    Chief Data Officer

    Requirements

    Experience

    • 12 - 15 years experience in a Senior Information Technology or Senior Data & Analytics Solution role
    • 10 years experience leading senior managers and overseeing a function
    • Experience in Big Data, Data Strategy or Analytics
    • Experience in Data Management practices (i.e.,governance, strategy, architecture, quality, operations, Business Intelligence, risk management, etc.)
    • Experience developing and managing business cases, programme implementation and change initiatives
    • Hands on experience developing and maintaining key partnership with internal and external stakeholders at a senior level

    Qualifications

    • Master of Business Administration (MBA) (Desirable)
    • Masters degree in Information Technology/ Data Science/ Computer Science/Statistics and or relevant equivalent qualification (Desirable)
    • Honours degree in Information Technology/ Data Science/ Computer Science/Statistics and or relevant equivalent qualification (Essential)
    • Degree in Information Technology/ Data Science/ Computer Science/Statistics and or relevant equivalent qualification (Essential)
    • Matric (grade 12) Certificate (Essential)

    Knowledge 

    • BI application designs, architectures and data visualisations 
    • Advanced statistical modelling, advanced excel, SQL, SAS and Tableau 
    • Data Management Strategy and framework formulation 
    • Strong knowledge of various database architectures and methodologies 
    • Strong knowledge of various AI/ML frameworks, tools, and programming language 
    • Deep understanding of the ethical considerations and implications of AI/ML technologies 
    • Budgeting and financial management 
    • Agile development practices and methodologies 
    • Data-related technologies and tools (e.g., data lakes, data warehouses, data visualisation, machine learning) 
    • Familiarity with data privacy regulations (e.g., GDPR, POPIA, AML) 
    • Knowledge of emerging trends and best practices in data and analytics 

    Duties & Responsibilities

    Process

    • Oversee the data governance function including the data architectural functions and the establishment of a control framework over the design and security decisions that govern the implementation of the data environment.
    • Build predictive data analytical capability through ensuring that the business invests in solutions which will establish appropriate databases.
    • Develop custom reporting and analysis using business intelligence and data visualisation tool to support decision making.
    • Partner with cross functional data analytics teams across the business to encourage exchange of information, learnings, and set a clear way of data analytics and operations.
    • Drive the development of business intelligence solutions which provide actionable insights to various business units, enabling informed decision-making.
    • Manage data-related risks and compliance with relevant regulations, ensuring data privacy and security.
    • Collaborate with business leaders, technology teams, and external partners to identify opportunities for data-driven innovation and support cross-functional initiatives.
    • Oversee the development of data products (e.g. Data Marts) to ensure data has the quality, integrity and usability needed by users.
    • Partner with other Data Science & Analytics leaders across the group to ensure the most competitive talent proposition, providing opportunities for high performers to gain experience working in different business units.
    • Lead the development and deployment of advanced analytics, machine learning, and artificial intelligence solutions to extract valuable insights, improve risk management, and enhance customer engagement.
    • Evaluate the return on investment of data management solutions and drive the enhancement of data management & analytical solutions to maximise operational business processes.
    • Create a data management system which will facilitate the secure collection and processing of data across the Group.
    • Establish a framework which will outline the best practice for data management and data governance for the organisation.
    • Oversee the data sourcing, management, governance, models and mining activities to support descriptive and trend analysis.
    • Drive the improvement and quality of data management systems by implementing initiatives that optimise performance, staff productivity and service delivery.
    • Establish and drive standards and procedures for solutions definition, development, testing, change management and operational controls.
    • Keep up to breast with data and analytical best practice and trends emerging in the market and determine solutions which will enable the business to evolve to the changes in the market.
    • Develop data security policies and procedures which will guide the business to ensure data integrity, security and compliance.
    • Be a member of and make positive contributions to Professional Bodies and Stakeholder Groups which will benefit the success of the business.

    • Implement and compile budgets to minimise expenditure in alignment with tactical delivery plans. 
    • Implement data-driven solutions to optimise operational processes, reduce costs, and improve resource allocation. 
    • Control the budget for area, including the authorisation of expenditures and implementation of financial regulations. 
    • Leverage data and analytics to identify and mitigate risks, enhancing the organisation's resilience and compliance with regulatory requirements. 
    • Manage high risk and problematic financial issues in area of accountability and contribute to the development of policy. 
    • Implement and manage financial risk methodologies, techniques and systems and use to monitor and report on financial activities. 
    • Implement and provide feedback on the effectiveness of financial policy, practice and procedures: preventing illegal, unethical or improper conduct. 
    • Implement risk management, governance and compliance policies in own practice area, to identify and manage governance and risk exposure liability. 
    • Investigate reported wilful acts of non-compliance to organisation policy and practice and report on findings.
