty of Natural and Agricultural Sciences and the Faculty of Economic and Management Sciences. The Department also presents several service statistical modules and courses in many departments and faculties of the University of Pretoria.  Over the years, the Department of Statistics at the University has become a leading statistics department in learning and teaching in South Africa. It also pursues a research-intensive profile with expertise in a number of fields; including statistical theory and methodology, time series analysis, statistical data science, computational statistics and model-based clustering, and biostatistical methodology and application. We are looking to recruit a suitably qualified individual who will enhance and complement our vibrant and robust teaching and learning as well as our research portfolios

    The Department of Statistical has adopted several teaching and learning strategies using online and hybrid modes in addition to the traditional teaching modes.  We have enhanced our teaching programs to incorporate the very growing data science components. The department offers core modules, and it is expected from the incumbent to teach advanced-level statistical modules offered by the department. Thus, we are looking for an incumbent who will have an academic mandate including teaching at undergraduate and postgraduate levels and supervising postgraduate students. The research mandate also requires an active research program, producing accredited academic research outputs, and conference presentations. It will also be expected from the incumbent to build a strong internationally acclaimed research program.

    RESPONSIBILITIES:

    • The incumbent will be responsible for:
    • Teaching undergraduate and postgraduate courses;
    • Mentoring and supervising postgraduate students;
    • Actively conducting independent and collaborative research and publishing research outputs in accredited journals;
    • Developing and/or expanding collaboration with academics internationally;
    • Initiating and delivering specialist courses at national and international levels;
    • Actively participating in administrative duties within the Department.

    MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
    Lecturer:

    • A Master’s degree in Statistics that includes a credit-bearing research dissertation and credit-bearing coursework consisting of core components that align with the required responsibilities of the incumbent;
    • An indication of an emerging research career with evidence of accredited publications in core components of the discipline contributing to the literature and scientific field of statistics; at least one recent publication in statistics in an accredited peer viewed journal;
    • Enrolled for a PhD degree in Statistics with proof of significant progress with the study;
    • Evidence of papers presented at national conferences;
    • Proven competency and experience are required in:
    • Teaching statistics modules and courses at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels as a lecturer;
    • Advanced knowledge of at least one major statistical software programming language;
    • Implementation of efficient teaching models that would be applicable in the university setting.

    Senior Lecturer (same as for Lecturer, PLUS):

    • A Doctoral degree in Statistics;
    • Proven record of curriculum development at the undergraduate and postgraduate level or other specialized professional courses;
    • Evidence of papers presented at national and international conferences;
    • Proven research publications in accredited journals, of which at least two in the mainstream statistical journals;
    • Proven practice of advanced fundamental and applied statistical methodology;
    • Proven record of supervision of postgraduate statistical students;
    • Evidence of supporting and participating in academic citizenship.

    BACKGROUND:

    • The post is for appointment in the field of Mathematics of Finance, compatible with the Research profile of the Department of Mathematics and Applied Mathematics.

    RESPONSIBILITIES:

    The incumbent will be responsible for:

    • Lecturing at undergraduate and postgraduate level on the Hatfield, Groenkloof and/or Mamelodi Campuses including but not limited to modules related to Mathematics of Finance and Financial Engineering:
    • Conducting research in Mathematics of Finance that leads to publication in reputable peer-reviewed journals;

    MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

    Lecturer:

    • An MSc degree, or equivalent, in any field of the Mathematical Sciences with content related to Mathematics of Finance, which provides adequate expertise for teaching undergraduate and Honours modules in Mathematics of Finance and Financial Engineering (The undergraduate and Honours transcripts will be reviewed);
    • The MSc degree should provide a pathway for admission to PhD studies (If the incumbent does not have a PhD, they are expected to make and agree with the Head of Department on a development plan leading to earning a PhD within the first 5 years of employment. Registration for PhD and appropriate progress in the PhD research should be demonstrated in the first two years of the appointment);
    • Evidence of potential to conduct research in the general field of Mathematics of Finance;
    • Some teaching experience in a tertiary environment.

    Senior Lecturer:

    • A PhD degree, or equivalent, in any field of the Mathematical Sciences with content related to Mathematics of Finance, which provides adequate expertise for teaching undergraduate and postgraduate modules as well as supervise postgraduate students in Mathematics of Finance and Financial Engineering (The transcripts of all degrees will be reviewed);
    • Some teaching experience at undergraduate and/or postgraduate levels;
    • Potential to be established as an independent researcher in the near future based on a recent body of work.

    Education Consultant - Department for Education Innovation

    RESPONSIBILITIES:

    The Education Consultant will be required to work on, and contribute to Education Innovation initiatives as well as in the designated Faculty with regards to:

    • Providing strategic leadership and change management for curriculum, teaching, learning and assessment to advance teaching and learning in the faculty;
    • Collaborating with staff in Education Innovation and in the designated Faculty to create, implement, monitor and evaluate curriculum, teaching, assessment and learning platforms, systems and policies for the University as they affect hybrid teaching and learning, particularly in contact environments;
    • Engaging directly and build relationships with Faculties, Schools, Departments, Teaching and Learning Committees and individual academics;
    • Providing initial and continuing professional development for curriculum development, teaching and assessment as well as tutoring;
    • Conducting research as individual, a community of practice or in collaboration with academics in order to stay abreast of trends in all aspects of academic development, as well as contribute to development of knowledge in the field through the scholarship of teaching and learning; and
    • Providing support to the Faculty of Economic and Management Sciences by promoting a culture of continuous change, improvement and innovation.

    MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

    • Relevant Masters degree
    • Preference will be given to qualifying candidates with Post graduate studies in higher education
    • 5 years higher education or training related experience
    • 3 years engagement in institutional initiatives for the academic development of students and lecturers  
    • Expertise in blended and on-line learning
    • Experience in using the affordances of technology to promote teaching and learning
    • Proven experience in the development and application of innovative teaching and learning strategies
    • Experience in working with a Learning Management System
