    Data Visualisation Lead: TB Technical Support Unit (TB TSU)

    ROLE DESCRIPTION

    The Tuberculosis Technical Support Unit (TB TSU) is a three-year Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation-funded opportunity, aimed at augmenting the capacity within National Department of Health (NDoH) by embedding technical human resources to help fast-track the effective implementation of the TB Recovery Plan (2022/23) and to ensure the effective transition to the new National TB Programme Strategic Plan 2023-2028.

    As the TB TSU Data Visualisation Lead, you will be at the forefront of transforming complex TB data into actionable insights, driving the effectiveness of the National TB Programme. Your expertise in data collection, analysis, visualization, reporting, and collaboration will empower TB teams to make data-driven decisions and create a lasting impact on TB control and management.

    Your role will encompass: 

    • The Data Visualisation Lead is responsible for developing and managing TB dashboards, supporting provinces and districts to monitor the TB programme’s performance against set objectives. The Data Visualisation Lead will report directly to the TB TSU Director, and liaise with the Director for Research, Information,Monitoring and Evaluation Systems (RINES) within the TB Cluster for day-to-day duties.

    Data Collection & Processing:

    You will play a pivotal role in streamlining TB Programme routine data capture, flow and quality processes. Your responsibilities include:

    • Data Integration: Develop strategies to integrate data from multiple sources, such as DHIS, Tier.net, and EDRWeb, to create a comprehensive dataset that is easily accessible and usable. This will involve designing and managing databases, ensuring data integrity, and performing regular data quality checks.
    • Data Transformation: Transform raw data into meaningful formats that can be easily analyzed and visualized. This includes cleaning and pre-processing data, addressing any inconsistencies, and ensuring that the data is in a format suitable for analysis.
    • Automation of Data Processes: Implement automated data flow processes to minimize manual interventions, reduce errors, and improve efficiency. Utilize tools and technologies that facilitate seamless data capture and integration

    Analytical Support:

    Your role will involve providing strategic, data-driven insights using both conceptual problem-solving and quantitative approaches. You will support the TB programme officials in making informed decisions by:

    • Data Analysis: Conduct in-depth analyses of TB data to identify trends, patterns, and insights that can inform programme strategies. Utilize statistical and analytical tools to interpret complex data and provide actionable recommendations.
    • Visualization Development: Develop compelling graphics, charts, and multimedia visuals to present data in an easily understandable format. Create interactive dashboards that allow TB programme officials to explore data and derive insights independently.
    • Strategic Insights: Provide strategic insights by interpreting data within the context of TB programme goals. Use data to identify areas of improvement, assess the impact of interventions, and support the development of evidence-based strategies

    Report Writing:

    Effective communication of data findings is critical to the success of the TB programme. As the Data Visualisation Lead, you will be responsible for:

    • Comprehensive Reporting: Write reports that present data findings in a clear, concise, and actionable manner. Ensure that reports are tailored to the needs of different stakeholders, including TB programme officials, policymakers, and funders.
    • Data Storytelling: Use data storytelling techniques to convey the significance of data findings. Create narratives that highlight key insights, trends, and recommendations, making complex data accessible and engaging for non-technical audiences.
    • Documentation: Maintain thorough documentation of data analysis processes, methodologies, and findings. Ensure that all reports and visualizations are well-documented and can be easily referenced for future use.
    • Presentation: Present data findings to various stakeholders through written reports, presentations, and interactive sessions. Clearly communicate the implications of data insights and provide recommendations for action.

    Research Collaboration:

    Collaboration with research teams and external partners is essential to ensure that evidence informs TB programme interventions. In this role, you will:

    • Collaborative Research: Work closely with research teams to design and implement studies that address key questions related to the TB programme. Provide data support for research initiatives, including data sharing and interpretation.
    • Best Practices: Stay updated with the latest developments in data visualization, data analysis, and TB research. Implement best practices in data management and visualization to ensure that the TB programme remains at the forefront of data-driven decision-making.
    • Capacity Building: Train and mentor TB programme officials and other stakeholders on data visualization tools and techniques. Build capacity within the team to use data effectively and independently, fostering a culture of data-driven decision-making

    Project Performance Monitoring:

    Monitoring and evaluating the performance of the TB TSU grant is a crucial aspect of your role. You will:

    • Performance Metrics: Develop and monitor performance metrics to assess the effectiveness of data visualization and analysis efforts on the TSU grant. Track progress against set objectives and identify areas for improvement.
    • Impact Assessment: Conduct regular impact assessments to evaluate the effectiveness of data-driven interventions. Use data to measure the outcomes of the TB programme and provide evidence of success to stakeholders and the funder.

    • The expected responsibilities of the TB TSU Data Visualisation Lead will include:
    • Streamlining routine data capture and flow processes
    • Making large and/or complex data more accessible, understandable and usable
    • Transforming, improving and integrating data, depending on the programme requirements
    • Combining TB data across multiple sources such as DHIS, Tier.net and EDRWeb
    • Developing compelling graphics, charts and multimedia visuals and managing TB dashboards to enhance data use by TB programme officials at all levels
    • Providing strategic, data-driven insights using both conceptual problem-solving and quantitative approaches
    • Identifying and overcoming problems that emerge during data analysis
    • Monitoring the project’s performance against set objectives

    You are likely to have:

    • Minimum requirement: Bachelor’s Degree in Data Science, Statistics, Computer Science, Public Health, or a related field
    • Master’s Degree in Data Science, Public Health, Epidemiology, Statistics, or a related field would be an advantage
    • Completion of an M&E course desired
    • Minimum of 3 years’ professional experience in data visualization
    • Previous experience in TB or public health programme M&E desired
    • Excellent visual skills, including demonstrable design knowledge, such as layout, typography, colour, interaction and design.
    • Fluency with data visualisation tools such as PowerBI or Tableau
    • Demonstrable capability to draw on data from multiple sources before analysing, synthesising and presenting the results/findings in a way to that supports data use
    • Capacity to work in a multi-disciplinary team, including coordinating technical input into a framework.
    • Ability to work rapidly, both in person and remotely, with team members in various locations.
    • A good understanding of the South African health system
