    Technical Manager

    Job Description

    Sylvania is looking for a Technical Manager to assist with optimising process efficiencies on existing plants, for implementing production reporting and metal accounting best practices and systems, for design input and approval on behalf of the client to feasibility studies and engineering phases of new plant construction projects, to provide support for implementing new technology identified through R&D (output of R&D projects managed by R&D Manager) and providing technical process support to the operations.

    Key Responsibilities:

    • Optimise and align plant operating and control philosophy;
    • Audit of current operating and control philosophy against policy; gap analysis; guidelines to plants for aligning with requirements;
    • Initial and periodic audits of metal accounting systems;
    • Optimise the use of reagents and grinding media;
    • Management of process test work aimed at trouble shooting process inefficiencies;
    • Support of R&D project test work and design integration for projects aimed at improving concentrator efficiencies;
    • Monitor and benchmark economic drivers for plant performance;
    • Identification of opportunities to improve process stability;
    • Participate in process optimisation projects; approve and sign off design changes for implementing brown fields process changes aimed at optimising process efficiencies;
    • Implement production reporting system and data trend analysis tools required for
    • identification, trouble shooting and optimising process inefficiencies;
    • Respond to data supporting process changes to initiate improvement process;
    • Benchmarking of plant performance through data analysis;
    • Collaborate with Group Engineering Manager to Optimise plant availability;
    • Assist with evaluation of plant asset performance and motivations for replacement / improvement of production assets;
    • Assist Group Engineering Manager with roll-out of systems to measure plant availability;
    • Reviews and approves process design and specifications for improvement projects and new projects as part of existing metals portfolio;
    • Provides input to process design for new metals portfolio;
    • Providing technical support to processing operations;
    • Co-ordination of process test work and studies aimed at motivating business improvement projects for existing operations;
    • Manage and direct output of Senior Metallurgists;
    • Technical and process input to design of projects aimed at improving plant efficiencies and concentrate quality.

    Knowledge / Education Requirement:

    • B.Sc. (or B.Eng) Chemical Engineering, or chemistry degree Project Management or related qualification would be advantageous;
    • 5 to 7 years post qualification experience in mineral extraction processes,
    • 3 years relevant experience in comminution and flotation.
    • Diverse experience in metallurgy and recovery of metalliferous minerals would be beneficial
    • Excellent written and verbal communication skills;
    • Computer literacy, excellent Excel, database and presentation skills;
    • Must have a valid code 8 driver’s license and be willing to travel frequently;
    • Must be in possession of a valid certificate of fitness;
